1. Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
2. Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.
3. The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:
4. And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
5. In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,
6. And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.
7. But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
8. For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.
9. Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
11. For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
13. But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
14. Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15. Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17. Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18. And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19. From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.
20. For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.
21. For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
22. Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.
23. Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.
24. Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?
25. When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and rie in their place?
26. For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.
27. For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.
28. Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.
29. This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
1. Malheur à la couronne éclatante dont sont fiers les ivrognes d'Ephraïm, à la fleur fanée qui fait l'éclat de sa parure sur la cime de la vallée fertile, à ceux qui s'enivrent de vin!
2. Voici qu'arrive, de la part du Seigneur, un homme fort et puissant, pareil à un orage de grêle ou une tempête destructrice, à des trombes de pluie qui inondent tout: il le jette sur la terre avec puissance.
3. Elle sera piétinée, la couronne éclatante dont sont fiers les ivrognes d'Ephraïm;
4. la fleur fanée qui fait l'éclat de sa parure sur la cime de la vallée fertile sera comme une figue précoce qu'on aperçoit avant la récolte: à peine dans la main elle est aussitôt avalée.
5. Ce jour-là, l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, sera une couronne majestueuse et une parure magnifique pour le reste de son peuple.
6. Il sera un esprit de droiture pour celui qui siège au tribunal et une force pour ceux qui repoussent l'ennemi jusqu'à ses portes.
7. Mais eux aussi, ils titubent sous l'effet du vin et les liqueurs fortes les égarent; prêtres et prophètes titubent sous l'effet des liqueurs fortes, ils sont troublés par le vin, ils s'égarent à cause des liqueurs fortes. Ils titubent en prophétisant, ils vacillent en rendant leurs verdicts.
8. Toutes les tables sont pleines de vomissements infects; il n'y a plus aucune place intacte.
9. Ils disent: «A qui veut-il enseigner la connaissance? A qui veut-il faire comprendre son message? Est-ce à des enfants qui viennent d'être sevrés, qui viennent de quitter la poitrine de leur mère?
10. En effet, c'est ordre sur ordre, ordre sur ordre, règle sur règle, règle sur règle, un peu ici, un peu là.»
11. Eh bien, *c'est par des hommes aux lèvres balbutiantes et par une langue étrangère que l'Eternel parlera à ce peuple.
12. Il leur avait dit: «Voici le lieu de repos. Laissez se reposer celui qui est fatigué! Voici le moment de la détente!» Mais ils n'ont pas voulu écouter,
13. et pour eux la parole de l'Eternel sera vraiment ordre sur ordre, ordre sur ordre, règle sur règle, règle sur règle, un peu ici, un peu là, afin qu'en marchant ils tombent à la renverse et se brisent, afin qu'ils soient pris au piège et capturés.
14. Ecoutez donc la parole de l'Eternel, hommes habitués à la moquerie, vous qui dominez sur ce peuple à Jérusalem!
15. Vous dites: «Nous avons conclu une alliance avec la mort, nous avons fait un pacte avec le séjour des morts: quand le fléau débordant passera, il ne nous atteindra pas, car nous avons la fausseté pour refuge et le mensonge pour abri.»
16. A cause de cela, voici ce que dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel: *Je mets dans Sion, en guise de fondation, une pierre, une pierre choisie, angulaire, précieuse, solidement posée. Celui qui s'appuie sur elle sera en sécurité.
17. J'ai établi la droiture comme une règle, et la justice comme un fil à plomb. La grêle balaiera le refuge de la fausseté et l'eau inondera l'abri du mensonge.
18. Votre alliance avec la mort sera supprimée, votre pacte avec le séjour des morts ne tiendra pas. Lorsque le torrent destructeur passera, il vous écrasera.
19. Chaque fois qu'il passera, il vous emportera. Oui, il passera tous les matins, le jour et la nuit, et son bruit seul provoquera la terreur.
20. Le lit sera trop court pour qu'on puisse s'y étendre, et la couverture trop étroite pour qu'on puisse s'en envelopper.
21. En effet, l'Eternel se lèvera comme sur la montagne de Peratsim, il tremblera d'indignation comme dans la vallée de Gabaon pour faire son oeuvre, son oeuvre étrange, pour exécuter son travail, son travail inhabituel.
22. Maintenant, ne faites pas les moqueurs, sinon votre situation empirera! La destruction de tout le pays est décidée, je l'ai appris du Seigneur, de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.
23. Prêtez l'oreille et écoutez-moi! Soyez attentifs et écoutez ma parole!
24. Celui qui laboure en vue des semailles le fait-il constamment? Remue-t-il et bêche-t-il sans cesse son terrain?
25. Après avoir aplani la surface du sol, n'y disperse-t-il pas de la nigelle et ne sème-t-il pas du cumin? Ne met-il pas le blé par rangées, l'orge à une place marquée et l'épeautre sur les bords?
26. Son Dieu lui a enseigné la règle à suivre, il l'a instruit:
27. on n'écrase pas la nigelle avec le traîneau et la roue du chariot ne passe pas sur le cumin, mais on bat la nigelle avec un bâton et le cumin avec une baguette;
28. par contre, on doit écraser le blé pour en faire du pain, on ne le bat pas indéfiniment, et si l'on fait passer la roue du chariot et les chevaux dessus, il n'est pas écrasé.
29. Cela aussi vient de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. Il distribue de merveilleux conseils et augmente les capacités de discernement.
