1. Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;
2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
3. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
4. Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:
5. Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
6. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
7. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
8. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
9. Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
10. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12. Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
14. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
15. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.
16. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
17. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
18. And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19. Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
1. Ainsi donc, puisque Christ a souffert [pour nous] dans son corps, vous aussi armez-vous de la même pensée: celui qui a souffert dans son corps en a fini avec le péché
2. afin de ne plus vivre en suivant les désirs des hommes, mais la volonté de Dieu, pendant le temps qu'il lui reste à vivre ici-bas.
3. C'est déjà bien suffisant d'avoir par le passé accompli la volonté des non-croyants en marchant dans les désordres, les convoitises, l'ivrognerie, les orgies et autres beuveries ainsi que dans les idolâtries criminelles.
4. Aussi trouvent-ils étrange que vous ne vous précipitiez plus avec eux dans le même débordement de débauche, et ils vous calomnient.
5. Ils rendront des comptes à celui qui est prêt à juger les vivants et les morts.
6. En effet, l'Evangile a aussi été annoncé aux morts afin qu'après avoir été jugés comme tous les hommes ici-bas ils vivent selon Dieu par l'Esprit.
7. La fin de toutes choses est proche. Soyez donc sages et sobres afin de vous livrer à la prière.
8. Avant tout, ayez un amour ardent les uns pour les autres, car l'amour couvrira une foule de péchés.
9. Exercez l'hospitalité les uns envers les autres sans murmurer.
10. Comme de bons intendants des diverses grâces de Dieu, mettez chacun au service des autres le don que vous avez reçu.
11. Si quelqu'un parle, qu'il annonce les paroles révélées de Dieu; si quelqu'un accomplit un service, qu'il le fasse avec la force que Dieu communique, afin qu'en tout Dieu reçoive la gloire qui lui est due à travers Jésus-Christ. C'est à lui qu'appartiennent la gloire et la puissance, aux siècles des siècles. Amen!
12. Mes bien-aimés, ne soyez pas surpris de la fournaise qui sévit parmi vous pour vous éprouver, comme s'il vous arrivait quelque chose d'étrange.
13. Réjouissez-vous, au contraire, de la part que vous prenez aux souffrances de Christ, afin d'être aussi dans la joie et dans l'allégresse lorsque sa gloire sera dévoilée.
14. Si vous êtes insultés à cause du nom de Christ, vous êtes heureux, parce que l'Esprit de gloire, l'Esprit de Dieu, repose sur vous. [Eux, ils blasphèment l'Esprit, tandis que vous, vous lui rendez gloire.]
15. Que personne parmi vous n'ait à souffrir pour avoir tué, volé, fait le mal ou pour s'être mêlé des affaires d'autrui.
16. Mais si quelqu'un souffre parce qu'il est chrétien, qu'il n'en ait pas honte. Au contraire, qu'il rende gloire à Dieu dans cette situation.
17. En effet, c'est le moment où le jugement commence, et il commence par la maison de Dieu. Or, si c'est par nous qu'il débute, quelle sera la fin de ceux qui n'obéissent pas à l'Evangile de Dieu?
18. Et si le juste est sauvé avec peine, que deviendront l'impie et le pécheur?
19. Ainsi, que ceux qui souffrent selon la volonté de Dieu s'en remettent à lui comme au fidèle Créateur, en faisant ce qui est bien.
