1. When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;
2. Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
3. Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.
4. And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;
5. As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:
6. Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
7. Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
8. And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;
9. If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
10. That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
11. But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
12. Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13. Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
14. Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
15. One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
16. If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
17. Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18. And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19. Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
20. And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
21. And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
1. »Lorsque l'Eternel, ton Dieu, aura exterminé les nations dont il te donne le pays, lorsque tu les auras chassées et que tu habiteras dans leurs villes et dans leurs maisons,
2. tu mettras 3 villes à part au milieu du pays dont l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne la possession.
3. Tu établiras des routes pour y aller et tu diviseras en 3 parties le territoire que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, va te donner en héritage. Ce sera le cas afin que tout auteur d'un homicide puisse s'enfuir dans ces villes.
4. Cette loi s'appliquera au meurtrier qui s'enfuira là pour sauver sa vie après avoir involontairement tué son prochain, sans avoir été son ennemi auparavant.
5. C'est le cas, par exemple, d'un homme qui va couper du bois dans la forêt avec un autre homme. La hache en main, il s'élance pour abattre un arbre. Le fer se détache du manche, atteint le compagnon de cet homme et lui donne la mort. Alors l'homme pourra s'enfuir dans l'une de ces villes pour sauver sa vie.
6. Cela permettra d'éviter que le vengeur du sang, échauffé par la colère et poursuivant l'auteur de l'homicide, ne finisse par l'atteindre, s'il y avait beaucoup de chemin à faire, et ne frappe mortellement un homme qui ne mérite pas la mort, puisqu'il n'était pas l'ennemi de son prochain auparavant.
7. C'est pourquoi je te donne l'ordre de mettre 3 villes à part.
8. L'Eternel, ton Dieu, va élargir tes frontières comme il l'a juré à tes ancêtres et te donner tout le pays qu'il a promis à tes ancêtres de te donner,
9. pourvu que tu respectes tous les commandements que je te prescris aujourd'hui en les mettant en pratique, en aimant l'Eternel, ton Dieu, et en marchant toujours dans ses voies. Tu ajouteras alors encore 3 villes à ces trois-là,
10. afin que le sang innocent ne soit pas versé au milieu du pays que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage et que tu ne te rendes pas coupable de meurtre.
11. »Mais si un homme s'enfuit dans une de ces villes après avoir tendu des embuscades à son prochain par haine contre lui, après l'avoir attaqué et frappé de manière à causer sa mort,
12. les anciens de sa ville le feront arrêter et le livreront entre les mains du vengeur du sang afin qu'il meure.
13. Ton regard sera sans pitié envers lui. Tu feras ainsi disparaître d'Israël le sang innocent et tu seras heureux.
14. »Tu ne reculeras pas les bornes de ton prochain, celles qu'ont posées tes ancêtres, dans l'héritage que tu auras au pays dont l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne la possession.
15. »Un seul témoin ne suffira pas contre un homme pour constater un crime ou un péché, quel qu'il soit; *un fait ne pourra être établi que sur la déposition de 2 ou de 3 témoins.
16. »Lorsqu'un faux témoin se dressera contre quelqu'un pour l'accuser d'un crime,
17. les deux hommes en contestation comparaîtront devant l'Eternel, devant les prêtres et les juges alors en fonction.
18. Les juges feront avec soin des recherches: le témoin est-il un faux témoin, a-t-il fait une fausse déposition contre son frère?
19. Alors vous le traiterez comme il avait l'intention de traiter son frère. Tu extirperas ainsi le mal du milieu de toi.
20. Les autres en entendront parler et éprouveront de la crainte, et l'on ne commettra plus un acte aussi criminel au milieu de toi.
21. Ton regard sera sans pitié: *oeil pour oeil, dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied.
