1. In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.
2. And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.
3. When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?
4. And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.
5. And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
6. And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.
7. Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
8. And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?
9. And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.
10. When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
11. And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.
12. And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.
13. And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.
14. Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
15. And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.
16. And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.
17. And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
18. And these went into Micah's house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?
19. And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
20. And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
21. So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.
22. And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.
23. And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
24. And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
25. And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.
26. And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.
27. And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
28. And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
29. And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.
30. And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
31. And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
1. A cette époque-là, il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël. La tribu des Danites cherchait un territoire où s'installer, car jusque-là elle n'avait pas reçu d'héritage au milieu des tribus d'Israël.
2. Les Danites choisirent parmi eux, dans leurs clans, cinq hommes vaillants, qu'ils envoyèrent de Tsorea et d'Eshthaol pour explorer et examiner le pays. Ils leur dirent: «Allez examiner le pays.» Ces hommes arrivèrent jusque vers la maison de Mica, dans la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm, et ils y passèrent la nuit.
3. Une fois près de la maison de Mica, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune Lévite, s'approchèrent et lui dirent: «Qui t'a amené ici? Que fais-tu dans cet endroit? Qu'est-ce qui te retient ici?»
4. Il leur répondit: «Mica fait pour moi différentes choses. Il me donne un salaire et je lui sers de prêtre.»
5. Les hommes lui dirent: «Consulte Dieu, afin que nous sachions si notre voyage aura du succès.»
6. Le prêtre leur répondit: «Allez en paix. Le voyage que vous faites se déroule sous le regard de l'Eternel.»
7. Les cinq hommes partirent et arrivèrent à Laïs. Ils virent le peuple qui s'y trouvait: il vivait en sécurité, à la manière des Sidoniens, tranquille et confiant. Il n'y avait dans le pays personne qui provoque la moindre humiliation ou exerce une domination. Ils étaient loin des Sidoniens et ils n'avaient pas de relations avec les autres.
8. Ils revinrent auprès de leurs frères, à Tsorea et Eshthaol, et ceux-ci leur demandèrent: «Quelles nouvelles rapportez-vous?»
9. «Allons-y, répondirent-ils, montons contre ces gens, car nous avons vu le pays et il est très bon. Comment! Vous restez sans rien faire! Ne faites pas preuve de paresse pour vous mettre en marche afin d'aller prendre possession de ce pays.
10. Quand vous y entrerez, vous arriverez vers un peuple qui vit sans inquiétude. Le pays est vaste et Dieu l'a livré entre vos mains. C'est un endroit où rien ne manque de tout ce qui est sur la terre.»
11. Il y eut 600 hommes du clan de Dan qui partirent de Tsorea et d'Eshthaol, munis de leurs armes de guerre.
12. Ils montèrent et campèrent à Kirjath-Jearim en Juda. C'est pourquoi cet endroit, qui se trouve derrière Kirjath-Jearim, a été appelé jusqu'à aujourd'hui Machané-Dan.
13. De là ils passèrent dans la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm et ils arrivèrent à la maison de Mica.
14. Alors les cinq hommes qui étaient allés explorer le pays de Laïs prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères: «Savez-vous qu'il y a dans ces maisons-là un éphod, des théraphim, une sculpture sacrée et une idole en métal fondu? Voyez maintenant ce que vous avez à faire.»
15. Ils s'approchèrent de là, entrèrent dans la maison du jeune Lévite, dans la maison de Mica, et lui demandèrent comment il se portait.
16. Les 600 Danites, munis de leurs armes de guerre, se tenaient à l'entrée de la porte.
17. Les cinq hommes qui étaient allés explorer le pays montèrent à l'intérieur de la maison. Ils prirent la sculpture sacrée, l'éphod, les théraphim et l'image en métal fondu pendant que le prêtre se trouvait à l'entrée de la porte avec les 600 hommes munis de leurs armes de guerre.
18. Lorsqu'ils furent entrés dans la maison de Mica et qu'ils eurent pris la sculpture sacrée, l'éphod, les théraphim et l'image en métal fondu, le prêtre leur dit: «Que faites-vous?»
19. Ils lui répondirent: «Tais-toi, mets ta main sur ta bouche et viens avec nous. Tu nous serviras de père et de prêtre. Vaut-il mieux que tu serves de prêtre à la famille d'un seul homme ou à toute une tribu et tout un clan en Israël?»
20. Le prêtre en fut tout réjoui dans son coeur. Il prit l'éphod, les théraphim et la sculpture sacrée et se joignit à la troupe.
21. Ils se remirent en route et partirent en plaçant devant eux les enfants, le bétail et les bagages.
22. Les Danites étaient déjà loin de la maison de Mica lorsque les occupants des maisons voisines de celle de Mica se rassemblèrent et se lancèrent à leur poursuite.
23. Ils appelèrent les Danites, qui se retournèrent et dirent à Mica: «Qu'as-tu et que signifie ce rassemblement?»
24. Il répondit: «Mes dieux que j'avais fabriqués, vous les avez enlevés avec le prêtre et vous êtes partis. Que me reste-t-il? Comment donc pouvez-vous me dire: 'Qu'as-tu?'»
25. Les Danites lui dirent: «Ne dis plus un mot, sinon ce sont des hommes furieux qui se jetteront sur vous, et tu provoqueras ta perte ainsi que celle de ta maison.»
26. Puis les Danites continuèrent leur route. Voyant qu'ils étaient plus forts que lui, Mica repartit et retourna chez lui.
27. Les Danites enlevèrent ainsi ce qu'avait fabriqué Mica et emmenèrent le prêtre qui était à son service. Puis ils surprirent Laïs, un peuple tranquille et sans inquiétude. Ils le passèrent au fil de l'épée et brûlèrent la ville.
28. Personne ne la délivra, car elle était située loin de Sidon et ses habitants n'avaient pas de relations avec les autres. Elle se trouvait dans la vallée qui s'étend en direction de Beth-Rehob. Les Danites reconstruisirent la ville et y habitèrent.
29. Ils l'appelèrent Dan, d'après le nom de leur ancêtre, qui était un fils d'Israël. Cependant, la ville s'appelait auparavant Laïs.
30. Ils dressèrent la sculpture sacrée pour leur usage propre et Jonathan, fils de Guershom et petit-fils de Moïse, ainsi que ses descendants, officièrent comme prêtres pour la tribu des Danites jusqu'à l'époque de la déportation des habitants du pays.
31. Ils érigèrent pour leur usage propre la sculpture sacrée qu'avait fabriquée Mica pendant toute la période où la maison de Dieu fut à Silo.
