1. Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;
2. How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.
3. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;
4. Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
5. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.
6. Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.
7. Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
8. I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.
9. For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
10. And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.
11. Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.
12. For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.
13. For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened:
14. But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:
15. As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.
16. But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.
17. For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you.
18. And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches;
19. And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:
20. Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us:
21. Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
22. And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.
23. Whether any do inquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be inquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.
24. Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.
1. Par ailleurs, frères et soeurs, nous vous faisons connaître la grâce que Dieu a accordée aux Eglises de la Macédoine:
2. au milieu même de la grande épreuve de leur souffrance, leur joie débordante et leur pauvreté profonde les ont conduits à faire preuve d'une très grande générosité.
3. Je l'atteste, ils ont donné volontairement selon leurs moyens, et même au-delà de leurs moyens,
4. et c'est avec beaucoup d'insistance qu'ils nous ont demandé la grâce de prendre part à ce service en faveur des saints.
5. Ils ont fait plus que ce que nous espérions, car ils se sont d'abord donnés eux-mêmes au Seigneur, puis à nous, par la volonté de Dieu.
6. Nous avons donc encouragé Tite à parachever, chez vous aussi, ce geste de générosité, comme il l'avait d'ailleurs commencé.
7. De votre côté, vous avez tout en abondance: la foi, la parole, la connaissance, le zèle à tout point de vue et l'amour pour nous. Faites en sorte que la même abondance se manifeste dans cet acte de grâce.
8. Je ne dis pas cela pour donner un ordre, mais pour éprouver la sincérité de votre amour par l'exemple du zèle des autres.
9. En effet, vous connaissez la grâce de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ: pour vous il s'est fait pauvre alors qu'il était riche, afin que par sa pauvreté vous soyez enrichis.
10. C'est un avis que je donne à ce sujet et c'est ce qui vous convient, puisque dès l'année dernière vous avez été les premiers non seulement à faire une collecte, mais aussi à la vouloir.
11. Menez-la donc maintenant à bien afin que sa réalisation corresponde, en fonction de vos moyens, à l'empressement que vous avez mis à la vouloir.
12. Quand la bonne volonté existe, on est bien accueilli en fonction de ce que l'on a, et non de ce que l'on n'a pas.
13. En effet, il ne s'agit pas de vous exposer à la détresse pour en soulager d'autres, mais de suivre un principe d'égalité:
14. dans les circonstances actuelles votre abondance pourvoira à leurs besoins, afin que leur abondance aussi pourvoie à vos besoins. C'est ainsi qu'il y aura égalité,
15. conformément à ce qui est écrit: Celui qui avait ramassé beaucoup n'avait rien de trop et celui qui avait ramassé peu ne manquait de rien.
16. Que Dieu soit remercié, lui qui a mis dans le coeur de Tite le même zèle pour vous!
17. En effet, il a accepté notre demande et c'est même avec un nouveau zèle et de son plein gré qu'il part chez vous.
18. Nous envoyons avec lui le frère dont toutes les Eglises font l'éloge pour son annonce de l'Evangile.
19. Il a de plus été choisi par les Eglises pour être notre compagnon de voyage dans ce geste de générosité que nous accomplissons à la gloire du Seigneur [lui-même] et en témoignage de notre bonne volonté.
20. Nous voulons en effet éviter qu'on nous critique au sujet de la forte somme dont nous avons la charge,
21. car nous recherchons ce qui est bien non seulement devant le Seigneur, mais aussi devant les hommes.
22. Avec eux nous envoyons notre frère, dont nous avons souvent, à bien des occasions, pu apprécier le zèle, et il en montre plus encore cette fois à cause de sa grande confiance en vous.
23. En ce qui concerne Tite, il est mon associé et mon collaborateur auprès de vous; quant à nos frères, ils sont les envoyés des Eglises, la gloire de Christ.
24. A la vue des Eglises, donnez-leur donc la preuve de votre amour et montrez-leur que nous avons raison d'être fiers de vous.
