1. For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,
2. The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,
3. The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counseller, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.
4. And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
5. And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
6. When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
7. In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
8. For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
9. The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
10. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
11. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.
12. As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.
13. The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people.
14. The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
15. What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the LORD GOD of hosts.
16. Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:
17. Therefore the LORD will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.
18. In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,
19. The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,
20. The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,
21. The rings, and nose jewels,
22. The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,
23. The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.
24. And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
25. Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
26. And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.
1. Le Seigneur, l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, va retirer de Jérusalem et de Juda tout appui et toute ressource, toute ressource de pain et toute ressource d'eau,
2. le héros et l'homme de guerre, le juge et le prophète, le devin et l'ancien,
3. le chef de cinquantaine et le magistrat, le conseiller, l'habile artisan et l'expert en magie.
4. Je leur donnerai des garçons pour chefs et des gamins capricieux domineront sur eux.
5. L'oppression sera réciproque parmi le peuple: chacun opprimera son prochain; le jeune garçon maltraitera le vieillard, et le vaurien celui qui jouit des honneurs.
6. Un homme ira jusqu'à s'emparer de son frère dans la maison paternelle: «Tu as un habit, tu seras donc notre chef! Prends en main ces décombres!»
7. Le jour même il répondra: «Je ne suis pas médecin et il n'y a ni pain ni habit dans ma maison. Ne me désignez pas comme chef du peuple!»
8. Oui, Jérusalem trébuche et Juda s'écroule, parce que leurs paroles et leur manière d'agir sont dirigées contre l'Eternel, défiant ses glorieux regards.
9. L'expression de leur visage témoigne contre eux et, comme l'a fait Sodome, ils dévoilent leur péché sans rien en cacher. Malheur à eux, car ils préparent eux-mêmes leur perte!
10. Dites au sujet du juste: «Cela ira bien», car il jouira du fruit de son activité.
11. Malheur au méchant! Il connaîtra le malheur, car il récoltera le salaire de ses actes.
12. Mon peuple a pour oppresseurs des enfants et des femmes dominent sur lui. Mon peuple, ceux qui te conduisent t'égarent et détruisent la voie dans laquelle tu marches.
13. L'Eternel se présente pour plaider, il est debout pour juger les peuples.
14. L'Eternel entre en jugement avec les anciens de son peuple et avec ses chefs: «Vous avez dévasté la vigne! Les biens volés au pauvre sont dans vos maisons!
15. De quel droit piétinez-vous mon peuple et écrasez-vous la dignité des pauvres?» déclare le Seigneur, l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.
16. L'Eternel dit: Les filles de Sion sont orgueilleuses et marchent le cou tendu et le regard effronté, elles vont à petits pas et font résonner les boucles qui ornent leurs pieds.
17. A cause de cela, le Seigneur rendra chauve le sommet de leur tête, l'Eternel dégarnira leur front.
18. Ce jour-là, le Seigneur enlèvera les boucles qui servent d'ornement à leurs pieds, ainsi que les filets et les croissants,
19. les boucles d'oreilles, les bracelets et les voiles,
20. les diadèmes, les chaînettes des pieds et les ceintures, les boîtes à parfums et les amulettes,
21. les bagues et les anneaux du nez,
22. les habits précieux et les larges robes, les manteaux et les sacs à main,
23. les tissus fins et les chemises fines, les turbans et les châles.
24. Au lieu de parfum, il y aura de la pourriture; au lieu de ceinture, une corde; au lieu de cheveux bouclés, une tête chauve; au lieu d'un large manteau, un sac étroit; une marque faite au fer rouge au lieu de la beauté.
25. Tes hommes tomberont sous l'épée, tes héros tomberont au cours du combat.
26. Les portes de Sion gémiront et seront dans le deuil. Dépouillée, elle s'assiéra par terre.
