1. O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever? why doth thine anger smoke against the sheep of thy pasture?
2. Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt.
3. Lift up thy feet unto the perpetual desolations; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary.
4. Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregations; they set up their ensigns for signs.
5. A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees.
6. But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers.
7. They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground.
8. They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land.
9. We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.
10. O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?
11. Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand? pluck it out of thy bosom.
12. For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
13. Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.
14. Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
15. Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.
16. The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.
17. Thou hast set all the borders of the earth: thou hast made summer and winter.
18. Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.
19. O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever.
20. Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty.
21. O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise thy name.
22. Arise, O God, plead thine own cause: remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily.
23. Forget not the voice of thine enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually.
1. Cantique d'Asaph. Pourquoi, ô Dieu, nous rejettes-tu définitivement? Pourquoi t'irrites-tu contre le troupeau dont tu es le berger?
2. Souviens-toi de ton peuple que tu as acquis autrefois, que tu as racheté pour en faire une tribu qui t'appartienne! Souviens-toi du mont Sion où tu faisais ta résidence!
3. Porte tes pas vers ces endroits toujours en ruine! L'ennemi a tout dévasté dans le sanctuaire,
4. tes adversaires ont rugi au milieu de ton temple; ils ont établi pour signes leurs signes.
5. On les a vus pareils à ceux qui lèvent la hache dans une épaisse forêt,
6. quand ils ont brisé toutes les sculptures à coups de masses et de marteaux.
7. Ils ont mis le feu à ton sanctuaire, ils ont abattu, profané la demeure de ton nom.
8. Ils disaient dans leur coeur: «Traitons-les tous avec violence!» Ils ont brûlé dans le pays tous les lieux saints.
9. Nous ne voyons plus nos signes, il n'y a plus de prophète, et personne parmi nous qui sache jusqu'à quand
10. Jusqu'à quand, ô Dieu, l'adversaire va-t-il proférer ses insultes, et l'ennemi mépriser sans cesse ton nom?
11. Pourquoi retires-tu ta main, ta main droite? Sors-la! Détruis l'adversaire!
12. Dieu est mon roi depuis les temps anciens, lui qui accomplit des délivrances sur toute la terre.
13. Tu as fendu la mer par ta puissance, tu as brisé les têtes des monstres sur les eaux;
14. tu as écrasé la tête du léviathan, tu l'as donné pour nourriture aux habitants du désert.
15. Tu as fait jaillir des sources et des torrents, tu as mis à sec des fleuves qui n'arrêtaient jamais de couler.
16. A toi appartient le jour, à toi appartient la nuit; tu as établi la lune et le soleil.
17. Tu as fixé toutes les limites de la terre, tu as formé l'été et l'hiver.
18. Souviens-toi que l'ennemi insulte l'Eternel et qu'un peuple rempli de folie méprise ton nom!
19. Ne livre pas aux bêtes la vie de ta tourterelle, n'oublie pas définitivement le sort des malheureux qui t'appartiennent,
20. prête attention à ton alliance, car les endroits retirés du pays sont pleins de repaires de brigands!
21. Que l'opprimé ne fasse pas demi-tour, couvert de honte, que le malheureux et le pauvre célèbrent ton nom!
22. Lève-toi, ô Dieu, défends ta cause, souviens-toi des insultes que le fou t'adresse chaque jour!
23. N'oublie pas les cris de tes adversaires, le tapage sans cesse grandissant de ceux qui s'attaquent à toi!
