1. And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.
2. If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
3. Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it.
4. And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
5. My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.
6. The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.
7. For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
8. But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
9. Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
10. Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?
11. Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.
12. The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts.
13. And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.
14. Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
15. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
16. For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
17. Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
1. Maintenant, prêtres, ce commandement est pour vous!
2. Si vous n'écoutez pas, si vous ne prenez pas à coeur de donner gloire à mon nom, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, j'enverrai parmi vous la malédiction et je maudirai vos bénédictions. Oui, je les maudirai, parce que vous ne prenez pas cela à coeur.
3. Me voici, je menace votre descendance et je vous jetterai des excréments au visage, les excréments des victimes que vous sacrifiez, et on vous emportera avec eux.
4. Vous saurez alors que je vous ai adressé ce commandement afin que mon alliance avec Lévi subsiste, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.
5. Mon alliance avec lui était une alliance de vie et de paix; je les lui ai données pour qu'il me craigne, et il a eu pour moi de la crainte, il a tremblé devant mon nom.
6. La loi de vérité était dans sa bouche, on ne trouvait pas d'injustice sur ses lèvres. Il a marché avec moi dans la paix et dans la droiture, et il a détourné beaucoup d'hommes du mal.
7. En effet, les lèvres du prêtre sont les gardiennes de la connaissance, c'est à sa bouche qu'on demande la loi, parce qu'il est un messager de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.
8. Mais vous, vous vous êtes écartés de cette voie, vous en avez fait trébucher beaucoup par le moyen de la loi, vous avez violé l'alliance de Lévi, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.
9. Et moi, je vous livrerai au mépris et à l'humiliation aux yeux de tout le peuple parce que vous n'avez pas gardé mes voies et que vous faites preuve de partialité dans l'application de la loi.
10. N'avons-nous pas tous un seul père? N'est-ce pas un seul Dieu qui nous a créés? Pourquoi donc sommes-nous infidèles l'un envers l'autre en violant l'alliance de nos ancêtres?
11. Juda s'est montré infidèle, et l'on a commis un acte abominable en Israël et à Jérusalem. En effet, Juda a profané ce qui est consacré à l'Eternel, ce qu'aime l'Eternel: il a épousé la fille d'un dieu étranger.
12. Si quelqu'un agit de cette manière, l'Eternel supprimera des tentes de Jacob celui qui veille, celui qui répond et celui qui présente une offrande à l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.
13. Voici une deuxième chose que vous faites: vous couvrez l'autel de l'Eternel de larmes, de pleurs et de gémissements, de sorte qu'il ne prête plus attention aux offrandes et qu'il ne peut rien accepter de vos mains,
14. et vous dites: «Pourquoi?» Parce que l'Eternel a été témoin entre toi et la femme de ta jeunesse, que tu as trahie. Et pourtant, elle était ta compagne et la femme avec laquelle tu étais lié par une alliance.
15. Personne n'a fait cela, avec un reste de bon sens. Un seul l'a fait, et pourquoi? Parce qu'il recherchait la descendance que Dieu lui avait promise. Veillez sur votre esprit: que personne ne trahisse la femme de sa jeunesse,
16. car je déteste le divorce, dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, et celui qui couvre son habit de violence, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. Veillez sur votre esprit et ne commettez pas cette trahison!
17. Vous fatiguez l'Eternel par vos paroles et vous dites: «En quoi l'avons-nous fatigué?» C'est en disant: «L'Eternel voit d'un bon oeil celui qui fait le mal, c'est en lui qu'il prend plaisir», ou encore: «Où est le Dieu de la justice?»
