1. When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
2. And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3. Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
4. Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
5. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
6. Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7. For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
8. The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
9. Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
10. Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
11. For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.
12. Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13. Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
14. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
15. My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
16. Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
17. Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
18. For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
19. Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20. Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
21. For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
22. Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23. Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24. The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
25. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
26. My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27. For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
28. She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
29. Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30. They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
34. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
1. Si tu es à table avec un grand, fais attention à ce qui est devant toi!
2. Place un couteau devant ta gorge, si tu as trop d'appétit!
3. Ne convoite pas ses bons plats: c'est une nourriture trompeuse.
4. Ne te fatigue pas à acquérir la richesse, n'y applique pas ton intelligence.
5. Veux-tu la poursuivre du regard? La voilà disparue! En effet, la richesse se fait des ailes et, comme l'aigle, elle prend son envol vers le ciel.
6. Ne mange pas le pain de l'homme au regard malveillant, ne convoite pas ses bons plats,
7. car il calcule au fond de lui: «Mange et bois», te dira-t-il, mais son coeur n'est pas avec toi.
8. Tu vomiras le morceau que tu as mangé et tu auras tenu en pure perte des propos agréables.
9. Ne parle pas aux oreilles de l'homme stupide, car il méprise le bon sens de tes discours.
10. Ne déplace pas la limite ancienne et n'empiète pas sur le champ des orphelins,
11. car *celui qui les rachète est puissant. C'est lui qui défendra leur cause contre toi.
12. Ouvre ton coeur à l'instruction et tes oreilles aux paroles de la connaissance!
13. Ne refuse pas de corriger l'enfant! Si tu le frappes avec un bâton, il ne mourra pas.
14. Certes, tu le frappes avec un bâton, mais tu arraches son âme au séjour des morts.
15. Mon fils, si ton coeur est sage, mon coeur à moi sera dans la joie.
16. Tout mon être sera dans l'allégresse quand tes lèvres parleront avec droiture.
17. Que ton coeur n'envie pas les pécheurs, mais qu'il ait toujours la crainte de l'Eternel,
18. car il y a un avenir et ton espérance ne pourra pas être brisée.
19. Ecoute, mon fils, et montre-toi sage! Dirige ton coeur sur la voie droite!
20. Ne figure pas parmi les buveurs de vin, parmi ceux qui font des excès de viande,
21. car l'ivrogne et celui qui se livre à des excès s'appauvrissent, et la somnolence fait porter des haillons.
22. Ecoute ton père, lui qui t'a donné naissance! Ne méprise pas ta mère quand elle est devenue vieille!
23. Acquiers la vérité et ne la vends pas, la sagesse, l'instruction et l'intelligence.
24. Le père du juste est dans l'allégresse, celui qui donne naissance à un sage en aura de la joie.
25. Que ton père et ta mère se réjouissent, que celle qui t'a mis au monde soit dans l'allégresse!
26. Mon fils, donne-moi ton coeur et que tes yeux prennent plaisir à mes voies!
27. En effet, la prostituée est une fosse profonde, et l'inconnue un puits étroit.
28. Elle se tient en embuscade comme un brigand et elle augmente le nombre d'infidèles parmi les hommes.
29. Pour qui les «ah»? Pour qui les «hélas»? Pour qui les disputes? Pour qui les plaintes? Pour qui les blessures sans raison? Pour qui les yeux rouges?
30. Pour ceux qui s'attardent auprès du vin, pour ceux qui vont déguster du vin mélangé.
31. Ne regarde pas le vin parce qu'il est d'un beau rouge et qu'il fait des perles dans la coupe: il s'avale d'un trait
32. et il finit par mordre comme un serpent, par piquer comme une vipère.
33. Tes yeux auraient alors d'étranges visions et ton coeur exprimerait le dérèglement.
34. Tu serais pareil à un homme couché en pleine mer, à un homme couché au sommet d'un mât:
35. «On m'a frappé et je n'ai pas mal! On m'a battu et je ne sens rien! Quand me réveillerai-je? J'en veux encore!»
