1. And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
2. And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
3. And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
4. And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
5. And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.
6. And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
7. And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
8. And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
9. And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
10. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
11. Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.
12. Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
13. And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
14. Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.
15. And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.
16. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
17. Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
18. For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
1. Israël était installé à Sittim. Le peuple commença alors à se livrer à la débauche avec les femmes moabites.
2. Elles invitèrent le peuple aux sacrifices en l'honneur de leurs dieux et le peuple mangea et se prosterna devant leurs dieux.
3. Israël s'attacha au dieu Baal-Peor et la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël.
4. L'Eternel dit à Moïse: «Rassemble tous les chefs du peuple et fais pendre les coupables devant l'Eternel en face du soleil, afin que la colère ardente de l'Eternel se détourne d'Israël.»
5. Moïse dit aux juges d'Israël: «Que chacun de vous tue ceux des siens qui se sont attachés à Baal-Peor.»
6. Un Israélite vint amener une Madianite vers ses frères, sous les yeux de Moïse et de toute l'assemblée des Israélites, alors qu'ils étaient en train de pleurer à l'entrée de la tente de la rencontre.
7. A cette vue, Phinées, fils d'Eléazar et petit-fils du prêtre Aaron, se leva au milieu de l'assemblée et prit une lance dans sa main.
8. Il suivit l'homme d'Israël dans sa tente et il les transperça tous les deux, l'homme d'Israël puis la femme, dans le bas-ventre. Le fléau s'arrêta alors parmi les Israélites.
9. Il y eut 24'000 morts suite à ce fléau.
10. L'Eternel dit à Moïse:
11. «Phinées, fils d'Eléazar et petit-fils du prêtre Aaron, a détourné ma fureur des Israélites, parce qu'il a été animé de mon zèle au milieu d'eux. Ainsi je n'ai pas, dans ma colère, détruit les Israélites.
12. C'est pourquoi tu diras que je conclus une alliance de paix avec lui.
13. Cette alliance, conclue avec lui et avec sa descendance après lui, lui assure pour toujours la fonction de prêtre, parce qu'il a été zélé pour son Dieu et qu'il a fait l'expiation pour les Israélites.»
14. L'Israélite qui fut tué avec la Madianite s'appelait Zimri. Il était fils de Salu et chef de famille des Siméonites.
15. La femme madianite qui fut tuée s'appelait Cozbi. Elle était la fille de Tsur, un chef de peuplades issues d'une famille madianite.
16. L'Eternel dit à Moïse:
17. «Traite les Madianites en ennemis et tuez-les.
18. En effet, ils se sont montrés vos ennemis en vous séduisant par leurs ruses dans les affaires de Peor et de Cozbi, la fille d'un chef madianite, leur soeur, tuée le jour du fléau qui a surgi à l'occasion de Peor.»
