1. The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2. To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3. To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4. To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
6. To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
9. For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10. My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
11. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
12. Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
13. We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14. Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
15. My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
16. For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
17. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
19. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20. Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21. She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
22. How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23. Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25. But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26. I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27. When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29. For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30. They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
1. Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d'Israël,
2. pour connaître la sagesse et l'instruction, pour comprendre les paroles de l'intelligence,
3. pour recevoir des leçons de bon sens, de justice, d'équité et de droiture,
4. pour donner du discernement à ceux qui manquent d'expérience, de la connaissance et de la réflexion aux jeunes.
5. Que le sage écoute, et il augmentera son savoir! Celui qui est intelligent gagnera en habileté
6. pour comprendre les proverbes et les paraboles, les paroles des sages et leurs énigmes.
7. La connaissance commence par la crainte de l'Eternel. Il faut être fou pour mépriser la sagesse et l'instruction.
8. Mon fils, écoute l'instruction de ton père et ne rejette pas l'enseignement de ta mère!
9. En effet, ce sera une couronne de grâce pour ta tête et un collier pour ton cou.
10. Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent t'entraîner, ne cède pas!
11. Peut-être te diront-ils: «Viens avec nous! Dressons des embuscades pour verser du sang, tendons sans raison un piège aux innocents!
12. Engloutissons-les vivants, comme le séjour des morts! Oui, engloutissons-les tout entiers comme ceux qui descendent dans la tombe!
13. Nous trouverons toutes sortes de biens précieux et nous remplirons nos maisons de butin.
14. Tu auras ta part avec nous, il n'y aura qu'une bourse pour nous tous!»
15. Mon fils, ne te mets pas en chemin avec eux, écarte ton pied de leur sentier!
16. En effet, leurs pieds courent au mal et ils sont pressés de verser le sang.
17. Or, il ne sert à rien de poser un piège sous les yeux de tout ce qui peut voler.
18. Eux, c'est contre leur propre vie qu'ils dressent des embuscades, c'est à eux-mêmes qu'ils tendent un piège.
19. Tel est le sentier de tout homme assoiffé de profit: le gain malhonnête cause la perte de son propriétaire.
20. La sagesse crie dans les rues, elle parle tout haut sur les places,
21. elle appelle à l'entrée des endroits bruyants. Aux portes, dans la ville, elle fait entendre ses paroles:
22. «Jusqu'à quand, vous qui manquez d'expérience, aimerez-vous la naïveté? Jusqu'à quand les moqueurs trouveront-ils leur plaisir dans la moquerie et les hommes stupides détesteront-ils la connaissance?
23. Revenez pour écouter mes reproches! Je veux déverser mon Esprit sur vous, je veux vous faire connaître mes paroles.
24. »Puisque j'appelle et que vous résistez, puisque je tends la main et que personne n'y prête attention,
25. puisque vous négligez tous mes conseils et n'acceptez pas mes reproches,
26. moi aussi je rirai quand vous serez dans le malheur, je me moquerai quand la terreur fondra sur vous,
27. quand la terreur fondra sur vous comme une tempête et que le malheur vous enveloppera comme un tourbillon, quand la détresse et l'angoisse s'empareront de vous.
28. »Alors ils m'appelleront et je ne répondrai pas, ils me chercheront et ils ne me trouveront pas.
29. Parce qu'ils ont détesté la connaissance et n'ont pas choisi la crainte de l'Eternel,
30. parce qu'ils n'ont pas accepté mes conseils et ont méprisé tous mes reproches,
31. ils se nourriront du fruit de leur conduite et ils se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils.
32. En effet, l'égarement de ceux qui manquent d'expérience les tue et l'insouciance des hommes stupides provoque leur perte.
33. En revanche, celui qui m'écoute habitera en sécurité. Il vivra tranquille et n'aura à redouter aucun mal.»
