1. And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead.
2. And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.
3. And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.
4. And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
5. And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
6. And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?
7. And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.
8. And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.
9. And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.
10. And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.
11. Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.
12. And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.
13. And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon.
14. And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
15. And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet.
16. But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.
17. Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite: for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.
18. And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle.
19. And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.
20. Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.
21. Then Jael Heber's wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.
22. And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples.
23. So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.
24. And the hand of the children of Israel prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

2. L'Eternel les vendit alors à Jabin, le roi de Canaan, qui régnait à Hatsor. Le chef de son armée était Sisera et habitait à Harosheth-Goïm.
3. Les Israélites crièrent à l'Eternel, car Jabin avait 900 chars de fer et les opprimait avec violence depuis 20 ans.
4. A cette époque, Débora, une prophétesse mariée à un certain Lappidoth, était juge en Israël.
5. Elle siégeait sous le palmier de Débora, entre Rama et Béthel, dans la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm, et les Israélites montaient vers elle pour être jugés.
6. Elle fit appeler Barak, fils d'Abinoam, originaire de Kédesh-Nephthali, et elle lui dit: «L'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, t'a donné l'ordre suivant: 'Vas-y, prends la direction du mont Thabor en emmenant 10'000 hommes des tribus de Nephthali et de Zabulon.
7. J'attirerai vers toi, au torrent du Kison, Sisera, le chef de l'armée de Jabin, avec ses chars et ses troupes, et je le livrerai entre tes mains.'»
8. Barak dit à Débora: «Si tu viens avec moi, je partirai. Mais si tu ne viens pas avec moi, je ne partirai pas.»
9. Elle répondit: «J'irai donc avec toi, mais tu n'auras aucune gloire sur la voie où tu t'engages, car c'est entre les mains d'une femme que l'Eternel livrera Sisera.» Débora se leva et se rendit avec Barak à Kédesh.
10. Barak convoqua les tribus de Zabulon et Nephthali à Kédesh; 10'000 hommes marchèrent à sa suite et Débora partit avec lui.
11. Héber, le Kénien, s'était séparé des autres Kéniens qui descendaient de Hobab, le beau-frère de Moïse, et il s'était rendu jusqu'au chêne de Tsaannaïm, près de Kédesh, pour y dresser sa tente.
12. On informa Sisera que Barak, fils d'Abinoam, avait pris la direction du mont Thabor.
13. Et, depuis Harosheth-Goïm, Sisera rassembla vers le torrent du Kison tous ses chars, 900 chars en fer, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui.
14. Alors Débora dit à Barak: «Lève-toi, car voici le jour où l'Eternel livre Sisera entre tes mains. L'Eternel ne marche-t-il pas devant toi?» Barak descendit du mont Thabor, avec 10'000 hommes à sa suite.
15. L'Eternel mit en déroute Sisera, tous ses chars et tout le camp et les livra à l'épée de Barak. Sisera descendit de son char et s'enfuit à pied.
16. Barak poursuivit les chars et l'armée jusqu'à Harosheth-Goïm. Toute l'armée de Sisera tomba sous le tranchant de l'épée, sans qu'il en reste un seul homme.
17. Toujours à pied, Sisera se réfugia dans la tente de Jaël, la femme de Héber le Kénien. En effet, il y avait paix entre Jabin, le roi de Hatsor, et la famille de Héber le Kénien.
18. Jaël sortit à la rencontre de Sisera et lui dit: «Entre, mon seigneur, entre chez moi, n'aie pas peur.» Il entra chez elle dans la tente et elle le cacha sous une couverture.
19. Il lui dit: «Donne-moi, je t'en prie, un peu d'eau à boire, car j'ai soif.» Elle ouvrit l'outre du lait, lui donna à boire et le couvrit.
20. Il lui dit encore: «Tiens-toi à l'entrée de la tente et, si l'on vient te demander: 'Y a-t-il quelqu'un ici?' tu répondras: 'Non.'»
21. Jaël, la femme de Héber, s'empara d'un pieu de la tente, prit un marteau, s'approcha de lui doucement et lui enfonça le pieu dans la tempe. Il pénétra jusqu'en terre. Sisera se trouvait alors dans un état de sommeil profond, car il était accablé de fatigue, et il mourut.
22. Voici que survint Barak, qui était à la poursuite de Sisera. Jaël sortit à sa rencontre et lui dit: «Viens, je vais te montrer l'homme que tu cherches.» Il entra chez elle et vit Sisera étendu mort, le pieu dans la tempe.
23. Ce jour-là, Dieu humilia Jabin, le roi de Canaan, devant les Israélites.
24. La pression des Israélites se fit de plus en plus lourde contre Jabin, le roi de Canaan, jusqu'à son extermination.
