1. Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.
2. Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
3. And David's men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
4. Then David inquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
5. So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6. And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.
7. And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars.
8. And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
9. And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.
10. Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
11. Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down.
12. Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.
13. Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he forbare to go forth.
14. And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
15. And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.
16. And Jonathan Saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
17. And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.
18. And they two made a covenant before the LORD: and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
19. Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?
20. Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king's hand.
21. And Saul said, Blessed be ye of the LORD; for ye have compassion on me.
22. Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very subtilly.
23. See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
24. And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon.
25. Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
26. And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
27. But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come; for the Philistines have invaded the land.
28. Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
29. And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at En-gedi.
1. On vint dire à David: «Les Philistins ont attaqué Keïla et pillent les aires de battage.»
2. David consulta l'Eternel en disant: «Dois-je y aller? Est-ce que je battrai ces Philistins?» L'Eternel lui répondit: «Vas-y, tu battras les Philistins et tu délivreras Keïla.»
3. Mais les hommes de David lui dirent: «Nous vivons dans la peur ici même en Juda. Que se passera-t-il si nous allons à Keïla pour combattre les troupes des Philistins?»
4. David consulta de nouveau l'Eternel, et l'Eternel lui répondit: «Lève-toi, descends à Keïla, car je livre les Philistins entre tes mains.»
5. David alla donc avec ses hommes à Keïla et il se battit contre les Philistins. Il emmena leur bétail et leur infligea une grande défaite. C'est ainsi que David délivra les habitants de Keïla.
6. Lorsque Abiathar, le fils d'Achimélec, s'était réfugié auprès de David à Keïla, il avait apporté l'éphod avec lui.
7. Saül fut informé de l'arrivée de David à Keïla et il se dit: «Dieu le livre entre mes mains, car il est venu s'enfermer dans une ville munie de portes et de verrous.»
8. Saül convoqua donc tout le peuple à la guerre afin de descendre à Keïla et d'assiéger David et ses hommes.
9. David eut connaissance du mauvais projet de Saül contre lui. Il dit au prêtre Abiathar: «Apporte l'éphod!»
10. Puis David dit: «Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, moi, ton serviteur, j'apprends que Saül veut venir à Keïla pour détruire cette ville à cause de moi.
11. Les habitants de Keïla me livreront-ils entre ses mains? Saül descendra-t-il, conformément à ce que ton serviteur a appris? Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, veuille le révéler à ton serviteur!» L'Eternel répondit: «Il descendra.»
12. David répéta: «Les habitants de Keïla me livreront-ils, ainsi que mes hommes, entre les mains de Saül?» Et l'Eternel répondit: «Ils te livreront entre ses mains.»
13. Alors David se leva avec ses hommes au nombre d'environ 600; ils sortirent de Keïla et s'en allèrent où ils purent. Informé que David s'était sauvé de Keïla, Saül renonça à son expédition.
14. David habita dans le désert, dans des endroits escarpés, et il resta sur la montagne dans le désert de Ziph. Saül le cherchait toujours, mais Dieu ne le livra pas entre ses mains.
15. Voyant que Saül partait en campagne pour attenter à sa vie, David restait dans le désert de Ziph, dans la forêt.
16. Ce fut alors que Jonathan, fils de Saül, se leva pour aller trouver David dans la forêt. Il fortifia sa confiance en Dieu
17. et lui dit: «N'aie pas peur, car mon père Saül ne parviendra pas à t'attraper. Tu régneras sur Israël et moi, je serai ton bras droit. Mon père Saül le sait bien aussi.»
18. Ils firent tous deux alliance devant l'Eternel. David resta dans la forêt et Jonathan retourna chez lui.
19. Les Ziphiens montèrent vers Saül à Guibea et dirent: «David n'est-il pas caché chez nous dans les endroits escarpés, dans la forêt, sur la colline de Hakila qui se trouve au sud du désert?
20. Descends donc, roi, si c'est ce que tu désires. C'est à nous qu'il reviendra de le livrer entre les mains du roi.»
21. Saül dit: «Que l'Eternel vous bénisse pour avoir eu pitié de moi!
22. Allez donc prendre encore des informations pour bien examiner et savoir où il se tient et qui l'y a vu, car il est très rusé, à ce qu'on m'a dit.
23. Voyez et reconnaissez tous les endroits où il se cache, puis revenez vers moi avec des renseignements certains, et je partirai avec vous. S'il est dans le pays, je le chercherai parmi tous les milliers de Juda.»
24. Ils se levèrent donc et retournèrent à Ziph avant Saül. David et ses hommes se trouvaient dans le désert de Maon, dans la plaine située au sud de ce désert.
25. Saül partit avec ses hommes à la recherche de David. On en informa David, qui descendit dans un endroit rocheux, dans le désert de Maon. L'ayant appris, Saül poursuivit David au désert de Maon.
26. Saül marchait d'un côté de la montagne, David et ses hommes de l'autre côté. David se dépêchait pour échapper à Saül. Cependant, déjà Saül et ses hommes l'encerclaient, ainsi que les siens, pour s'emparer d'eux
27. lorsqu'un messager vint dire à Saül: «Viens vite, car les Philistins ont lancé une attaque contre le pays.»
28. Saül cessa de poursuivre David et repartit pour aller combattre les Philistins. C'est pourquoi l'on appela cet endroit Séla-Hammachlekoth.
