1. Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
2. How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
3. Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice?
4. If thy children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression;
5. If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty;
6. If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
7. Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
8. For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers:
9. (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:)
10. Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
11. Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water?
12. Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb.
13. So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish:
14. Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web.
15. He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.
16. He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden.
17. His roots are wrapped about the heap, and seeth the place of stones.
18. If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
19. Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
20. Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:
21. Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing.
22. They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.

2. «Jusqu'à quand veux-tu lancer de telles affirmations? Les paroles qui sortent de ta bouche sont pareilles à un vent impétueux.
3. Dieu fausserait-il le droit? Le Tout-Puissant fausserait-il la justice?
4. Si tes fils ont péché contre lui, il les a livrés aux conséquences de leur révolte.
5. Mais toi, si tu recherches vraiment Dieu, si tu implores la grâce du Tout-Puissant,
6. si tu es sans reproche et droit, c'est certain, il ne tardera pas à intervenir en ta faveur et il restaurera le domaine qui abrite ta justice.
7. Ta condition première semblera peu importante, tant celle qui viendra par la suite sera belle.
8. »Interroge donc les membres de la génération précédente, sois attentif à l'expérience de leurs ancêtres.
9. En effet, nous sommes d'hier et nous ne savons rien, nos jours sur la terre ne sont qu'une ombre.
10. Eux, ne t'instruiront-ils pas? Certainement, ils te le diront, ils tireront de leur expérience ces propos:
11. 'Le papyrus pousse-t-il sans marais? Le roseau grandit-il sans eau?
12. Encore vert et sans qu'on ne l'ait coupé, il sèche plus vite que toutes les herbes.'
13. »Voilà ce qui arrive à tous ceux qui oublient Dieu, et l'espérance de l'impie s'évanouira.
14. Ses certitudes sont fragiles, sa sécurité n'est qu'une toile d'araignée.
15. Il s'appuie sur sa maison, mais elle n'est pas solide; il s'y cramponne, mais elle ne résiste pas.
16. Rempli de sève en plein soleil, il développe ses rameaux sur son jardin,
17. ses racines s'entrelacent dans un tas de cailloux, il scrute le creux des pierres.
18. Si on l'arrache de l'endroit qu'il occupait, celui-ci le renie: 'Je ne t'ai jamais vu!'
19. »Voilà tout le bonheur que lui procure sa conduite! Puis, sur le même sol, d'autres surgissent après lui.
20. Non, Dieu ne rejette pas l'homme intègre et il n'affermit pas les mains de ceux qui font le mal.
21. Bientôt il remplira ta bouche de rires, et tes lèvres de cris de joie.
22. Ceux qui te détestent seront couverts de honte, la tente des méchants disparaîtra.»
