1. But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
2. For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
3. And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
4. For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
5. But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
6. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
7. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
8. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
9. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
10. To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
11. Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
12. Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
13. I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
14. Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
15. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
16. To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
17. For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
1. J'ai donc décidé en moi-même de ne pas retourner chez vous dans la tristesse.
2. En effet, si je vous attriste, qui peut me réjouir, sinon celui que j'ai attristé?
3. J'ai écrit comme je l'ai fait pour ne pas être attristé, à mon arrivée, par ceux qui devaient me donner de la joie; car en ce qui vous concerne, je suis convaincu que ma joie est aussi la vôtre, à vous tous.
4. C'est dans une grande souffrance, le coeur angoissé et avec beaucoup de larmes que je vous ai écrit, non pas afin de vous attrister, mais afin que vous sachiez quel amour débordant j'ai pour vous.
5. Si quelqu'un a été une cause de tristesse, ce n'est pas moi qu'il a attristé, c'est vous tous, du moins dans une certaine mesure, pour ne rien exagérer.
6. Le blâme qui lui a été infligé par la majorité d'entre vous est suffisant pour cet homme.
7. Maintenant, au contraire, vous devez plutôt lui pardonner et l'encourager, de peur qu'il ne soit accablé par une tristesse excessive.
8. Je vous engage donc à faire preuve d'amour envers lui,
9. car je vous ai aussi écrit dans le but de savoir, en vous mettant à l'épreuve, si vous êtes obéissants à tout point de vue.
10. Or à qui vous pardonnez, je pardonne aussi; et si j'ai pardonné quelque chose à quelqu'un, je l'ai fait à cause de vous, en présence de Christ,
11. afin de ne pas laisser à Satan l'avantage sur nous, car nous n'ignorons pas ses intentions.
12. Quand je suis arrivé à Troas pour annoncer l'Evangile de Christ, bien que le Seigneur m'y ait ouvert une porte, je n'avais pas l'esprit en repos parce que je n'avais pas trouvé mon frère Tite.
13. C'est pourquoi j'ai pris congé d'eux et je suis parti pour la Macédoine.
14. Que Dieu soit remercié, lui qui nous fait toujours triompher en Christ et qui propage partout, à travers nous, le parfum de sa connaissance!
15. Nous sommes en effet pour Dieu la bonne odeur de Christ parmi ceux qui sont sauvés et parmi ceux qui périssent:
16. pour les uns, un parfum de mort qui donne la mort, pour les autres, un parfum de vie qui donne la vie. Et pour cette mission, qui donc est qualifié?
17. En effet, nous ne falsifions pas la parole de Dieu, comme le font les autres, mais c'est avec pureté, c'est de la part de Dieu, en Christ et devant Dieu que nous parlons.
