1. Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
2. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
3. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
4. Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
5. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6. Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7. To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8. But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9. Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10. But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11. For there is no respect of persons with God.
12. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13. (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14. For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15. Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
16. In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
17. Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
18. And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
19. And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,
20. An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
21. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?
22. Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?
23. Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
24. For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
25. For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.
26. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
27. And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?
28. For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29. But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
1. Qui que tu sois, homme, toi qui juges, tu es donc inexcusable. En effet, en jugeant les autres tu te condamnes toi-même, puisque toi qui juges tu agis comme eux.
2. Nous savons que le jugement de Dieu contre ceux qui agissent ainsi est conforme à la vérité.
3. Et penses-tu, toi qui juges les auteurs de tels actes et qui les fais aussi, que tu échapperas au jugement de Dieu?
4. Ou méprises-tu les richesses de sa bonté, de sa patience et de sa générosité en ne reconnaissant pas que la bonté de Dieu te pousse à changer d'attitude?
5. Par ton endurcissement et ton refus de te repentir, tu t'amasses un trésor de colère pour le jour où Dieu révélera sa colère et son juste jugement.
6. Il traitera chacun conformément à ses actes :
7. à ceux qui, par leur persévérance à faire le bien, recherchent l'honneur, la gloire et l'incorruptibilité, il donnera la vie éternelle;
8. mais il réserve son indignation et sa colère à ceux qui, par esprit de révolte, rejettent la vérité et obéissent à l'injustice.
9. La détresse et l'angoisse atteindront tout être humain qui fait le mal, le Juif d'abord, mais aussi le non-Juif.
10. La gloire, l'honneur et la paix seront pour tout homme qui fait le bien, le Juif d'abord, mais aussi le non-Juif,
11. car devant Dieu il n'y a pas de favoritisme.
12. Tous ceux qui ont péché sans la loi périront aussi sans la loi, et tous ceux qui ont péché sous la loi seront jugés au moyen de la loi.
13. En effet, ce ne sont pas ceux qui écoutent la loi qui sont justes devant Dieu, mais ce sont ceux qui la mettent en pratique qui seront déclarés justes.
14. Quand des non-Juifs qui n'ont pas la loi font naturellement ce que prescrit la loi, ils se tiennent lieu de loi à eux-mêmes, bien qu'ils n'aient pas la loi.
15. Ils montrent que l'oeuvre de la loi est écrite dans leur coeur, car leur conscience en rend témoignage et leurs pensées les accusent ou les défendent tour à tour.
16. C'est ce qui paraîtra le jour où, conformément à l'Evangile que je prêche, Dieu jugera par Jésus-Christ le comportement secret des hommes.
17. Toi qui te donnes le nom de Juif, tu te reposes sur la loi, tu places ta fierté dans ton Dieu,
18. tu connais sa volonté et tu discernes ce qui est important, car tu es instruit par la loi.
19. Tu es convaincu d'être le conducteur des aveugles, la lumière de ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres,
20. l'éducateur des ignorants, le maître des enfants parce que tu possèdes dans la loi l'expression de la connaissance et de la vérité.
21. Toi donc qui enseignes les autres, tu ne t'enseignes pas toi-même! Toi qui prêches de ne pas voler, tu voles!
22. Toi qui dis de ne pas commettre d'adultère, tu commets l'adultère! Toi qui as les idoles en horreur, tu pilles les temples!
23. Toi qui places ta fierté dans la loi, tu déshonores Dieu en la transgressant!
24. En effet, le nom de Dieu est blasphémé parmi les nations à cause de vous, comme cela est écrit.
25. Certes, la circoncision est utile si tu mets en pratique la loi; mais si tu la violes, ta circoncision devient incirconcision.
26. Si donc l'incirconcis respecte les commandements de la loi, son incirconcision ne sera-t-elle pas comptée comme circoncision?
27. Ainsi, l'homme qui accomplit la loi sans être circoncis physiquement ne te condamnera-t-il pas, toi qui la transgresses tout en ayant la loi écrite et la circoncision?
28. Le Juif, ce n'est pas celui qui en a l'apparence, et la circoncision, ce n'est pas celle qui est visible dans le corps.
29. Mais le Juif, c'est celui qui l'est intérieurement, et la circoncision, c'est celle du coeur, accomplie par l'Esprit et non par la loi écrite. La louange que reçoit ce Juif ne vient pas des hommes, mais de Dieu.
