1. Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.
2. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
3. For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.
4. And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.
5. And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
6. And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.
7. And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.
8. Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.
9. And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
10. And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and amend the house:
11. Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.
12. And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.
13. Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.
14. And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.
15. And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.
16. And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.
17. And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.
18. Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.
19. And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.
20. And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king's, saying,
21. Go, inquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.
22. And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.
23. And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,
24. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
25. Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.
26. And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
27. Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
28. Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
29. Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
30. And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
31. And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.
32. And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
33. And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
1. Josias avait 8 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 31 ans à Jérusalem.
2. Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel et il marcha sur les voies de son ancêtre David, il ne s'en écarta ni à droite ni à gauche.
3. La huitième année de son règne, alors qu'il était encore jeune, il commença à rechercher le Dieu de son ancêtre David, et la douzième année il commença à purifier Juda et Jérusalem des hauts lieux, des poteaux sacrés, des sculptures sacrées et des idoles en métal fondu.
4. On démolit en sa présence les autels des Baals et il abattit les piliers consacrés au soleil qui étaient dessus; il brisa les poteaux sacrés, les sculptures sacrées et les idoles en métal fondu et les réduisit en poussière, et il dispersa la poussière sur les tombeaux de ceux qui leur avaient offert des sacrifices.
5. Quant aux ossements des prêtres, il les brûla sur leurs autels. C'est ainsi qu'il purifia Juda et Jérusalem.
6. Dans les villes de Manassé, d'Ephraïm, de Siméon et même de Nephthali, et dans leurs ruines tout autour,
7. il démolit les autels, mit en pièces les poteaux sacrés et les sculptures sacrées jusqu'à les réduire en poussière, et il abattit tous les piliers consacrés au soleil dans tout le pays d'Israël. Puis il retourna à Jérusalem.
8. La dix-huitième année de son règne, après avoir purifié le pays et le temple, il envoya Shaphan, fils d'Atsalia, Maaséja, chef de la ville, et l'archiviste Joach, fils de Joachaz, réparer la maison de l'Eternel, son Dieu.
9. Ils allèrent trouver le grand-prêtre Hilkija et lui donnèrent l'argent qui avait été apporté dans la maison de Dieu. Les Lévites gardiens des portes l'avaient reçu de Manassé, d'Ephraïm et de tout le reste d'Israël ainsi que de tout Juda et Benjamin et des habitants de Jérusalem.
10. On le confia aux responsables chargés des travaux dans la maison de l'Eternel. Et ils l'employèrent pour ceux qui travaillaient aux réparations de la maison de l'Eternel,
11. pour les charpentiers et les maçons, pour les achats de pierres de taille et de bois destiné aux poutres et à la charpente des bâtiments que les rois de Juda avaient détruits.
12. Ces hommes agirent avec honnêteté dans leur travail. Ils étaient sous la surveillance de Jachath et Abdias, Lévites issus des descendants de Merari, de Zacharie et Meshullam, qui descendaient des Kehathites, et de tous les Lévites qui étaient d'habiles musiciens.
13. Ils étaient responsables des porteurs et dirigeaient tous les ouvriers occupés aux divers travaux. Il y avait aussi des Lévites secrétaires, commissaires et portiers.
14. Au moment où l'on sortait l'argent qui avait été apporté dans la maison de l'Eternel, le prêtre Hilkija trouva le livre de la loi de l'Eternel transmise par Moïse.
15. Alors Hilkija prit la parole et dit à Shaphan, le secrétaire: «J'ai trouvé le livre de la loi dans la maison de l'Eternel.» Hilkija donna le livre à Shaphan.
16. Shaphan apporta le livre au roi lorsqu'il lui fit son rapport. Il dit: «Tes serviteurs ont fait tout ce qui leur a été ordonné.
17. Ils ont ramassé l'argent qui se trouvait dans la maison de l'Eternel et l'ont confié aux inspecteurs et aux ouvriers.»
18. Puis Shaphan, le secrétaire, annonça au roi: «Le prêtre Hilkija m'a donné un livre.» Et Shaphan le lut devant le roi.
19. A l'écoute des paroles de la loi, le roi déchira ses habits.
20. Ensuite, il donna cet ordre à Hilkija, à Achikam, fils de Shaphan, à Abdon, fils de Michée, à Shaphan, le secrétaire, et à son propre serviteur Asaja:
21. «Allez consulter l'Eternel pour moi et pour ce qui reste en Israël et en Juda au sujet des paroles de ce livre qu'on a trouvé. En effet, elle doit être grande, la colère de l'Eternel prête à se déverser sur nous, parce que nos ancêtres n'ont pas respecté la parole de l'Eternel et ne se sont pas conformés à tout ce qui est prescrit dans ce livre.»
22. Hilkija et les hommes désignés par le roi allèrent trouver la prophétesse Hulda. Elle était la femme de Shallum, le gardien des habits, le fils de Thokehath et petit-fils de Hasra, et elle habitait à Jérusalem, dans la ville neuve. Une fois qu'ils lui eurent parlé comme convenu,
23. elle leur répondit: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Annoncez à l'homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi:
24. 'Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Je vais faire venir des malheurs sur cet endroit et sur ses habitants, conformément à toutes les malédictions écrites dans le livre qu'on a lu devant le roi de Juda.
25. Puisqu'ils m'ont abandonné et qu'ils ont offert des parfums à d'autres dieux afin de m'irriter par tout ce que leurs mains faisaient, ma colère se déverse sur cet endroit et elle ne s'éteindra pas.'
26. Mais vous annoncerez au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés pour consulter l'Eternel: 'Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, au sujet des paroles que tu as entendues:
27. Ton coeur a été touché, tu t'es humilié devant Dieu en entendant ses paroles contre cet endroit et contre ses habitants, tu t'es humilié devant moi, tu as déchiré tes habits et tu as pleuré devant moi. Eh bien, moi aussi, j'ai entendu cela, dit l'Eternel.
28. Je te ferai rejoindre tes ancêtres, tu rejoindras la tombe dans la paix et tes yeux ne verront pas tous les malheurs que je ferai venir sur cet endroit et sur ses habitants.'» Ils rapportèrent cette réponse au roi.
29. Le roi fit rassembler tous les anciens de Juda et de Jérusalem.
30. Puis il monta à la maison de l'Eternel avec tous les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem, les prêtres, les Lévites et tout le peuple, du plus grand au plus petit. Il lut devant eux toutes les paroles du livre de l'alliance qu'on avait trouvé dans la maison de l'Eternel.
31. Le roi se tenait sur son estrade et il conclut une alliance devant l'Eternel: il s'engagea à suivre l'Eternel et à respecter ses commandements, ses instructions et ses prescriptions de tout son coeur et de toute son âme, en appliquant les paroles de l'alliance écrites dans ce livre.
32. Il fit s'engager dans l'alliance tous ceux qui se trouvaient à Jérusalem et en Benjamin, et les habitants de Jérusalem se conformèrent à l'alliance de Dieu, du Dieu de leurs ancêtres.
33. Josias fit disparaître toutes les pratiques abominables de tous les territoires appartenant aux Israélites, et il obligea tous ceux qui se trouvaient en Israël à servir l'Eternel, leur Dieu. Pendant toute sa vie, ils ne se détournèrent pas de l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres.
