1. The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
2. For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
3. Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
4. I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
5. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
6. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
7. For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11. For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
12. Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
13. The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
1. De la part de l'ancien à la dame qui a été choisie et à ses enfants que j'aime dans la vérité. Et ce n'est pas moi seulement qui les aime, mais aussi tous ceux qui ont connu la vérité.
2. Nous vous aimons à cause de la vérité qui demeure en nous et qui sera avec nous pour l'éternité.
3. Oui, la grâce, la compassion et la paix seront avec nous dans la vérité et l'amour. Elles viennent de Dieu le Père et [du Seigneur] Jésus-Christ, le Fils du Père.
4. J'ai éprouvé une très grande joie à rencontrer quelques-uns de tes enfants qui marchent dans la vérité, conformément au commandement que nous avons reçu du Père.
5. Et maintenant, voici ce que je te demande, chère dame: c'est que nous nous aimions les uns les autres. Ce n'est pas un commandement nouveau que je t'écris, mais celui que nous avons reçu dès le commencement.
6. Or l'amour consiste à vivre conformément à ses commandements. Tel est le commandement dans lequel vous devez marcher, comme vous l'avez appris depuis le début.
7. En effet, de nombreux imposteurs sont venus dans le monde; ils ne reconnaissent pas que Jésus est le Messie venu en homme. Voilà ce qui caractérise l'imposteur et l'Antichrist.
8. Faites attention à vous-mêmes. Ainsi nous ne perdrons pas le fruit de notre travail mais recevrons une pleine récompense.
9. Quiconque s'écarte de ce chemin et ne demeure pas dans l'enseignement de Christ n'a pas Dieu; celui qui demeure dans l'enseignement [de Christ] a le Père et le Fils.
10. Si quelqu'un vient chez vous et n'apporte pas cet enseignement, ne le prenez pas chez vous et ne le saluez pas,
11. car celui qui le salue s'associe à ses mauvaises oeuvres.
12. J'ai beaucoup de choses à vous écrire, mais je n'ai pas voulu le faire avec le papier et l'encre. J'espère venir chez vous et vous parler de vive voix afin que notre joie soit complète.
13. Les enfants de ta soeur, choisie elle aussi, te saluent.
