1. Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
2. But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
3. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
8. Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
9. But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
10. Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
11. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
12. Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.
13. Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
14. And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
15. Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
16. Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
17. They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
18. But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
19. My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
20. I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
21. Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
22. For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
23. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
24. Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
26. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
28. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
30. Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

2. Mais il est sous des tuteurs et des curateurs jusqu'au temps déterminé par le père.
3. Nous aussi, lorsque nous étions des enfants, nous étions asservis sous les rudiments du monde.
4. Mais quand l'accomplissement du temps est venu, Dieu a envoyé son Fils, né d'une femme, [et] soumis à la Loi.
5. Afin qu'il rachetât ceux qui étaient sous la Loi, et que nous reçussions l'adoption des enfants.
6. Et parce que vous êtes enfants, Dieu a envoyé l'Esprit de son Fils dans vos cœurs, criant Abba, [c'est-à-dire] Père.
7. Maintenant donc tu n'es plus serviteur, mais fils; or si tu es fils, tu es aussi héritier de Dieu par Christ.
8. Mais lorsque vous ne connaissiez point Dieu, vous serviez ceux qui de [leur] nature ne sont point Dieux.
9. Et maintenant que vous avez connu Dieu, ou plutôt que vous avez été connus de Dieu, comment retournez-vous encore à ces faibles et misérables éléments, auxquels vous voulez encore servir comme auparavant?
10. Vous observez les jours, les mois, les temps et les années.
11. Je crains pour vous que peut-être je n'aie travaillé en vain parmi vous.
12. Soyez comme moi; car je [suis] aussi comme vous; je vous [en] prie, mes frères; vous ne m'avez fait aucun tort.
13. Et vous savez comment je vous ai ci-devant évangélisé dans l'infirmité de la chair.
14. Et vous n'avez point méprisé ni rejeté mon épreuve, telle qu'elle était en ma chair; mais vous m'avez reçu comme un Ange de Dieu, et comme Jésus-Christ même.
15. Quelle était donc la déclaration [que vous faisiez] de votre bonheur? car je vous rends témoignage que, s'il eût été possible, vous eussiez arraché vos yeux, et vous me les eussiez donnés.
16. Suis-je donc devenu votre ennemi, en vous disant la vérité?
17. Ils sont jaloux de vous, [mais] ce n'est pas comme il faut; au contraire, ils vous veulent exclure, afin que vous soyez jaloux d'eux.
18. Mais il est bon d'être toujours zélé pour le bien, et de ne l'être pas seulement quand je suis présent avec vous.
19. Mes petits enfants, pour lesquels enfanter je travaille de nouveau, jusqu'à ce que Christ soit formé en vous :
20. Je voudrais être maintenant avec vous, et changer de langage, car je suis en perplexité sur votre sujet.
21. Dites-moi, vous qui voulez être sous la Loi, n'entendez-vous point la Loi?
22. Car il est écrit qu'Abraham a eu deux fils, l'un de la servante, et l'autre de la [femme] libre.
23. Mais celui qui était de la servante, naquit selon la chair; et celui qui était de la [femme] libre, naquit par la promesse.
24. Or ces choses doivent être entendues par allégorie : car ce sont les deux alliances; l'une du mont de Sinaï, qui ne produit que des esclaves, et c'est Agar.
25. Car ce nom d'Agar veut dire Sinaï; qui est une montagne en Arabie, et correspondante à la Jérusalem de maintenant, laquelle sert avec ses enfants.
26. Mais la Jérusalem d'en haut est [la femme] libre, et c'est la mère de nous tous.
27. Car il est écrit : réjouis-toi, stérile, qui n'enfantais point; efforce-toi, et t'écrie, toi qui n'étais point en travail d'enfant; car il y a beaucoup plus d'enfants de [celle qui avait été] laissée, que de celle qui avait un mari.
28. Or pour nous, mes frères, nous sommes enfants de la promesse, ainsi qu'Isaac.
29. Mais comme alors celui qui était né selon la chair, persécutait celui [qui était né] selon l'Esprit, il [en est] de même aussi maintenant.
30. Mais que dit l'Ecriture? chasse la servante et son fils : car le fils de la servante ne sera point héritier avec le fils de la [femme] libre.
31. Or mes frères, nous ne sommes point enfants de la servante, mais de la [femme] libre.
