1. It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
2. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
3. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
4. How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
5. Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.
6. For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
7. And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
11. I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.
12. Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
13. For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong.
14. Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you: for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.
15. And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.
16. But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile.
17. Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you?
18. I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
19. Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.
20. For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
21. And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.
1. Certes il ne m'est pas convenable de me glorifier : car je viendrai jusqu'aux visions et aux révélations du Seigneur.
2. Je connais un homme en Christ il y a quatorze ans passés, (si ce fut en corps je ne sais; si ce fut hors du corps, je ne sais; Dieu le sait), qui a été ravi jusques au troisième Ciel.
3. Et je sais qu'un tel homme (si ce fut en corps, ou si ce fut hors du corps, je ne sais; Dieu le sait),
4. A été ravi en paradis, et a ouï des secrets qu'il n'est pas permis à l'homme de révéler.
5. Je ne me glorifierai point d'un tel homme, mais je ne me glorifierai point de moi-même, sinon dans mes infirmités.
6. Or quand je voudrais me glorifier, je ne serais point imprudent, car je dirais la vérité; mais je m'en abstiens, afin que personne ne m'estime au-dessus de ce qu'il me voit être, ou de ce qu'il entend dire de moi.
7. Mais de peur que je ne m'élevasse à cause de l'excellence des révélations, il m'a été mis une écharde en la chair, un ange de satan pour me souffleter, [ça été, dis-je], afin que je ne m'élevasse point.
8. C'est pourquoi j'ai prié trois fois le Seigneur, de faire que [cet ange de satan] se retirât de moi.
9. Mais [le Seigneur] m'a dit : ma grâce te suffit : car ma vertu manifeste sa force dans l'infirmité. Je me glorifierai donc très volontiers plutôt dans mes infirmités; afin que la vertu de Christ habite en moi.
10. Et à cause de cela je prends plaisir dans les infirmités, dans les injures, dans les nécessités, dans les persécutions, et dans les angoisses pour Christ : car quand je suis faible, c'est alors que je suis fort.
11. J'ai été imprudent en me glorifiant; [mais] vous m'y avez contraint, car je devais être recommandé par vous, vu que je n'ai été moindre en aucune chose que les plus excellents Apôtres, quoique je ne sois rien.
12. Certainement les marques de mon Apostolat ont été efficaces parmi vous avec toute patience, par des signes, des prodiges et des miracles.
13. Car en quoi avez-vous été inférieurs aux autres Églises, sinon en ce que je ne suis point devenu lâche au travail à votre préjudice? Pardonnez-moi ce tort.
14. Voici pour la troisième fois que je suis prêt d'aller vers vous; et je ne m'épargnerai pas à travailler, pour ne vous être point à charge; car je ne demande pas votre bien, mais c'est vous-mêmes [que je demande]; aussi ce ne sont pas les enfants qui doivent faire amas pour leurs pères, mais les pères pour leurs enfants.
15. Et quant à moi, je dépenserai très volontiers, et je serai même dépensé pour vos âmes; bien que vous aimant beaucoup plus, je sois moins aimé.
16. Mais soit, [dira-t-on], que je ne vous aie point été à charge, mais qu'étant rusé, je vous aie pris par finesse.
17. Ai-je donc fait mon profit de vous par aucun de ceux que je vous ai envoyés?
18. J'ai prié Tite, et j'ai envoyé un [de nos] frères avec lui; [mais] Tite a-t-il fait son profit de vous? Et n'avons-nous pas [lui et moi] marché d'un même esprit? N'[avons-nous pas marché] sur les mêmes traces?
19. Avez-vous encore la pensée que nous voulions nous justifier envers vous? Nous parlons devant Dieu en Christ, et le tout, ô très chers! est pour votre édification.
20. Car je crains qu'il n'arrive que quand je viendrai, je ne vous trouve point tels que je voudrais, et que je sois trouvé de vous tel que vous ne voudriez pas, et qu'il n'y ait en quelque sorte [parmi vous] des querelles, des envies, des colères, des débats, des médisances, des murmures, des enflures d'orgueil, des désordres et des séditions.
21. Et qu'étant revenu [chez vous], mon Dieu ne m'humilie sur votre sujet, en sorte que je sois affligé à l'occasion de plusieurs de ceux qui ont péché auparavant, et qui ne se sont point repentis de l'impureté, de la fornication, et de l'impudicité dont ils se sont rendus coupables.
