1. Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
2. And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
3. And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!
4. And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
5. And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
6. And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.
7. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
8. Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.
9. And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
10. And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
11. And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
12. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
13. This is the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.
14. And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:
15. How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
16. And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
17. Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
18. And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
19. And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
20. And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
21. Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.
22. And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.
23. And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,
24. Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.
25. Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor:
26. And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.
27. And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
28. And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
29. And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
1. Toute l'assemblée des Israélites arriva dans le désert de Tsin le premier mois et le peuple s'arrêta à Kadès. C'est là que Miriam mourut et fut enterrée.
2. Il n'y avait pas d'eau pour l'assemblée. On se souleva donc contre Moïse et Aaron.
3. Le peuple chercha querelle à Moïse. Ils dirent: «Si seulement nous avions expiré lorsque nos frères ont expiré devant l'Eternel!
4. Pourquoi avez-vous fait venir l'assemblée de l'Eternel dans ce désert? Est-ce pour que nous y mourions, nous et notre bétail?
5. Pourquoi nous avez-vous fait quitter l'Egypte, si c'est pour nous amener dans cet endroit de malheur? Ce n'est pas un endroit où l'on puisse semer et il n'y a ni figuier, ni vigne, ni grenadier ni eau à boire.»
6. Moïse et Aaron s'éloignèrent de l'assemblée pour se rendre à l'entrée de la tente de la rencontre. Ils tombèrent le visage contre terre et la gloire de l'Eternel leur apparut.
7. L'Eternel dit à Moïse:
8. «Prends le bâton et convoque l'assemblée, toi ainsi que ton frère Aaron. Vous parlerez au rocher en leur présence et il donnera son eau. Tu feras sortir pour eux de l'eau du rocher et tu feras boire l'assemblée et leur bétail.»
9. Moïse prit le bâton qui se trouvait devant l'Eternel, comme l'Eternel le lui avait ordonné.
10. Moïse et Aaron convoquèrent l'assemblée en face du rocher et Moïse leur dit: «Ecoutez donc, rebelles! Est-ce de ce rocher que nous ferons sortir de l'eau pour vous?»
11. Puis Moïse leva la main et frappa deux fois le rocher avec son bâton. Il sortit de l'eau en abondance. L'assemblée but, ainsi que le bétail.
12. Alors l'Eternel dit à Moïse et à Aaron: «Puisque vous n'avez pas eu assez confiance en moi pour respecter ma sainteté devant les Israélites, vous ne ferez pas entrer cette assemblée dans le pays que je lui donne.»
13. Ce sont les eaux de Meriba parce que les Israélites contestèrent avec l'Eternel et sa sainteté fut reconnue parmi eux.
14. De Kadès, Moïse envoya des messagers au roi d'Edom pour lui annoncer: «Voici ce que dit ton frère Israël: Tu sais toutes les souffrances que nous avons éprouvées.
15. Nos ancêtres sont descendus en Egypte et nous y avons habité longtemps. Mais les Egyptiens nous ont maltraités, nos ancêtres et nous.
16. Nous avons crié à l'Eternel et il nous a entendus. Il a envoyé un ange et nous a fait sortir de l'Egypte. Nous nous trouvons à Kadès, ville située à l'extrémité de ton territoire.
17. Laisse-nous passer par ton pays. Nous ne traverserons ni les champs ni les vignes et nous ne boirons pas l'eau des puits. Nous suivrons la route royale, sans nous en écarter à droite ou à gauche, jusqu'à ce que nous ayons franchi ton territoire.»
18. Edom lui dit: «Tu ne passeras pas chez moi, sinon je sortirai à ta rencontre avec l'épée.»
19. Les Israélites lui dirent: «Nous monterons par la grande route et, si nous buvons de ton eau, mes troupeaux et moi, j'en paierai le prix. Je ne ferai que passer avec mes pieds, rien d'autre.»
20. Edom répondit: «Tu ne passeras pas!» et il sortit à sa rencontre avec un peuple nombreux et puissamment armé.
21. Ainsi Edom refusa d'accorder à Israël l'autorisation de passer par son territoire et Israël fit un détour.
22. Toute l'assemblée des Israélites partit de Kadès et arriva au mont Hor.
23. L'Eternel dit à Moïse et à Aaron vers le mont Hor, sur la frontière du pays d'Edom:
24. «Aaron va rejoindre les siens. En effet, il n'entrera pas dans le pays que je donne aux Israélites parce que vous vous êtes rebellés contre mon ordre, aux eaux de Meriba.
25. Prends Aaron et son fils Eléazar, et fais-les monter sur le mont Hor.
26. Retire à Aaron ses vêtements et mets-les à son fils Eléazar. C'est là qu'Aaron s'en ira et mourra.»
27. Moïse fit ce que l'Eternel avait ordonné. Ils montèrent sur le mont Hor sous les yeux de toute l'assemblée.
28. Moïse retira à Aaron ses vêtements et les mit à son fils Eléazar. Aaron mourut là, au sommet de la montagne, puis Moïse et Eléazar descendirent de la montagne.
29. Toute l'assemblée vit qu'Aaron avait expiré, et toute la communauté d'Israël pleura Aaron pendant 30 jours.
