1. Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
2. If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.
3. Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,
4. Have we not power to eat and to drink?
5. Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
6. Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?
7. Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
8. Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
9. For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
10. Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
11. If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
12. If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
13. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the alter are partakers with the alter?
14. Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
15. But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
16. For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
17. For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
18. What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
19. For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
20. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
21. To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
22. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
23. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.
24. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
1. Ne suis-je pas libre? Ne suis-je pas apôtre? N'ai-je pas vu Jésus[-Christ] notre Seigneur? N'êtes-vous pas mon œuvre dans le Seigneur?
2. Si pour d'autres je ne suis pas apôtre, je le suis au moins pour vous, car vous êtes l'empreinte qui authentifie mon service en tant qu'apôtre dans le Seigneur.
3. C'est là ma défense contre ceux qui m'accusent.
4. N'avons-nous pas le droit de manger et de boire?
5. N'avons-nous pas le droit d'emmener avec nous une soeur qui soit notre femme, comme le font les autres apôtres, les frères du Seigneur et Céphas?
6. Ou bien sommes-nous les seuls, Barnabas et moi, à ne pas avoir le droit de ne pas travailler?
7. Qui donc sert dans une armée à ses propres frais? Qui plante une vigne et n'en mange pas le fruit? Qui prend soin d'un troupeau et ne se nourrit pas du lait du troupeau?
8. Est-ce purement d'un point de vue humain que je dis cela? La loi ne le dit-elle pas aussi?
9. En effet, il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse: Tu ne mettras pas de muselière au boeuf quand il foule le grain. Dieu s'inquiète-t-il des boeufs
10. ou bien est-ce principalement à cause de nous qu'il parle? Oui, c'est à cause de nous que cela a été écrit, car celui qui laboure doit labourer avec espérance, et celui qui bat le blé doit le faire avec l'espoir de recevoir sa part.
11. Si nous avons semé pour vous les biens spirituels, est-ce trop si nous récoltons une part de vos biens matériels?
12. Si d'autres exercent ce droit sur vous, n'est-ce pas plutôt à nous d'en jouir? Mais nous n'avons pas recouru à ce droit; au contraire, nous supportons tout afin de ne pas créer d'obstacle à l'Evangile de Christ.
13. Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui assurent le service du culte sont nourris par le temple, que ceux qui servent à l'autel reçoivent une part de ce qui est offert sur l'autel?
14. De même aussi, le Seigneur a prescrit à ceux qui annoncent l'Evangile de vivre de l'Evangile.
15. Quant à moi, je n'ai eu recours à aucun de ces droits, et je n'écris pas cela pour qu'ils me soient accordés, car j'aimerais mieux mourir plutôt que de me laisser enlever ce sujet de fierté.
16. Si j'annonce l'Evangile, il n'y a pour moi aucun sujet de fierté, car c'est une nécessité qui m'est imposée, et malheur à moi si je n'annonce pas l'Evangile!
17. Si je le fais de bon coeur, j'en ai la récompense; mais si je le fais malgré moi, c'est une charge qui m'est confiée.
18. Quelle est donc ma récompense? C'est d'offrir gratuitement l'Evangile [de Christ] que j'annonce, sans faire usage de mon droit de prédicateur de l'Evangile.
19. En effet, bien que libre vis-à-vis de tous, je me suis fait l'esclave de tous afin de gagner le plus grand nombre.
20. Avec les Juifs, j'ai été comme un Juif afin de gagner les Juifs; avec ceux qui sont sous la loi de Moïse, comme si j'étais sous la loi [ bien que n'étant pas moi-même sous la loi ] afin de gagner ceux qui sont sous la loi;
21. avec ceux qui sont sans la loi, comme si j'étais sans la loi bien que je ne sois pas sans la loi de Dieu, puisque je me conforme à la loi de Christ afin de gagner ceux qui sont sans la loi.
22. J'ai été [comme] faible avec les faibles afin de gagner les faibles. Je me suis fait tout à tous afin d'en sauver de toute manière quelques-uns,
23. et je fais cela à cause de l'Evangile afin d'avoir part à ses bénédictions.
24. Ne savez-vous pas que les concurrents dans le stade courent tous, mais qu'un seul remporte le prix? Courez de manière à le remporter.
25. Tous les athlètes s'imposent toutes sortes de privations, et ils le font pour obtenir une couronne qui va se détruire; mais nous, c'est pour une couronne indestructible.
26. Moi donc, je cours, mais pas comme à l'aventure; je boxe, mais non pour battre l'air.
27. Au contraire, je traite durement mon corps et je le discipline, de peur d'être moi-même disqualifié après avoir prêché aux autres.
