1. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
3. If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.
5. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7. (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
9. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
10. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
11. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
12. For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart.
13. For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause.
14. For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
15. And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
16. Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
17. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
21. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
1. Nous savons, en effet, que si notre habitation terrestre, qui n'est qu'une tente, est détruite, nous avons dans le ciel un édifice qui est l'oeuvre de Dieu, une habitation éternelle qui n'est pas faite par la main de l'homme.
2. Et nous gémissons dans cette tente, avec l'ardent désir de revêtir notre domicile céleste,
3. puisque, après avoir été ainsi revêtus, nous ne serons pas trouvés nus.
4. En effet, nous qui sommes dans cette tente, nous gémissons, accablés, parce que nous voulons non pas nous dévêtir, mais au contraire nous revêtir, afin que ce qui est mortel soit englouti par la vie.
5. Et celui qui nous a préparés pour cela, c'est Dieu, qui nous a donné le gage de l'Esprit.
6. Nous sommes donc toujours pleins de confiance et nous savons que, tant que nous habitons dans ce corps, nous sommes loin de notre patrie, loin du Seigneur,
7. car nous marchons par la foi et non par la vue.
8. Oui, nous sommes pleins de confiance et nous aimerions mieux quitter ce corps pour aller vivre auprès du Seigneur.
9. C'est aussi pour cela que nous nous efforçons de lui être agréables, soit que nous vivions dans ce corps, soit que nous le quittions.
10. En effet, il nous faudra tous comparaître devant le tribunal de Christ afin que chacun reçoive le salaire de ce qu'il aura fait, bien ou mal, alors qu'il était dans son corps.
11. Ainsi donc, puisque nous savons ce qu'est la crainte du Seigneur, nous cherchons à convaincre les hommes. Quant à Dieu, il nous connaît, et j'espère que dans votre conscience vous nous connaissez aussi.
12. Nous n'allons pas de nouveau nous recommander nous-mêmes auprès de vous, mais nous voulons vous donner l'occasion de vous montrer fiers à notre sujet, afin que vous puissiez répondre à ceux qui mettent leur fierté dans les apparences et non dans ce qui relève du coeur.
13. En effet, si nous avons fait preuve de folie, c'était pour Dieu; si nous sommes raisonnables, c'est pour vous.
14. C'est que l'amour de Christ nous presse, parce que nous sommes convaincus que si un seul est mort pour tous, tous donc sont morts.
15. Et s'il est mort pour tous, c'était afin que ceux qui vivent ne vivent plus pour eux-mêmes, mais pour celui qui est mort et ressuscité pour eux.
16. Ainsi, désormais, nous ne percevons plus personne de manière humaine; et si nous avons connu Christ de manière purement humaine, maintenant nous ne le connaissons plus ainsi.
17. Si quelqu'un est en Christ, il est une nouvelle créature. Les choses anciennes sont passées; voici, toutes choses sont devenues nouvelles.
18. Et tout cela vient de Dieu qui nous a réconciliés avec lui par [Jésus-]Christ et qui nous a donné le ministère de la réconciliation.
19. En effet, Dieu était en Christ: il réconciliait le monde avec lui-même en ne chargeant pas les hommes de leurs fautes, et il a mis en nous la parole de la réconciliation.
20. Nous sommes donc des ambassadeurs pour Christ, comme si Dieu adressait par nous son appel. Nous supplions au nom de Christ: «Soyez réconciliés avec Dieu!
21. [En effet,] celui qui n'a pas connu le péché, il l'a fait devenir péché pour nous afin qu'en lui nous devenions justice de Dieu.»
