1. Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
2. But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
3. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4. (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6. And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
7. Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.
8. For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
9. That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
10. For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
11. Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
12. For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
13. But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
14. For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
15. Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
16. To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
17. But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
18. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
1. Moi Paul, je vous adresse un appel par la douceur et la bonté de Christ, moi qui suis humble quand je suis parmi vous mais plein de hardiesse envers vous quand je suis loin:
2. je vous en prie, ne me forcez pas, lorsque je serai présent, à recourir avec hardiesse à l'assurance dont je compte faire preuve contre quelques-uns, contre ceux qui estiment que nous nous conduisons de façon purement humaine.
3. Si en effet nous vivons dans la réalité humaine, nous ne combattons pas de façon purement humaine.
4. En effet, les armes avec lesquelles nous combattons ne sont pas humaines, mais elles sont puissantes, grâce à Dieu, pour renverser des forteresses.
5. Nous renversons les raisonnements et tout obstacle qui s'élève avec orgueil contre la connaissance de Dieu, et nous faisons toute pensée prisonnière pour qu'elle obéisse à Christ.
6. Nous sommes aussi prêts à punir toute désobéissance dès que votre obéissance sera entière.
7. Regardez les choses en face! Si quelqu'un est convaincu d'appartenir à Christ, qu'il se dise bien en lui-même que, tout comme il est de Christ, nous le sommes aussi.
8. Et même si je me montre un peu trop fier de l'autorité que le Seigneur nous a donnée, pour votre édification et non pour votre ruine, je n'en aurai pas honte.
9. De fait, je ne veux pas avoir l'air de vous intimider par mes lettres.
10. En effet, «ses lettres sont sévères et fortes dit-on mais quand il est présent, il est faible et sa parole est méprisable.»
11. Que celui qui parle ainsi s'en rende bien compte: nous sommes dans nos actes, une fois présents, exactement tels que nous sommes en paroles dans nos lettres quand nous sommes absents.
12. Nous n'oserions pas nous déclarer égaux ou nous comparer à quelques-uns de ceux qui se recommandent eux-mêmes. Mais en fait, en se mesurant à leur propre mesure et en se comparant à eux-mêmes, ils manquent d'intelligence.
13. Quant à nous, nous ne voulons pas nous montrer excessivement fiers, mais seulement dans la limite du champ d'action que Dieu nous a attribué en nous faisant parvenir jusqu'à vous.
14. Nous ne dépassons pas nos limites, comme si nous n'étions pas venus jusqu'à vous; car c'est bien jusqu'à vous que nous sommes arrivés avec l'Evangile de Christ.
15. Ainsi nous ne nous vantons pas des travaux d'autrui qui sont en dehors de nos limites. Mais nous avons l'espérance, si votre foi augmente, de voir notre oeuvre grandir encore parmi vous, dans notre propre champ d'action.
16. Nous pourrons alors évangéliser les régions situées au-delà de chez vous sans nous vanter du travail déjà fait par d'autres dans leur propre champ d'action.
17. Que celui qui veut éprouver de la fierté mette sa fierté dans le Seigneur.
18. En effet, ce n'est pas celui qui se recommande lui-même qui est approuvé, c'est celui que le Seigneur recommande.
