1. So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
2. And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:
3. For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
4. And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
5. Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
6. And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
7. Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.
8. And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
9. And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
10. Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
11. And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.
12. So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
13. And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.
14. And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.
15. They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
1. Asa fit ce qui est bien et droit aux yeux de l'Eternel, son Dieu.
2. Il fit disparaître les autels des dieux étrangers et les hauts lieux, il brisa les statues et abattit les poteaux sacrés.
3. Il ordonna à Juda de rechercher l'Eternel, le Dieu de ses ancêtres, et de mettre en pratique la loi et les commandements.
4. Il fit disparaître de toutes les villes de Juda les hauts lieux et les piliers consacrés au soleil. Et le royaume fut tranquille sous son règne.
5. Il put construire des villes fortifiées en Juda, car le pays fut en paix et il n'y eut pas de guerre contre lui pendant ces années-là. En effet, l'Eternel lui avait donné du repos.
6. Il dit à Juda: «Construisons ces villes et entourons-les de murailles, de tours, de portes et de verrous. Si le pays est encore à notre disposition, c'est parce que nous avons recherché l'Eternel, notre Dieu. Nous l'avons recherché et il nous a donné du repos de tous les côtés.» Ils se mirent donc à construire et ils eurent du succès.
7. Asa disposait d'une armée composée de 300'000 hommes de Juda capables de manier le bouclier et la lance, et de 280'000 hommes de Benjamin capables de manier le bouclier et de tirer à l'arc. C'étaient tous de vaillants guerriers.
8. Zérach l'Ethiopien se mit en campagne pour les attaquer avec une armée d'un million d'hommes et 300 chars, et il atteignit Marésha.
9. Asa marcha à sa rencontre et ils se rangèrent en ordre de bataille dans la vallée de Tsephata, près de Marésha.
10. Asa fit appel à l'Eternel, son Dieu, et dit: «Eternel, toi seul peux secourir celui qui a beaucoup de force comme celui qui n'en a pas. Viens à notre aide, Eternel, notre Dieu, car c'est sur toi que nous nous appuyons et c'est en ton nom que nous sommes venus contre cette foule. Eternel, tu es notre Dieu. Ne laisse pas un homme l'emporter sur toi!»
11. L'Eternel frappa les Ethiopiens sous les yeux d'Asa et de Juda, et les Ethiopiens prirent la fuite.
12. Asa et le peuple qui était avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu'à Guérar et les Ethiopiens tombèrent sans aucun moyen de sauver leur vie, car ils furent détruits par l'Eternel et par son armée. Asa et son peuple firent un très grand butin.
13. Ils conquirent toutes les villes des environs de Guérar, car la terreur de l'Eternel s'était emparée d'elles, et ils les pillèrent toutes, car elles contenaient un butin considérable.
14. Ils frappèrent aussi les campements destinés aux troupeaux et ils emmenèrent une grande quantité de brebis et de chameaux. Puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.
