1. Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?
2. Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof.
3. They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.
4. They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.
5. Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children.
6. They reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.
7. They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.
8. They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.
9. They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor.
10. They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;
11. Which make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.
12. Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.
13. They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.
14. The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.
15. The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face.
16. In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.
17. For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.
18. He is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards.
19. Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned.
20. The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.
21. He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow.
22. He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.
23. Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways.
24. They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.
25. And if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?
1. »Pourquoi le Tout-Puissant ne réserve-t-il pas des temps pour le jugement et pourquoi ceux qui le connaissent ne voient-ils pas les jours de son intervention?
2. On déplace les bornes, on vole des troupeaux et on les conduit au pâturage,
3. on s'empare de l'âne des orphelins, on prend pour gage le boeuf de la veuve,
4. on écarte les pauvres du chemin, on force tous les faibles du pays à se cacher.
5. Pareils à des ânes sauvages dans le désert, ils doivent partir au travail dès l'aube pour chercher leur nourriture, mais ils n'ont que des plaines arides pour trouver du pain à leurs enfants.
6. Ils coupent le fourrage qui reste dans les champs, ils grappillent dans la vigne du méchant.
7. Ils passent la nuit tout nus, sans habit, sans protection contre le froid.
8. Ils sont trempés par les fortes averses des montagnes et, faute de refuge, ils se blottissent contre les rochers.
9. On arrache l'orphelin à sa mère, on réclame des gages au pauvre.
10. Ils vont tout nus, sans habit. Ils doivent porter des gerbes tout en restant eux-mêmes affamés.
11. Ils font de l'huile dans les domaines des riches, ils écrasent le raisin au pressoir, et pourtant ils restent assoiffés.
12. De la ville montent les soupirs de la population, les blessés appellent au secours. Et Dieu ne prête pas attention à ces actes écoeurants!
13. »D'autres se révoltent contre la lumière: ils ignorent ses voies, ils ne s'attachent pas à ses sentiers.
14. L'assassin se lève avec la lumière, il tue le malheureux et le pauvre, et pendant la nuit il se mue en voleur.
15. L'oeil de l'homme adultère guette le crépuscule: 'Personne ne me verra', se dit-il, et il met un voile sur son visage.
16. La nuit ils forcent les maisons, le jour ils se tiennent enfermés; ils ne connaissent pas la lumière.
17. C'est que pour eux tous, le matin est synonyme d'ombre de la mort: ils n'ignorent pas les terreurs de l'ombre de la mort.
18. »Pourtant, d'après vous, le méchant serait tout léger à la surface de l'eau, il n'aurait droit sur la terre qu'à une part maudite et ne prendrait jamais le chemin des vignes!
19. Tout comme la sécheresse et la chaleur absorbent la fonte de la neige, le séjour des morts engloutirait ceux qui pèchent.
20. Le ventre de sa mère oublierait l'homme injuste, les vers feraient leurs délices de lui. On ne se souviendrait plus de lui, il serait brisé comme un arbre,
21. lui qui dépouille la femme stérile, sans enfants, lui qui ne traite pas bien la veuve.
22. »Non! Dieu prolonge par sa force les jours des tyrans, et les voilà debout quand ils ne comptaient plus sur la vie.
23. Il leur permet de vivre en sécurité et ils en profitent, mais il surveille leur conduite.
24. Ils se sont élevés quelque temps, mais ils ne sont plus là: ils s'effondrent et sont fauchés comme tous les autres, ils sont coupés comme la tête d'un épi.
25. Si tel n'est pas le cas, qui pourra prouver que je mens et réduire à néant mes affirmations?»
