1. Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
2. And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;
3. And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
4. Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.
5. And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.
6. And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
7. Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.
8. Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;
9. That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.
10. They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.
11. And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.
12. Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.
13. Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.
14. But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.
15. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.
16. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.
17. Thy children shall make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.
18. Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth.
19. For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants, and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.
20. The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.
21. Then shalt thou say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?
22. Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.
23. And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.
24. Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?
25. But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.
26. And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.
1. Iles, écoutez-moi! Peuples lointains, soyez attentifs! L'Eternel m'a appelé dès le ventre de ma mère, il a mentionné mon nom dès avant ma naissance.
2. Il a rendu ma bouche pareille à une épée tranchante, il m'a couvert de l'ombre de sa main. Il a fait de moi une flèche aiguë, il m'a caché dans son carquois.
3. Il m'a dit: «Tu es mon serviteur, Israël. Par toi je montrerai ma splendeur.»
4. Quant à moi, je disais: «C'est pour rien que je me suis fatigué, c'est pour le vide, c'est en pure perte que j'ai épuisé mes forces.» Pourtant, mon droit est auprès de l'Eternel et ma récompense auprès de mon Dieu.
5. Maintenant l'Eternel parle, lui qui m'a formé dès le ventre de ma mère pour que je sois son serviteur, pour que je ramène Jacob vers lui, pour qu'Israël soit rassemblé près de lui. J'ai de l'importance aux yeux de l'Eternel et mon Dieu est ma force.
6. Il dit: «C'est trop peu que tu sois mon serviteur pour relever les tribus de Jacob et pour ramener les restes d'Israël: *je t'établis pour être la lumière des nations, pour apporter mon salut jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.»
7. Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Saint d'Israël, celui qui le rachète, à l'homme qu'on méprise, qui fait horreur à la nation, à l'esclave des tyrans: «A ta vue, des rois se lèveront, des princes se prosterneront à cause de l'Eternel, qui est fidèle, du Saint d'Israël, qui t'a choisi.»
8. Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: *Au moment favorable je t'ai répondu, le jour du salut je t'ai secouru. Je te protégerai et je t'établirai pour faire alliance avec le peuple, pour relever le pays et distribuer les héritages aujourd'hui dévastés,
9. pour dire aux prisonniers: «Sortez!» et à ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres: «Montrez-vous!» Ils trouveront leur nourriture sur les chemins et des pâturages sur tous les sommets.
10. *Ils n'auront plus faim, ils n'auront plus soif, la chaleur brûlante et le soleil ne les frapperont plus. En effet, celui qui a compassion d'eux sera leur guide, et il les conduira vers des sources d'eau.
11. Je transformerai toutes mes montagnes en chemins et mes routes seront refaites.
12. Les voici, ils viennent de loin: les uns du nord, les autres de l'ouest, d'autres encore du pays de Sinim.
13. Ciel, réjouis-toi! Terre, crie d'allégresse! Montagnes, éclatez en cris de joie! En effet, l'Eternel console son peuple, il a compassion des plus humbles de ses membres.
14. Sion disait: «L'Eternel m'a abandonnée, le Seigneur m'a oubliée!»
15. Une femme oublie-t-elle l'enfant qu'elle allaite? N'a-t-elle pas compassion du fils qui est sorti de son ventre? Même si elle l'oubliait, moi je ne t'oublierai jamais.
16. Vois! Je t'ai gravée sur mes mains. Tes murailles sont constamment devant moi.
17. Tes fils accourent, tandis que ceux qui t'avaient détruite et dévastée partent de chez toi.
18. Lève les yeux et regarde tout autour: tous ils se rassemblent, ils viennent vers toi. Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, déclare l'Eternel, tu les enfileras tous comme des bijoux, tu t'en pareras à la manière d'une fiancée.
19. Oui, dans tes places dévastées et désertes, dans ton pays ruiné, tes habitants seront désormais à l'étroit, et ceux qui te dévoraient s'éloigneront.
20. Ils te répéteront, ces fils dont tu avais été privée: «L'espace est trop étroit pour moi. Fais-moi de la place, pour que je puisse m'installer!»
21. et tu diras dans ton coeur: «Qui m'a donné ces fils? J'étais privée d'enfants, j'étais stérile. J'étais en exil, mise à l'écart. Qui les a élevés? J'étais restée seule. Ceux-ci, où étaient-ils?»
22. Voici ce qu'a dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel: Je lèverai ma main en direction des nations, je dresserai mon étendard pour les peuples, et ils amèneront tes fils en les tenant dans les bras, ils porteront tes filles sur leurs épaules.
23. Des rois seront tes pères adoptifs et leurs princesses tes nourrices. Ils se prosterneront devant toi, le visage contre terre, et lécheront la poussière de tes pieds. Ainsi, tu reconnaîtras que je suis l'Eternel et que ceux qui comptent sur moi ne seront pas couverts de honte.
24. Arrachera-t-on à un homme fort sa capture? Les prisonniers justes s'échapperont-ils?
25. Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Les prisonniers de l'homme fort lui seront arrachés et la capture de l'homme violent s'échappera. J'accuserai moi-même tes accusateurs et je sauverai moi-même tes fils.
26. Je ferai manger leur propre chair à tes oppresseurs, ils s'enivreront avec leur propre sang comme si c'était du vin nouveau et tous reconnaîtront que je suis l'Eternel, ton sauveur, celui qui te rachète, le Dieu puissant de Jacob.
