1. And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed.
2. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren.
3. Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
4. But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles.
5. And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them,
6. They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:
7. And there they preached the gospel.
8. And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:
9. The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
10. Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
11. And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men.
12. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.
13. Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.
14. Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out,
15. And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:
16. Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.
17. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
18. And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them.
19. And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead.
20. Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.
21. And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,
22. Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
23. And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.
24. And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
25. And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia:
26. And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.
27. And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
28. And there they abode long time with the disciples.
1. A Iconium de même, Paul et Barnabas entrèrent dans la synagogue des Juifs, et ils parlèrent de telle manière qu'une grande foule de Juifs et de non-Juifs crurent.
2. Mais les Juifs restés incrédules excitèrent l'esprit des non-Juifs et provoquèrent leur hostilité contre les frères.
3. Paul et Barnabas restèrent donc assez longtemps à Iconium; ils parlaient avec assurance, appuyés sur le Seigneur qui rendait témoignage à la parole de sa grâce en permettant qu'il se fasse par leur intermédiaire des signes miraculeux et des prodiges.
4. La population de la ville se divisa: les uns étaient du côté des Juifs, les autres du côté des apôtres.
5. Alors que les non-Juifs et les Juifs, avec leurs chefs, se préparaient à les maltraiter et à les lapider,
6. Paul et Barnabas, avertis de la situation, se réfugièrent dans les villes de la Lycaonie, à Lystre, à Derbe et dans les environs.
7. Là aussi, ils annoncèrent la bonne nouvelle.
8. A Lystre, un homme impotent des pieds se tenait assis; il était infirme de naissance et n'avait jamais marché.
9. Il écoutait Paul parler. Celui-ci fixa les regards sur lui et, voyant qu'il avait la foi pour être sauvé,
10. il lui dit d'une voix forte: «Lève-toi droit sur tes pieds!» Il se leva d'un bond et se mit à marcher.
11. A la vue de ce que Paul avait fait, la foule se mit à dire tout haut en lycaonien: «Les dieux sont descendus vers nous sous une forme humaine.»
12. Ils appelaient Barnabas Zeus, et Paul Hermès, parce que c'était lui qui prenait la parole.
13. Le prêtre de Zeus, dont le temple était à l'entrée de la ville, amena des taureaux avec des guirlandes vers les portes. Il voulait, de même que la foule, offrir un sacrifice.
14. Quand ils apprirent cela, les apôtres Barnabas et Paul déchirèrent leurs vêtements et se précipitèrent vers la foule
15. en s'écriant: «Pourquoi faites-vous cela? Nous aussi, nous sommes des êtres humains de la même nature que vous, et nous vous apportons une bonne nouvelle en vous appelant à renoncer à ces idoles sans consistance pour vous tourner vers le Dieu vivant qui a fait le ciel, la terre, la mer et tout ce qui s'y trouve.
16. Dans les générations passées, il a laissé toutes les nations suivre leurs propres voies.
17. Pourtant, il n'a pas cessé de rendre témoignage à ce qu'il est par le bien qu'il fait: il vous envoie du ciel les pluies et les saisons fertiles, il vous comble de nourriture et remplit votre coeur de joie.»
18. C'est à peine s'ils purent, par ces paroles, empêcher la foule de leur offrir un sacrifice.
19. Alors arrivèrent d'Antioche et d'Iconium des Juifs qui gagnèrent la foule. Après avoir lapidé Paul, ils le traînèrent hors de la ville, pensant qu'il était mort.
20. Cependant, quand les disciples l'entourèrent, il se leva et entra dans la ville. Le lendemain, il partit pour Derbe avec Barnabas.
21. Après avoir évangélisé cette ville et fait un certain nombre de disciples, ils retournèrent à Lystre, à Iconium et à Antioche.
22. Ils fortifiaient l'esprit des disciples, les encourageaient à persévérer dans la foi et disaient: «C'est à travers beaucoup de difficultés qu'il nous faut entrer dans le royaume de Dieu.»
23. Ils désignèrent des anciens dans chaque Eglise et, après avoir prié et jeûné, ils les confièrent au Seigneur en qui ils avaient cru.
24. Traversant ensuite la Pisidie, ils vinrent en Pamphylie.
25. Ils annoncèrent la parole à Perge, puis ils descendirent à Attalie.
26. De là ils embarquèrent pour Antioche, leur point de départ, où on les avait confiés à la grâce de Dieu pour la tâche qu'ils venaient d'accomplir.
27. Après leur arrivée, Paul et Barnabas réunirent l'Eglise et racontèrent tout ce que Dieu avait fait avec eux et comment il avait ouvert la porte de la foi aux non-Juifs.
28. Ils restèrent assez longtemps avec les disciples.
