1. There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2. And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3. His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4. And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5. And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
6. Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9. Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10. Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
13. And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
14. And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15. And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18. While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
19. And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20. Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21. And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
22. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
1. Il y avait dans le pays d'Uts un homme qui s'appelait Job. Cet homme était intègre et droit. Il craignait Dieu et se détournait du mal.
2. Il avait 7 fils et 3 filles.
3. Il possédait 7000 brebis, 3000 chameaux, 500 paires de boeufs et 500 ânesses. Il avait aussi un très grand nombre de serviteurs. Cet homme était le plus important de tous les nomades de l'est.
4. Les fils de Job se rendaient visite les uns aux autres et organisaient, chacun à tour de rôle, un festin. Ils invitaient leurs trois soeurs à manger et boire avec eux.
5. Quand les jours de festin étaient passés, Job faisait venir ses fils pour les purifier: il se levait de bon matin et offrait un holocauste pour chacun d'eux. En effet, il se disait: «Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché, peut-être ont-ils offensé Dieu dans leur coeur.» Voilà ce que faisait toujours Job.
6. Un jour, les fils de Dieu vinrent se présenter devant l'Eternel, et Satan vint aussi au milieu d'eux.
7. L'Eternel dit à Satan: «D'où viens-tu?» Satan répondit à l'Eternel: «De parcourir la terre et de m'y promener.»
8. L'Eternel dit à Satan: «As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'y a personne comme lui sur la terre. C'est un homme intègre et droit. Il craint Dieu et se détourne du mal.»
9. Satan répondit à l'Eternel: «Est-ce de façon désintéressée que Job craint Dieu?
10. Ne l'as-tu pas entouré de ta protection, lui, sa famille et tout ce qui lui appartient? Tu as béni le travail de ses mains et ses troupeaux couvrent le pays.
11. Mais porte donc la main contre lui, touche à tout ce qui lui appartient, et je suis sûr qu'il te maudira en face.»
12. L'Eternel dit à Satan: «Voici tout ce qui lui appartient: je te le livre. Seulement, ne porte pas la main sur lui.» Satan se retira alors de la présence de l'Eternel.
13. Alors qu'un jour les fils et les filles de Job mangeaient et buvaient du vin chez leur frère aîné,
14. un messager arriva vers Job et lui dit: «Les boeufs labouraient et les ânesses broutaient à côté d'eux.
15. Des Sabéens se sont jetés sur eux et les ont enlevés. Ils ont tué les serviteurs à coups d'épée et je suis le seul à avoir pu m'échapper pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.»
16. Il parlait encore lorsqu'un autre messager arriva et dit: «La foudre est tombée du ciel, a embrasé les brebis et les serviteurs et les a dévorés. Je suis le seul à avoir pu m'échapper pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.»
17. Il parlait encore lorsqu'un autre messager arriva et dit: «Des Chaldéens répartis en trois bandes se sont précipités sur les chameaux et les ont enlevés. Ils ont tué les serviteurs à coups d'épée et je suis le seul à avoir pu m'échapper pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.»
18. Il parlait encore lorsqu'un autre messager arriva et dit: «Pendant que tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin chez leur frère aîné,
19. un grand vent est venu depuis l'autre côté du désert et a frappé contre les quatre coins de la maison. Elle s'est écroulée sur les jeunes gens et ils sont morts. Je suis le seul à avoir pu m'échapper pour t'en apporter la nouvelle.»
20. Job se leva alors, déchira son manteau et se rasa la tête. Puis il se jeta par terre, se prosterna
21. et dit: «C'est nu que je suis sorti du ventre de ma mère, et c'est nu que je repartirai. L'Eternel a donné et l'Eternel a repris. Que le nom de l'Eternel soit béni!»
22. Dans tout cela, Job ne pécha pas, il n'attribua rien d'inapproprié à Dieu.
