1. Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the LORD in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.
2. And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD,
3. And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,
4. And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son.
5. And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.
6. So kill the passover, and sanctify yourselves, and prepare your brethren, that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
7. And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king's substance.
8. And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.
9. Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.
10. So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king's commandment.
11. And they killed the passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood from their hands, and the Levites flayed them.
12. And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.
13. And they roasted the passover with fire according to the ordinance: but the other holy offerings sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the people.
14. And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.
15. And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king's seer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
16. So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day, to keep the passover, and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar of the LORD, according to the commandment of king Josiah.
17. And the children of Israel that were present kept the passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days.
18. And there was no passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a passover as Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
19. In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this passover kept.
20. After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.
21. But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
22. Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.
23. And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.
24. His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.
25. And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and the singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations.
26. Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and his goodness, according to that which was written in the law of the LORD,
27. And his deeds, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.
1. Josias célébra la Pâque en l'honneur de l'Eternel à Jérusalem et l'on égorgea l'agneau pascal le quatorzième jour du premier mois.
2. Il établit les prêtres dans leurs fonctions et les encouragea au service de la maison de l'Eternel.
3. Il dit aux Lévites qui enseignaient tout Israël et qui étaient consacrés à l'Eternel: «Placez l'arche sainte dans le temple qu'a construit Salomon, fils de David, le roi d'Israël; vous n'avez plus à la porter sur l'épaule. Servez désormais l'Eternel, votre Dieu, et son peuple, Israël.
4. Tenez-vous prêts par famille selon vos divisions, suivant les prescriptions de David, le roi d'Israël, et de son fils Salomon.
5. Occupez votre place dans le sanctuaire en fonction des différentes familles définies pour vos frères, les membres du peuple, et de la répartition des familles des Lévites.
6. Sacrifiez l'agneau pascal, consacrez-vous et préparez-le pour vos frères en vous conformant à la parole de l'Eternel transmise par Moïse.»
7. Josias préleva pour les membres du peuple, pour tous ceux qui se trouvaient là, des agneaux et des chevreaux au nombre de 30'000, le tout pour la Pâque, ainsi que 3000 boeufs; cela fut pris sur les biens du roi.
8. Ses chefs prélevèrent aussi des offrandes volontaires pour le peuple, les prêtres et les Lévites. Hilkija, Zacharie et Jehiel, qui étaient responsables de la maison de Dieu, donnèrent 2600 agneaux et 300 boeufs aux prêtres pour la Pâque.
9. Conania, Shemaeja et Nathanaël, ses frères, Hashabia, Jeïel et Jozabad, chefs des Lévites, donnèrent 5000 agneaux et 500 boeufs aux Lévites pour la Pâque.
10. Le service s'organisa, et les prêtres et les Lévites occupèrent leur place selon leurs divisions, d'après l'ordre du roi.
11. Ils égorgèrent les victimes de la Pâque. Les prêtres faisaient l'aspersion du sang qu'ils recevaient des Lévites et les Lévites enlevaient la peau des victimes.
12. Ils mettaient les éléments destinés aux holocaustes à part pour les donner aux différentes familles des membres du peuple, afin qu'ils les offrent à l'Eternel conformément à ce qui est écrit dans le livre de Moïse; ce fut le cas pour les boeufs.
13. Ils firent cuire l'agneau pascal au feu, conformément aux règles. Quant aux choses saintes, on les fit cuire dans des marmites, des chaudrons et des poêles. Puis ils s'empressèrent de les distribuer à tout le peuple.
14. Ensuite ils préparèrent ce qui était pour eux et pour les prêtres. En effet, les prêtres, les descendants d'Aaron, furent occupés jusqu'à la nuit à offrir les holocaustes et les graisses. C'est pourquoi les Lévites préparèrent ce qui était pour eux et pour les prêtres, les descendants d'Aaron.
15. Les musiciens, les descendants d'Asaph, étaient à leur place, conformément aux ordres de David, d'Asaph, d'Héman et de Jeduthun, le voyant du roi, et les portiers se tenaient à chaque porte; ils n'eurent pas à s'écarter de leur service, car leurs frères, les Lévites, préparèrent ce qui leur était destiné.
16. Ainsi, tout le service de l'Eternel pour célébrer la Pâque et pour offrir des holocaustes sur l'autel de l'Eternel fut organisé ce jour-là, conformément à l'ordre du roi Josias.
17. Les Israélites qui se trouvaient là célébrèrent la Pâque à ce moment-là et la fête des pains sans levain pendant 7 jours.
18. Aucune Pâque pareille à celle-là n'avait été célébrée en Israël depuis l'époque du prophète Samuel, et aucun des rois d'Israël n'avait célébré une Pâque pareille à celle que célébrèrent Josias, les prêtres, les Lévites, tout Juda, les Israélites qui se trouvaient là et les habitants de Jérusalem.
19. Ce fut la dix-huitième année du règne de Josias que cette Pâque fut célébrée.
20. Après tout cela, après que Josias eut réparé la maison de l'Eternel, Néco, le roi d'Egypte, monta pour combattre à Karkemish, vers l'Euphrate. Josias marcha à sa rencontre,
21. et Néco lui envoya des messagers pour dire: «Que me veux-tu, roi de Juda? Ce n'est pas contre toi que je viens aujourd'hui, c'est contre une dynastie avec laquelle je suis en guerre. Dieu m'a dit de me dépêcher. Ne t'oppose pas à Dieu, puisqu'il est avec moi, de peur qu'il ne te détruise.»
22. Mais Josias ne s'écarta pas de son chemin et il se déguisa pour l'attaquer, sans écouter les paroles de Néco, qui venaient pourtant de Dieu. Il s'avança pour combattre dans la vallée de Meguiddo.
23. Les archers tirèrent sur le roi Josias et le roi dit à ses serviteurs: «Emmenez-moi, car je suis gravement blessé.»
24. Ses serviteurs le retirèrent du char pour le faire monter sur son deuxième char et l'amenèrent à Jérusalem. Il mourut et fut enterré dans le tombeau de ses ancêtres. Tout Juda et Jérusalem pleurèrent Josias.
25. Jérémie fit une complainte sur lui; tous les chanteurs et toutes les chanteuses ont parlé de lui dans leurs complaintes jusqu'à aujourd'hui, et ils en ont fait une prescription pour Israël. Ces chants sont écrits dans les Complaintes.
26. Le reste des actes de Josias et sa piété conforme à ce qui est prescrit dans la loi de l'Eternel,
27. ses actes, des premiers aux derniers, cela est décrit dans les annales des rois d'Israël et de Juda.
