1. Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
2. I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
3. Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
4. Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
5. Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
6. Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
7. For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
8. There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
9. All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
10. And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
11. Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
12. Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
13. But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
14. There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
15. Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
16. When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
17. Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
1. Qui est comme le sage et sait expliquer les choses? La sagesse d'un homme fait briller son visage et la sévérité de son visage en est transformée.
2. Je te le dis, respecte les ordres du roi, et cela à cause du serment fait à Dieu.
3. Ne sois pas pressé de t'éloigner de lui et ne persévère pas dans une mauvaise situation! En effet, le roi peut faire tout ce qu'il désire,
4. parce que sa parole est puissante. Qui pourra lui dire: «Que fais-tu?»
5. Celui qui respecte le commandement ne se retrouvera pas dans une mauvaise situation, et le coeur du sage connaît le moment opportun et les règles à suivre.
6. Oui, pour toute activité il y a un moment opportun et des règles, mais il y a un malheur qui accable l'homme:
7. il ne sait pas ce qui arrivera. Et qui lui annoncera comment cela arrivera?
8. L'homme n'est pas maître de son souffle pour pouvoir le retenir, et il n'exerce aucun contrôle sur le jour de sa mort. Il n'existe aucun moyen d'échapper à ce combat; même la méchanceté est incapable d'en délivrer son maître.
9. Tout cela, je l'ai vu et j'ai prêté attention à tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil. C'est un temps où l'homme domine sur l'homme pour le rendre malheureux.
10. Ainsi, j'ai vu des méchants être enterrés et entrer dans leur repos tandis que ceux qui avaient agi avec droiture devaient s'éloigner du lieu saint et étaient oubliés dans la ville. Cela aussi, c'est de la fumée.
11. Parce qu'une sentence contre de mauvaises actions n'est pas rapidement appliquée, le coeur des humains se remplit du désir de faire le mal.
12. En effet, le pécheur peut faire 100 fois le mal et continuer à vivre. Mais je sais aussi que le bonheur est pour ceux qui craignent Dieu parce qu'ils éprouvent de la crainte devant lui,
13. et qu'il ne sera pas pour le méchant: il ne prolongera pas plus son existence que l'ombre, parce qu'il n'éprouve pas de crainte devant Dieu.
14. Il y a une réalité qui n'est que fumée et qui se produit sur la terre: il y a des justes qui sont traités d'après la manière d'agir des méchants et des méchants qui sont traités d'après la manière d'agir des justes. Je dis que cela aussi, c'est de la fumée.
15. J'ai donc fait l'éloge de la joie, puisque le seul bonheur de l'homme sous le soleil consiste à manger, à boire et à se réjouir; voilà ce qui l'accompagne dans sa peine, durant la vie que Dieu lui donne sous le soleil.
16. Lorsque j'ai appliqué mon coeur à connaître la sagesse et à examiner les activités qui se déroulent sur la terre en effet, les yeux de l'homme ne goûtent le sommeil ni le jour ni la nuit
17. j'ai vu tout ce que Dieu fait. J'ai vu que l'homme ne peut pas comprendre l'oeuvre qui est accomplie sous le soleil. Il a beau se fatiguer à chercher, il n'y parvient pas, et même si un sage prétend avoir cette connaissance, il est incapable d'y parvenir.
