1. And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2. And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3. And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
4. But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5. And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6. And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
7. And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8. Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
9. And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
10. But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.
11. And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
12. And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
13. For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
14. And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.
15. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.
16. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.
17. And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
18. And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:
19. Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
20. Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
21. And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
22. Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
23. The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.
24. Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
25. And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
27. And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:
28. And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
29. And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
30. And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
31. And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
32. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
33. And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
34. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our Father.
35. And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
36. Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
37. And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
38. And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.
1. Les deux anges arrivèrent à Sodome vers le soir. Lot était assis à la porte de la ville. Quand Lot les vit, il se leva pour aller à leur rencontre et se prosterna le visage contre terre.
2. Puis il dit: «Mes seigneurs, entrez donc chez votre serviteur pour y passer la nuit. Vous vous laverez les pieds, vous vous lèverez de bon matin puis vous poursuivrez votre route.» «Non, répondirent-ils, nous passerons la nuit sur la place.»
3. Mais Lot insista tellement auprès d'eux qu'ils le suivirent et vinrent chez lui. Il leur prépara un festin, fit cuire des pains sans levain, et ils mangèrent.
4. Ils n'étaient pas encore couchés que les habitants de la ville, les habitants de Sodome, entourèrent la maison, depuis les enfants jusqu'aux plus âgés. Toute la population était accourue.
5. Ils appelèrent Lot et lui dirent: «Où sont les hommes qui sont entrés chez toi cette nuit? Fais-les sortir vers nous pour que nous couchions avec eux.»
6. Lot sortit vers eux à l'entrée de la maison et ferma la porte derrière lui.
7. Il dit: «Mes frères, je vous en prie, ne faites pas le mal!
8. J'ai ici deux filles qui sont vierges. Je vous les amènerai dehors et vous leur ferez ce qu'il vous plaira. Seulement, ne faites rien à ces hommes puisqu'ils sont venus s'abriter sous mon toit.»
9. Ils dirent: «Pousse-toi!» Ils ajoutèrent: «Celui-ci est venu séjourner chez nous en étranger et il veut faire le juge! Eh bien, nous te ferons pire qu'à eux.» Ils poussèrent violemment Lot et s'avancèrent pour briser la porte.
10. Cependant, les hommes tendirent la main, firent rentrer Lot vers eux dans la maison et fermèrent la porte.
11. Puis ils frappèrent d'aveuglement ceux qui étaient à l'entrée de la maison, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, de sorte qu'ils se fatiguèrent de chercher la porte.
12. Les hommes dirent à Lot: «Qui as-tu encore ici? Gendres, fils, filles et tout ce qui t'appartient dans la ville, fais-les sortir de là.
13. Nous allons détruire cet endroit parce que le cri contre ses habitants est grand devant l'Eternel. L'Eternel nous a envoyés pour le détruire.»
14. Lot sortit et parla à ses gendres, ceux qui avaient épousé ses filles: «Levez-vous, dit-il, sortez de là, car l'Eternel va détruire la ville.» Mais ses gendres crurent qu'il plaisantait.
15. Dès l'aube, les anges insistèrent auprès de Lot en disant: «Lève-toi, prends ta femme et tes deux filles qui se trouvent ici, sinon tu disparaîtras dans la punition qui s'abattra sur la ville.»
16. Comme il s'attardait, les hommes les prirent par la main, lui, sa femme et ses deux filles, car l'Eternel voulait l'épargner. Ils le firent sortir et le conduisirent à l'extérieur de la ville.
17. Après les avoir fait sortir, l'un d'eux dit: «Echappe-toi pour sauver ta vie. Ne regarde pas derrière toi et ne t'arrête nulle part dans la plaine. Réfugie-toi dans la montagne, sinon tu disparaîtras.»
18. Lot leur dit: «Oh, non, Seigneur!
19. Moi, ton serviteur, j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux et tu as montré la grandeur de ta bonté envers moi en me laissant la vie sauve. Cependant, je ne peux pas me réfugier sur la montagne avant que le désastre m'atteigne, si bien que je mourrai.
20. Regarde cette ville: elle est assez proche pour que je m'y réfugie et elle est petite. Si seulement je pouvais m'y sauver! N'est-elle pas petite? Ainsi je resterai en vie!»
21. Il lui dit: « Je t'accorde encore cette faveur et je ne détruirai pas la ville dont tu parles.
22. Dépêche-toi de t'y réfugier, car je ne peux rien faire jusqu'à ce que tu y sois arrivé.» C'est pour cela que l'on a donné à cette ville le nom de Tsoar.
23. Le soleil se levait sur la terre lorsque Lot entra dans Tsoar.
24. Alors l'Eternel fit pleuvoir du soufre et du feu sur Sodome et sur Gomorrhe. Cela venait du ciel, de la part de l'Eternel.
25. Il détruisit ces villes, toute la plaine, tous les habitants des villes et les plantes du sol.
26. La femme de Lot regarda en arrière et se transforma en statue de sel.
27. Abraham se leva de bon matin pour aller à l'endroit où il s'était tenu devant l'Eternel.
28. Il porta ses regards du côté de Sodome et de Gomorrhe et sur tout le territoire de la plaine, et il vit monter de la terre une fumée pareille à celle d'un fourneau.
29. Lorsque Dieu détruisit les villes de la plaine, il se souvint d'Abraham, c'est pourquoi il fit échapper Lot au désastre par lequel il bouleversa les villes où celui-ci s'était installé.
30. Lot quitta Tsoar pour la hauteur et s'installa dans la montagne avec ses deux filles, car il avait peur de rester à Tsoar. Il habita dans une grotte avec ses deux filles.
31. L'aînée dit à la plus jeune: «Notre père est vieux et il n'y a pas d'homme dans la région pour s'unir à nous comme cela se fait partout.
32. Viens, faisons boire du vin à notre père et couchons avec lui afin de lui donner une descendance.»
33. Elles firent donc boire du vin à leur père cette nuit-là, et l'aînée alla coucher avec son père. Il ne remarqua ni quand elle se coucha, ni quand elle se leva.
34. Le lendemain, l'aînée dit à la plus jeune: «J'ai couché la nuit dernière avec mon père. Faisons-lui boire du vin cette nuit encore et va coucher avec lui afin que nous lui donnions une descendance.»
35. Elles firent boire du vin à leur père cette nuit-là encore, et la cadette alla coucher avec lui. Il ne remarqua ni quand elle se coucha, ni quand elle se leva.
36. Les deux filles de Lot tombèrent enceintes de leur père.
37. L'aînée mit au monde un fils qu'elle appela Moab. C'est l'ancêtre des Moabites, jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
38. La plus jeune mit aussi un fils au monde et elle l'appela Ben-Ammi. C'est l'ancêtre des Ammonites, jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
