1. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father's stead in Jerusalem.
2. Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.
3. And the king of Egypt put him down at Jerusalem, and condemned the land in an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
4. And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.
5. Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God.
6. Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.
7. Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.
8. Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.
9. Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.
10. And when the year was expired, king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.
11. Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.
12. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD.
13. And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the LORD God of Israel.
14. Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.
15. And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
16. But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.
17. Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.
18. And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon.
19. And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.
20. And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
21. To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
22. Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
23. Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
1. Le peuple du pays prit Joachaz, fils de Josias, pour le faire roi à la place de son père à Jérusalem.
2. Joachaz avait 23 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 3 mois à Jérusalem.
3. Le roi d'Egypte le destitua à Jérusalem et imposa au pays un tribut de 3000 kilos d'argent et 30 kilos d'or.
4. Le roi d'Egypte établit Eliakim, le frère de Joachaz, roi sur Juda et sur Jérusalem, et il changea son nom en Jojakim. Quant à son frère Joachaz, il le captura et l'emmena en Egypte.
5. Jojakim avait 25 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 11 ans à Jérusalem. Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel son Dieu.
6. Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, monta contre lui et l'attacha avec des chaînes en bronze pour le conduire à Babylone.
7. Nebucadnetsar emporta des ustensiles de la maison de l'Eternel à Babylone et les mit dans son temple à Babylone.
8. Le reste des actes de Jojakim, les actes abominables dont il s'est fait l'auteur et ce qu'on a pu relever contre lui, cela est décrit dans les annales des rois d'Israël et de Juda. Son fils Jojakin devint roi à sa place.
9. Jojakin avait 18 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 3 mois et 10 jours à Jérusalem. Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel.
10. L'année suivante, le roi Nebucadnetsar le fit emmener à Babylone avec les ustensiles précieux de la maison de l'Eternel, et il établit roi sur Juda et sur Jérusalem Sédécias, le frère du père de Jojakin.
11. Sédécias avait 21 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 11 ans à Jérusalem.
12. Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel, son Dieu. Il ne s'humilia pas devant le prophète Jérémie, qui lui parlait de la part de l'Eternel.
13. Il se révolta même contre le roi Nebucadnetsar, alors que celui-ci lui avait fait prêter serment au nom de Dieu. Il se montra réfractaire et endurcit son coeur, au lieu de revenir à l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
14. Tous les chefs des prêtres et le peuple multiplièrent eux aussi les infidélités en imitant toutes les pratiques abominables des nations. Ils rendirent impure la maison de l'Eternel, celle qu'il avait consacrée à Jérusalem.
15. L'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, leur envoya très tôt et sans se lasser des messagers, car il voulait épargner son peuple et sa propre demeure,
16. mais ils se moquèrent des messagers de Dieu, méprisèrent ses paroles et rirent de ses prophètes, jusqu'à ce que la colère de l'Eternel contre son peuple devienne sans remède.
17. Alors l'Eternel fit monter contre eux le roi des Babyloniens et il tua leurs jeunes gens par l'épée dans leur sanctuaire. Il n'épargna ni le jeune homme ni la jeune fille, ni l'ancien ni le vieillard: il livra tout entre ses mains.
18. Nebucadnetsar emporta à Babylone tous les ustensiles de la maison de Dieu, grands et petits, les trésors de la maison de l'Eternel et ceux du roi et de ses chefs.
19. Les Babyloniens brûlèrent la maison de Dieu, démolirent les murailles de Jérusalem, livrèrent au feu tous ses palais et détruisirent tous les objets précieux.
20. Nebucadnetsar exila à Babylone ceux qui échappèrent à l'épée et ils lui furent asservis, à lui et à ses fils, jusqu'à ce que le royaume de Perse prenne le pouvoir.
21. Ainsi s'accomplit la parole de l'Eternel prononcée par Jérémie: jusqu'à ce que le pays ait compensé ses sabbats, durant toute la période où il fut dévasté, il se reposa, jusqu'à la fin des 70 ans.
22. La première année du règne de Cyrus sur la Perse, l'Eternel réveilla l'esprit de Cyrus, roi de Perse, afin que s'accomplisse la parole qu'il avait prononcée par Jérémie, et celui-ci fit faire de vive voix, et même par écrit, la proclamation que voici dans tout son royaume:
23. «Voici ce que dit Cyrus, roi de Perse: L'Eternel, le Dieu du ciel, m'a donné tous les royaumes de la terre et m'a désigné pour lui construire un temple à Jérusalem, en Juda. Qui parmi vous fait partie de son peuple? Que l'Eternel, son Dieu, soit avec lui et qu'il y monte!»
