1. And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,
2. Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.
3. Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,
4. And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.
5. But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
6. Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
7. There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
8. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
9. For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
10. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
11. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
12. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
13. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
14. Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,
15. And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.
16. And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.
17. Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
18. And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.
19. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
20. Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.
21. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.
22. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
23. And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
24. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.
25. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
26. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28. For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
30. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
31. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
32. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
33. Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
34. Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
35. Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
36. Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
37. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
38. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
39. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
40. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?
41. Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
43. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.
44. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.
45. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
47. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
49. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
50. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
51. And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
53. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
54. But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
55. In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
56. But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
57. And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
58. But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
59. Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
60. But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,
61. And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
62. And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
63. But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
64. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
65. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
66. What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
67. Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
68. Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
69. Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.
70. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
71. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
72. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
73. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.
74. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
75. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.
1. Lorsque Jésus eut fini de donner toutes ces instructions, il dit à ses disciples:
2. «Vous savez que la Pâque a lieu dans deux jours et que le Fils de l'homme sera arrêté pour être crucifié.»
3. Alors les chefs des prêtres, [les spécialistes de la loi] et les anciens du peuple se réunirent dans la cour du grand-prêtre, appelé Caïphe,
4. et ils décidèrent d'arrêter Jésus par ruse et de le faire mourir.
5. Cependant, ils se dirent: «Que ce ne soit pas pendant la fête, afin qu'il n'y ait pas d'agitation parmi le peuple.»
6. Comme Jésus était à Béthanie, dans la maison de Simon le lépreux,
7. une femme s'approcha de lui avec un vase qui contenait un parfum de grande valeur. Pendant qu'il était à table, elle versa le parfum sur sa tête.
8. A cette vue, les disciples s'indignèrent et dirent: «A quoi bon un tel gaspillage?
9. On aurait pu vendre ce parfum très cher et donner l'argent aux pauvres.»
10. Le sachant, Jésus leur dit: «Pourquoi faites-vous de la peine à cette femme? Elle a accompli une bonne action envers moi.
11. En effet, vous avez toujours des pauvres avec vous, mais vous ne m'aurez pas toujours.
12. En versant ce parfum sur mon corps, elle l'a fait pour mon ensevelissement.
13. Je vous le dis en vérité, partout où cette bonne nouvelle sera proclamée, dans le monde entier, on racontera aussi en souvenir de cette femme ce qu'elle a fait.»
14. Alors l'un des douze, appelé Judas l'Iscariot, alla vers les chefs des prêtres
15. et dit: «Que voulez-vous me donner pour que je vous livre Jésus?» Ils lui payèrent 30 pièces d'argent.
16. Dès ce moment, il se mit à chercher une occasion favorable pour trahir Jésus.
17. Le premier jour des pains sans levain, les disciples s'adressèrent à Jésus pour lui dire: «Où veux-tu que nous te préparions le repas de la Pâque?»
18. Il répondit: «Allez à la ville chez un tel et vous lui direz: 'Le maître dit: Mon heure est proche. Je célébrerai la Pâque chez toi avec mes disciples.'»
19. Les disciples firent ce que Jésus leur avait ordonné et préparèrent la Pâque.
20. Le soir venu, il se mit à table avec les douze.
21. Pendant qu'ils mangeaient, il dit: «Je vous le dis en vérité, l'un de vous me trahira.»
22. Ils furent profondément attristés et chacun se mit à lui dire: «Est-ce moi, Seigneur?»
23. Il répondit: «Celui qui a mis la main dans le plat avec moi, c'est celui qui me trahira.
24. Le Fils de l'homme s'en va, conformément à ce qui est écrit à son sujet, mais malheur à l'homme par qui le Fils de l'homme est trahi! Mieux vaudrait pour cet homme qu'il ne soit pas né.»
25. Judas, celui qui le trahissait, prit la parole et dit: «Est-ce moi, maître?» Jésus lui répondit: «Tu le dis.»
26. Pendant qu'ils mangeaient, Jésus prit du pain et prononça la prière de bénédiction, puis il le rompit et le donna aux disciples en disant: «Prenez, mangez, ceci est mon corps.»
27. Il prit ensuite une coupe et remercia Dieu, puis il la leur donna en disant: «Buvez-en tous,
28. car ceci est mon sang, le sang de la [nouvelle] alliance, qui est versé pour beaucoup, pour le pardon des péchés.
29. Je vous le dis, je ne boirai plus désormais de ce fruit de la vigne, jusqu'au jour où je le boirai nouveau avec vous dans le royaume de mon Père.»
30. Après avoir chanté les psaumes, ils se rendirent au mont des Oliviers.
31. Alors Jésus leur dit: «Vous trébucherez tous, cette nuit, à cause de moi, car il est écrit: Je frapperai le berger et les brebis du troupeau seront dispersées.
32. Mais, après ma résurrection, je vous précéderai en Galilée.»
33. Pierre prit la parole et lui dit: «Même si tous trébuchent à cause de toi, ce ne sera jamais mon cas.»
34. Jésus lui dit: «Je te le dis en vérité, cette nuit même, avant que le coq chante, trois fois tu me renieras.»
35. Pierre lui répondit: «Même s'il me faut mourir avec toi, je ne te renierai pas.» Et tous les disciples dirent la même chose.
36. Là-dessus, Jésus se rendit avec eux dans un endroit appelé Gethsémané et il dit aux disciples: «Asseyez-vous [ici] pendant que je m'éloignerai pour prier.»
37. Il prit avec lui Pierre et les deux fils de Zébédée et il commença à être saisi de tristesse et d'angoisse.
38. Il leur dit alors: «Mon âme est triste à en mourir. Restez ici, éveillés avec moi.»
39. Puis il avança de quelques pas, se jeta le visage contre terre et fit cette prière: «Mon Père, si cela est possible, que cette coupe s'éloigne de moi! Toutefois, non pas ce que je veux, mais ce que tu veux.»
40. Il revint vers les disciples, qu'il trouva endormis, et dit à Pierre: «Vous n'avez donc pas pu rester éveillés une seule heure avec moi!
41. Restez vigilants et priez pour ne pas céder à la tentation. L'esprit est bien disposé, mais par nature l'homme est faible.»
42. Il s'éloigna une deuxième fois et fit cette prière: «Mon Père, s'il n'est pas possible que cette coupe s'éloigne [de moi] sans que je la boive, que ta volonté soit faite!»
43. Il revint et les trouva encore endormis, car ils avaient les paupières lourdes.
44. Il les quitta, s'éloigna de nouveau et pria pour la troisième fois, répétant les mêmes paroles.
45. Puis il revint vers ses disciples et leur dit: «Vous dormez maintenant et vous vous reposez! Voici, l'heure est proche et le Fils de l'homme est livré entre les mains des pécheurs.
46. Levez-vous, allons-y! Celui qui me trahit s'approche.»
47. Il parlait encore quand Judas, l'un des douze, arriva avec une foule nombreuse armée d'épées et de bâtons, envoyée par les chefs des prêtres et par les anciens du peuple.
48. Celui qui le trahissait leur avait donné ce signe: «L'homme auquel je donnerai un baiser, c'est lui. Arrêtez-le!»
49. Aussitôt, il s'approcha de Jésus en disant: «Salut, maître!», et il l'embrassa.
50. Jésus lui dit: «Mon ami, ce que tu es venu faire, fais-le.» Alors ces gens s'avancèrent, mirent la main sur Jésus et l'arrêtèrent.
51. Un de ceux qui étaient avec Jésus mit la main sur son épée et la tira; il frappa le serviteur du grand-prêtre et lui emporta l'oreille.
52. Alors Jésus lui dit: «Remets ton épée à sa place, car tous ceux qui prendront l'épée mourront par l'épée.
53. Penses-tu que je ne puisse pas faire appel à mon Père, qui me donnerait à l'instant plus de douze légions d'anges?
54. Comment donc s'accompliraient les Ecritures, d'après lesquelles cela doit se passer ainsi?»
55. A ce moment, Jésus dit à la foule: «Vous êtes venus vous emparer de moi avec des épées et des bâtons, comme pour un brigand. J'étais tous les jours assis [parmi vous], enseignant dans le temple, et vous ne m'avez pas arrêté.
56. Mais tout cela est arrivé afin que les écrits des prophètes soient accomplis.»Alors tous les disciples l'abandonnèrent et prirent la fuite.
57. Ceux qui avaient arrêté Jésus l'emmenèrent chez le grand-prêtre Caïphe, où les spécialistes de la loi et les anciens étaient rassemblés.
58. Pierre le suivit de loin jusqu'à la cour du grand-prêtre, y entra et s'assit avec les serviteurs pour voir comment cela finirait.
59. Les chefs des prêtres, [les anciens] et tout le sanhédrin cherchaient un faux témoignage contre Jésus afin de le faire mourir,
60. mais ils n'en trouvèrent pas, quoique beaucoup de faux témoins se soient présentés. Enfin, il en vint deux qui dirent:
61. «Celui-ci a dit: 'Je peux détruire le temple de Dieu et le reconstruire en trois jours.'»
62. Le grand-prêtre se leva et lui dit: «Ne réponds-tu rien? Pourquoi ces hommes témoignent-ils contre toi?»
63. Mais Jésus gardait le silence. Le grand-prêtre [prit la parole et] lui dit: «Je t'adjure, par le Dieu vivant, de nous dire si tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu.»
64. Jésus lui répondit: «Tu le dis. De plus, je vous le déclare, vous verrez désormais le Fils de l'homme assis à la droite du Tout-Puissant et venant sur les nuées du ciel.»
65. Alors le grand-prêtre déchira ses vêtements en disant: «Il a blasphémé! Qu'avons-nous encore besoin de témoins? Vous venez d'entendre son blasphème.
66. Qu'en pensez-vous?» Ils répondirent: «Il mérite la mort.»
67. Là-dessus, ils lui crachèrent au visage et le frappèrent à coups de poing; certains lui donnaient des gifles en disant:
68. «Christ, prophétise-nous qui t'a frappé!»
69. Or Pierre était assis dehors dans la cour. Une servante s'approcha de lui et dit: «Toi aussi, tu étais avec Jésus le Galiléen.»
70. Mais il le nia devant tous en disant: «Je ne sais pas ce que tu veux dire.»
71. Comme il se dirigeait vers la porte, une autre servante le vit et dit à ceux qui se trouvaient là: «Cet homme [aussi] était avec Jésus de Nazareth.»
72. Il le nia de nouveau, avec serment: «Je ne connais pas cet homme.»
73. Peu après, ceux qui étaient là s'approchèrent et dirent à Pierre: «Certainement, toi aussi tu fais partie de ces gens-là, car ton langage te fait reconnaître.»
74. Alors il se mit à jurer en lançant des malédictions: «Je ne connais pas cet homme.» Aussitôt un coq chanta.
75. Pierre se souvint alors de ce que Jésus [lui] avait dit: «Avant que le coq chante, tu me renieras trois fois.» Il sortit et pleura amèrement.
