Exploring the Old Testament: A Journey through the old testament

At Eglise Renens AB, we have a dynamic student Bible group that meets every 2 weeks (contact us for details contact@ab-renens.ch) to dive deeper into the stories of faith, courage, and resilience that make up the Old Testament. This group provides a welcoming and encouraging space for young people to explore the lives of Old Testament figures, drawing lessons that still resonate with us today.

Each session, the group focuses on a different Old Testament figure, like Abraham, Moses, Ruth, and David but including some of the lesser known people. We start by reading their stories, then discussing how these lives illustrate God’s guidance, promises, and faithfulness, even in the face of doubt or adversity. The students are encouraged to ask questions, share their thoughts, and see how these ancient stories relate to their lives now. Each session wraps up with a discussion on how we, too, can live out our faith in our daily lives—learning from the trust and obedience displayed by these Old Testament heroes.

This group has become a place of spiritual growth and fellowship, as students learn not only from the lives of people in the Bible but also from each other. As one student shared, “It’s inspiring to see how God worked through ordinary people, just like us. Their faith wasn’t always perfect, but God used them in amazing ways.”

Our study time often includes group prayers and moments of quiet reflection, helping students build a deeper connection with God and with each other. We believe that in today’s complex world, it’s vital for young people to have this foundation in the Word—strengthening them to face challenges with faith, wisdom, and courage.

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” — Romans 15:4

Bible Studies / Home Groups

Home Groups meet once a week with the goal of maturing in faith through Bible study. The groups are formed according to people involved and their geographical locations.

Normally, the groups meet either at the church or are invited to the homes of members currently primarily in the Prilly area but also in Préverenge, and Cossonay. These groups are a perfect opportunity for getting to know each other better and exchanging thoughts and questions about the Bible. It is a great way to get to know the people of the church better. The theme for the last 2 years has been quite general “questions and answers”. Where Bible topics have been proposed by people in the group around specific questions they would like to discuss.

Gentle and Lowly, Dane Ortland

In 2023 we studies the book “Gentle and Lowly”, by Dane Ortland. Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take us into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.
