1. Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2. That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
3. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4. Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6. And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9. Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10. And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12. That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
13. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
14. Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15. Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
16. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,
17. Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.
1. En ce qui concerne le retour de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ et notre rassemblement auprès de lui, nous vous le demandons, frères et soeurs:
2. ne vous laissez pas facilement ébranler dans votre bon sens ni troubler par une révélation, par une parole, ou par une lettre qui semblerait venir de nous, comme si le jour du Seigneur était déjà là.
3. Que personne ne vous trompe d'aucune manière. En effet, il faut que l'apostasie arrive d'abord et qu'apparaisse l'homme de péché, le fils de la perdition,
4. l'adversaire qui s'élève contre tout ce qu'on appelle Dieu ou qu'on adore; il va jusqu'à s'asseoir [comme Dieu] dans le temple de Dieu en se proclamant lui-même Dieu.
5. Ne vous rappelez-vous pas que je vous disais cela, lorsque j'étais encore chez vous?
6. Et maintenant vous savez ce qui le retient, afin qu'il n'apparaisse que lorsque le moment sera venu pour lui.
7. En effet, le mystère de l'impiété agit déjà. Il faut seulement que celui qui le retient encore ait disparu.
8. Alors apparaîtra l'impie que le Seigneur [Jésus] détruira par le souffle de sa bouche et qu'il anéantira par la manifestation de son retour.
9. La venue de cet impie se fera par la puissance de Satan, avec toutes sortes de miracles, de signes et de prodiges mensongers
10. et avec toutes les séductions de l'injustice pour ceux qui périssent parce qu'ils n'ont pas accueilli l'amour de la vérité pour être sauvés.
11. C'est pourquoi Dieu leur envoie une puissance d'égarement pour qu'ils croient au mensonge,
12. afin que tous ceux qui n'ont pas cru à la vérité mais ont pris plaisir à l'injustice soient condamnés.
13. Quant à nous, frères et soeurs bien-aimés du Seigneur, nous devons constamment dire à Dieu toute notre reconnaissance à votre sujet, parce que Dieu vous a choisis dès le commencement pour le salut par la sainteté que procure l'Esprit et par la foi en la vérité.
14. C'est à cela qu'il vous a appelés par notre Evangile, pour que vous possédiez la gloire de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ.
15. Ainsi donc, frères et soeurs, tenez ferme et retenez les enseignements que nous vous avons transmis, soit oralement, soit par notre lettre.
16. Que notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ lui-même et Dieu notre Père, qui nous a aimés et qui nous a donné par sa grâce une consolation éternelle et une bonne espérance,
17. encouragent votre coeur et vous affermissent dans toute bonne oeuvre et dans toute bonne parole!
