1. Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man's pen concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
2. And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.
3. And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
4. For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
5. The LORD spake also unto me again, saying,
6. Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;
7. Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:
8. And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
9. Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.
10. Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.
11. For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,
12. Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.
13. Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
14. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15. And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
16. Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
17. And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.
18. Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.
19. And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
20. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
21. And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
22. And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.
1. L'Eternel m'a dit: «Prends un grand cylindre et écris dessus, avec un burin ordinaire: 'A Maher-Shalal-Chash-Baz.'
2. Je veux prendre pour témoins deux hommes dignes de confiance, le prêtre Urie et Zacharie, fils de Bérékia.»
3. Je me suis uni à la prophétesse; elle est tombée enceinte et a mis au monde un fils. L'Eternel m'a dit: «Appelle-le Maher-Shalal-Chash-Baz.
4. En effet, avant que l'enfant sache dire: 'Papa! Maman!' on apportera devant le roi d'Assyrie les richesses de Damas et le butin pris à Samarie.»
5. L'Eternel m'a encore parlé, il a ajouté:
6. «Puisque ce peuple a méprisé l'eau de Siloé qui coule doucement et a éprouvé de la joie en pensant à Retsin et au fils de Remalia,
7. le Seigneur va faire monter contre eux les puissantes et grandes eaux de l'Euphrate, à savoir le roi d'Assyrie et toute sa puissance. Il grossira dans tous ses canaux et débordera sur toutes ses rives;
8. il pénétrera dans Juda, le submergera et l'inondera, et ce jusqu'à la hauteur du cou. Le déploiement de ses ailes remplira tout ton territoire, Emmanuel!»
9. Poussez des cris, peuples! Mais vous serez brisés. Prêtez l'oreille, pays lointains! Préparez-vous au combat! Mais vous serez brisés. Oui, préparez-vous au combat! Mais vous serez brisés.
10. Vous aurez beau prendre des décisions, elles seront sans effet. Vous aurez beau prononcer une parole, elle ne s'accomplira pas, car Dieu est avec nous.
11. Oui, voici ce que m'a dit l'Eternel, avec toute la force de son autorité, pour m'avertir de ne pas suivre la voie qui était celle de ce peuple:
12. «N'appelez pas conspiration tout ce que ce peuple appelle conspiration! *N'ayez d'eux aucune crainte et ne soyez pas troublés!
13. C'est l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, que vous devez respecter comme saint, c'est lui que vous devez craindre et redouter.
14. Il sera alors un sanctuaire, mais aussi *une pierre qui fait obstacle, un rocher propre à faire trébucher pour les deux communautés d'Israël, un filet et un piège pour les habitants de Jérusalem.
15. Beaucoup parmi eux trébucheront; ils tomberont et se briseront, ils seront pris au piège et capturés.
16. Garde ce témoignage à l'abri, marque la loi d'un sceau parmi mes disciples!»
17. Je compte sur l'Eternel, même s'il se cache à la famille de Jacob. *Je me confie en lui.
18. Me voici, moi et les enfants que l'Eternel m'a donnés: nous servons de signes et de présages en Israël de la part de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, qui réside sur le mont Sion.
19. Si l'on vous dit: «Consultez ceux qui invoquent les esprits et les spirites, ceux qui chuchotent et murmurent! Un peuple ne consultera-t-il pas ses dieux? Ne consultera-t-il pas les morts en faveur des vivants?»
20. répondez: «Il faut revenir à la loi et au témoignage!» Si l'on ne parle pas de cette manière, il n'y aura pas d'aurore pour ce peuple.
21. Il parcourra le pays, accablé et affamé, et, quand il aura faim, il s'irritera, maudira son roi et son Dieu et tournera les yeux en haut;
22. puis il regardera vers la terre et il n'y verra que détresse, obscurité et sombres angoisses; il sera repoussé dans d'épaisses ténèbres.
23. Toutefois, les ténèbres ne régneront pas toujours sur la terre où il y a maintenant des angoisses: si les temps passés ont couvert de mépris *le territoire de Zabulon et de Nephthali, les temps à venir couvriront de gloire la région voisine de la mer, la région située de l'autre côté du Jourdain, la Galilée à la population étrangère.
