1. And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about.
2. And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.
3. And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.
4. And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king's garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.
5. And the army of the Chaldees pursued after the king, and overtook him in the plains of Jericho: and all his army were scattered from him.
6. So they took the king, and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment upon him.
7. And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon.
8. And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem:
9. And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man's house burnt he with fire.
10. And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.
11. Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon, with the remnant of the multitude, did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away.
12. But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen.
13. And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD, did the Chaldees break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon.
14. And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the spoons, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away.
15. And the firepans, and the bowls, and such things as were of gold, in gold, and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away.
16. The two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made for the house of the LORD; the brass of all these vessels was without weight.
17. The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates upon the chapiter round about, all of brass: and like unto these had the second pillar with wreathen work.
18. And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door:
19. And out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the king's presence, which were found in the city, and the principal scribe of the host, which mustered the people of the land, and threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the city:
20. And Nebuzar-adan captain of the guard took these, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah:
21. And the king of Babylon smote them, and slew them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.
22. And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, ruler.
23. And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethahiah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.
24. And Gedaliah sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.
25. But it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, came, and ten men with him, and smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews and the Chaldees that were with him at Mizpah.
26. And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees.
27. And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison;
28. And he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon;
29. And changed his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him all the days of his life.
30. And his allowance was a continual allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life.
1. Alors, la neuvième année du règne de Sédécias, le dixième jour du dixième mois, Nebucadnetsar, le roi de Babylone, vint avec toute son armée attaquer Jérusalem; il installa son camp devant elle et construisit des retranchements tout autour d'elle.
2. Le siège de la ville dura jusqu'à la onzième année du règne de Sédécias.
3. Le neuvième jour du quatrième mois, la famine était si forte dans la ville qu'il n'y avait plus de pain pour la population du pays.
4. Alors on fit une brèche dans les remparts de la ville et tous les hommes de guerre s'enfuirent de nuit en passant par la porte située entre les deux murailles près du jardin du roi, alors même que les Babyloniens encerclaient la ville. Les fuyards prirent le chemin de la plaine.
5. Cependant, l'armée babylonienne poursuivit le roi et le rattrapa dans les plaines de Jéricho. Toute son armée se dispersa loin de lui.
6. Ils s'emparèrent du roi et le firent monter vers le roi de Babylone à Ribla. On prononça un jugement contre lui.
7. Les fils de Sédécias furent égorgés en sa présence, puis on lui creva les yeux, on l'attacha avec des chaînes en bronze et on le conduisit à Babylone.
8. Le septième jour du cinquième mois c'était la dix-neuvième année du règne de Nebucadnetsar sur Babylone Nebuzaradan, le chef des gardes et le serviteur du roi de Babylone, pénétra dans Jérusalem.
9. Il brûla la maison de l'Eternel, le palais royal et toutes les maisons de Jérusalem; il livra aux flammes toutes les maisons d'une certaine importance.
10. Toute l'armée babylonienne qui accompagnait le chef des gardes démolit les murailles formant l'enceinte de Jérusalem.
11. Nebuzaradan, le chef des gardes, emmena en exil les membres du peuple qui étaient restés dans la ville, ceux qui s'étaient déjà rendus au roi de Babylone et tout le reste de la population.
12. Toutefois, le chef des gardes laissa comme vignerons et comme agriculteurs une partie des pauvres du pays.
13. Les Babyloniens brisèrent les colonnes en bronze qui étaient dans la maison de l'Eternel, ainsi que les bases et la cuve en bronze qui s'y trouvaient, et ils en emportèrent le bronze à Babylone.
14. Ils prirent les cendriers, les pelles, les couteaux, les tasses et tous les ustensiles en bronze qu'on utilisait pour le culte.
15. Le chef des gardes prit encore les brûle-parfums et les coupes, aussi bien ce qui était en or que ce qui était en argent.
16. Quant aux deux colonnes, à la cuve et aux bases que Salomon avait faites pour la maison de l'Eternel, il était impossible de peser le bronze de tous ces éléments.
17. La hauteur d'une colonne était de 9 mètres et il y avait au-dessus un chapiteau en bronze haut d'un mètre et demi; autour du chapiteau il y avait un treillis et des grenades, le tout en bronze; il en allait de même pour la seconde colonne, aussi avec le treillis.
18. Le chef des gardes captura le grand-prêtre Seraja, le prêtre adjoint Sophonie et les trois gardiens de l'entrée.
19. Dans la ville, il captura un eunuque qui commandait aux hommes de guerre, 5 hommes qui faisaient partie des conseillers du roi et qu'on trouva dans la ville, le secrétaire du chef de l'armée chargé d'enrôler la population du pays, ainsi que 60 hommes pris parmi la population du pays qu'on trouva dans la ville.
20. Nebuzaradan, le chef des gardes, les captura et les conduisit vers le roi de Babylone à Ribla,
21. et le roi de Babylone les frappa à mort à Ribla, dans le pays de Hamath.
22. Nebucadnetsar, le roi de Babylone, plaça le reste du peuple, ceux qu'il laissa dans le pays de Juda, sous l'autorité de Guedalia, le fils d'Achikam et le petit-fils de Shaphan.
23. Lorsque tous les chefs des troupes et leurs hommes apprirent que le roi de Babylone avait établi Guedalia comme gouverneur, ils se rendirent vers Guedalia à Mitspa. C'étaient Ismaël, le fils de Nethania, Jochanan, le fils de Karéach, Seraja, le fils de Thanhumeth, de Nethopha, et Jaazania, le fils du Maacathien, ainsi que leurs hommes.
24. Guedalia leur fit un serment, à eux et à leurs hommes, et il leur dit: «N'ayez pas peur des serviteurs des Babyloniens. Installez-vous dans le pays, servez le roi de Babylone et tout se passera bien pour vous.»
25. Mais le septième mois, Ismaël, le fils de Nethania et le petit-fils d'Elishama, qui était de sang royal, vint en compagnie de 10 hommes et ils frappèrent mortellement Guedalia ainsi que les Juifs et les Babyloniens qui étaient avec lui à Mitspa.
26. Alors tout le peuple, du plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, et les chefs des troupes se levèrent et s'en allèrent en Egypte, parce qu'ils avaient peur des Babyloniens.
27. La trente-septième année de l'exil de Jojakin, roi de Juda, le vingt-septième jour du douzième mois, Evil-Merodac, le roi de Babylone, releva la tête du roi de Juda Jojakin et le fit sortir de prison. C'était la première année de son règne.
28. Il lui parla avec bonté et lui donna une place supérieure à celle des autres rois retenus avec lui à Babylone.
29. Il lui fit changer ses habits de prisonnier et Jojakin mangea à sa table tout le reste de sa vie.
30. Le roi pourvut constamment à son entretien journalier, durant tout le reste de sa vie.
