1. Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:
2. Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
3. Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
4. And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.
5. And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.
6. Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
7. After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
8. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.
9. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.
10. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
11. Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;
12. And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.
13. And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.
14. And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
15. And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.
16. And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17. The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
19. And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,
20. And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
21. And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
22. And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
23. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
24. Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
27. And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30. And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31. And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
34. And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
35. And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
36. And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.
37. But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
38. And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.
39. And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.
40. And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
1. Il se rendit ensuite à Derbe et à Lystre. Il y avait là un disciple appelé Timothée, fils d'une femme juive croyante et d'un père grec.
2. Les frères de Lystre et d'Iconium rendaient un bon témoignage de lui.
3. Paul voulut l'emmener avec lui; il le prit et le circoncit à cause des Juifs qui étaient dans ces régions, car tous savaient que son père était grec.
4. Dans les villes où ils passaient, ils transmettaient aux frères les décisions prises par les apôtres et les anciens de Jérusalem en recommandant de les respecter.
5. Les Eglises se fortifiaient dans la foi et augmentaient en nombre chaque jour.
6. Empêchés par le Saint-Esprit d'annoncer la parole en Asie, ils traversèrent la Phrygie et la Galatie.
7. Arrivés près de la Mysie, ils se préparaient à entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit [de Jésus] ne le leur permit pas.
8. Ils traversèrent alors la Mysie et descendirent à Troas.
9. Pendant la nuit, Paul eut une vision; un Macédonien lui apparut et le supplia: «Passe en Macédoine, secours-nous!»
10. Suite à cette vision de Paul, nous avons aussitôt cherché à nous rendre en Macédoine, concluant que le Seigneur nous appelait à y annoncer la bonne nouvelle.
11. Après avoir embarqué à Troas, nous avons fait voile directement vers Samothrace, et le lendemain vers Néapolis.
12. De là nous sommes allés à Philippes qui est la première ville du district de Macédoine et une colonie. Nous avons passé quelques jours dans la ville même.
13. Le jour du sabbat, nous nous sommes rendus à l'extérieur de la ville, au bord d'une rivière où nous pensions trouver un lieu de prière. Nous nous sommes assis et avons parlé aux femmes qui étaient réunies.
14. L'une d'elles s'appelait Lydie. C'était une marchande de pourpre originaire de la ville de Thyatire, qui craignait Dieu. Elle nous écoutait et le Seigneur a ouvert son coeur pour qu'elle soit attentive à ce que disait Paul.
15. Après avoir été baptisée avec sa famille, elle nous a invités en disant: «Si vous me jugez fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison et logez-y», et elle a fortement insisté pour que nous acceptions.
16. Alors que nous nous rendions au lieu de prière, une jeune esclave qui avait un esprit de divination est venue à notre rencontre. Par ses prédictions, elle procurait un grand profit à ses maîtres.
17. Elle s'est mise à nous suivre, Paul et nous, en criant: «Ces hommes sont les serviteurs du Dieu très-haut et ils nous annoncent le chemin du salut.»
18. Elle a fait cela pendant plusieurs jours. Paul, agacé, s'est retourné et a dit à l'esprit: «Je t'ordonne, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir d'elle.» Il est sorti au moment même.
19. Quand les maîtres de la servante ont vu disparaître l'espoir de leur gain, ils se sont emparés de Paul et Silas et les ont traînés sur la place publique devant les magistrats.
20. Ils les ont présentés aux juges en disant: «Ces hommes sèment le trouble dans notre ville. Ce sont des Juifs
21. et ils annoncent des coutumes qu'il ne nous est pas permis d'accepter ni de suivre, à nous qui sommes romains.»
22. La foule s'est aussi soulevée contre eux, et les juges ont fait arracher leurs vêtements et ordonné qu'on les batte à coups de fouet.
23. Après les avoir roués de coups, ils les ont jetés en prison en recommandant au gardien de la prison de les surveiller de près.
24. Face à une telle consigne, le gardien les a jetés dans la prison intérieure et a emprisonné leurs pieds dans des entraves.
25. Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas priaient et chantaient les louanges de Dieu, et les prisonniers les écoutaient.
26. Tout à coup, il y a eu un tremblement de terre si violent que les fondations de la prison ont été ébranlées. Toutes les portes se sont immédiatement ouvertes et les liens de tous les prisonniers ont été détachés.
27. Lorsque le gardien de la prison s'est réveillé et a vu les portes de la prison ouvertes, il a tiré son épée, prêt à se tuer car il croyait que les prisonniers s'étaient enfuis.
28. Mais Paul a crié d'une voix forte: «Ne te fais pas de mal, car nous sommes tous ici.»
29. Alors le gardien a demandé de la lumière, est entré précipitamment et s'est jeté tout tremblant aux pieds de Paul et de Silas.
30. Il les a fait sortir et a dit: «Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?»
31. Paul et Silas ont répondu: «Crois au Seigneur Jésus[-Christ] et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta famille.»
32. Et ils lui ont annoncé la parole du Seigneur, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
33. A cette heure-là de la nuit, le gardien les a emmenés pour laver leurs plaies. Il a immédiatement été baptisé, lui et tous les siens.
34. Après les avoir conduits chez lui, il leur a servi à manger. Il se réjouissait avec toute sa famille d'avoir cru en Dieu.
35. Quand il a fait jour, les juges ont envoyé leurs agents dire au gardien de la prison: «Relâche ces hommes.»
36. Le gardien a rapporté ces paroles à Paul: «Les juges ont fait dire de vous relâcher. Sortez donc maintenant et partez dans la paix!»
37. Mais Paul a dit aux agents: «Après nous avoir fait battre en public et sans jugement alors que nous sommes romains, ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous feraient sortir en secret? Il n'en est pas question. Qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous remettre en liberté!»
38. Les agents ont rapporté ces paroles aux juges, qui ont été effrayés en apprenant que Paul et Silas étaient romains.
39. Ils sont venus leur présenter des excuses et les ont libérés en leur demandant de quitter la ville.
40. Une fois sortis de la prison, ils sont entrés chez Lydie et, après avoir vu et encouragé les frères et soeurs, ils sont partis.
