1. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
2. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
3. How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
4. God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
5. For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.
6. But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
7. Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
8. Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
9. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
10. For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
11. For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
12. Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
13. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
14. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
15. And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
16. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
17. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
18. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
1. C'est pourquoi nous devons d'autant plus nous attacher au message que nous avons entendu, de peur d'être entraînés à notre perte.
2. En effet, puisque la parole annoncée par l'intermédiaire des anges a été confirmée et que toute transgression et toute désobéissance ont reçu une juste sanction,
3. comment échapperons-nous si nous négligeons un si grand salut? Ce salut, annoncé d'abord par le Seigneur, nous a été confirmé par ceux qui l'ont entendu.
4. Dieu a appuyé leur témoignage par des signes, des prodiges et divers miracles, ainsi que par les dons du Saint-Esprit distribués conformément à sa volonté.
5. En effet, ce n'est pas à l'autorité d'anges que Dieu a soumis le monde à venir dont nous parlons.
6. Quelqu'un a d'ailleurs rendu quelque part ce témoignage: Qu'est-ce que l'homme, pour que tu te souviennes de lui, ou le fils de l'homme, pour que tu prennes soin de lui?
7. Tu l'as abaissé pour un peu de temps au-dessous des anges, tu l'as couronné de gloire et d'honneur [et tu lui as donné la domination sur ce que tes mains ont fait],
8. tu as tout mis sous ses pieds. En effet, en lui soumettant toute chose, Dieu n'a rien laissé qui échappe à son autorité. Maintenant pourtant, nous ne voyons pas encore que tout lui soit soumis.
9. Toutefois, celui qui a été abaissé pour un peu de temps au-dessous des anges, Jésus, nous le voyons couronné de gloire et d'honneur à cause de la mort qu'il a soufferte. Ainsi, par la grâce de Dieu, il a connu la mort pour tout être humain.
10. En effet, celui pour qui et par qui toute chose existe voulait conduire à la gloire beaucoup de fils; il lui convenait donc de qualifier parfaitement par des souffrances l'auteur de leur salut.
11. De fait, celui qui procure la sainteté et ceux qui en bénéficient ont tous une seule et même origine, c'est pourquoi il n'a pas honte de les appeler ses frères
12. lorsqu'il dit: J'annoncerai ton nom à mes frères, je te célébrerai au milieu de l'assemblée.
13. Et encore: Je me confierai en lui. Et enfin: Me voici, moi et les enfants que Dieu m'a donnés.
14. Puisque ces enfants ont en commun la condition humaine, lui-même l'a aussi partagée, de façon similaire. Ainsi, par sa mort, il a pu rendre impuissant celui qui exerçait le pouvoir de la mort, c'est-à-dire le diable,
15. et libérer tous ceux que la peur de la mort retenait leur vie durant dans l'esclavage.
16. En effet, assurément, ce n'est pas à des anges qu'il vient en aide, mais bien à la descendance d'Abraham.
17. Par conséquent, il devait devenir semblable en tout à ses frères afin d'être un grand-prêtre rempli de compassion et fidèle dans le service de Dieu pour faire l'expiation des péchés du peuple.
18. En effet, comme il a souffert lui-même lorsqu'il a été tenté, il peut secourir ceux qui sont tentés.
