1. The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,
2. What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?
3. As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.
4. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
5. But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,
6. And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,
7. And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;
8. He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,
9. Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
10. If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,
11. And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,
12. Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,
13. Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
14. Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,
15. That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,
16. Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,
17. That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
18. As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.
19. Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
20. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
21. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
22. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
23. Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
24. But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.
25. Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
26. When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.
27. Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
28. Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
29. Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?
30. Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
31. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
32. For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
1. La parole de l'Eternel m'a été adressée:
2. «Pourquoi dites-vous ce proverbe, dans le territoire d'Israël: 'Ce sont les pères qui mangent des raisins verts et ce sont les enfants qui ont mal aux dents'?
3. Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, déclare le Seigneur, l'Eternel, vous n'aurez plus l'occasion de dire ce proverbe en Israël.
4. En effet, toutes les vies m'appartiennent; la vie du fils m'appartient aussi bien que celle du père. Celui qui pèche, c'est celui qui mourra.
5. »L'homme qui est juste, c'est celui qui applique le droit et la justice.
6. Il ne mange pas sur les montagnes et ne lève pas les yeux vers les idoles de la communauté d'Israël. Il ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain et ne s'approche pas d'une femme pendant ses règles.
7. Il n'exploite personne, il rend son gage au débiteur, il ne commet pas d'extorsion. Il donne son pain à celui qui a faim et couvre d'un habit celui qui est nu.
8. Il ne prête pas avec intérêt et ne cherche pas à faire du profit. Il ne prend part à aucune injustice et juge conformément à la vérité entre deux hommes.
9. Il suit mes prescriptions et respecte mes règles en agissant conformément à la vérité. Celui-là est juste, et il vivra, déclare le Seigneur, l'Eternel.
10. »Supposons qu'il ait un fils violent, qui verse le sang et s'en prenne à son prochain.
11. Ce fils n'imite en rien la conduite de son père mais va jusqu'à manger sur les montagnes; il déshonore la femme de son prochain,
12. exploite le malheureux et le pauvre, commet des extorsions, ne rend pas le gage, lève les yeux vers les idoles et s'adonne à des pratiques abominables;
13. il prête avec intérêt et cherche à faire du profit. Ce fils-là vivrait? Il ne vivra pas. Puisqu'il a commis tous ces actes abominables, il mourra. Son sang retombera sur lui.
14. »Supposons en revanche qu'un homme ait un fils qui voie tous les péchés commis par son père. Il les voit mais refuse d'agir de la même manière:
15. il ne mange pas sur les montagnes et ne lève pas les yeux vers les idoles de la communauté d'Israël; il ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain;
16. il n'exploite personne, ne prend pas de gage, ne commet pas d'extorsion; il donne son pain à celui qui a faim et couvre d'un habit celui qui est nu;
17. il ne s'en prend pas au malheureux, il n'exige pas d'intérêt et ne cherche pas à faire du profit; il respecte mes règles et suit mes prescriptions. Celui-là ne mourra pas à cause des fautes commises par son père, il vivra.
18. C'est son père qui a exploité les autres, qui a commis des extorsions envers un frère, qui a fait au milieu de son peuple ce qui n'est pas bien. C'est donc lui qui mourra à cause de ses propres fautes.
19. »Vous dites: 'Pourquoi le fils ne supporte-t-il pas les conséquences de la faute commise par son père?' C'est que le fils a appliqué le droit et la justice, c'est qu'il a respecté et mis en pratique toutes mes prescriptions. Il vivra.
20. Celui qui pèche, c'est celui qui mourra. Le fils ne supportera pas les conséquences de la faute commise par son père, et le père ne supportera pas les conséquences de la faute commise par son fils. Le juste sera préservé à cause de sa justice, et le méchant sera condamné à cause de sa méchanceté.
21. »Si le méchant renonce à tous les péchés qu'il a commis, s'il respecte toutes mes prescriptions et applique le droit et la justice, il vivra, il ne mourra pas.
22. Toutes les transgressions qu'il a commises seront oubliées. Il vivra grâce à la justice qu'il a pratiquée.
23. Est-ce que je prends plaisir à voir le méchant mourir? déclare le Seigneur, l'Eternel. N'est-ce pas plutôt à le voir changer de conduite et vivre?
24. »Si le juste renonce à sa justice et se met à commettre l'injustice, s'il imite toutes les pratiques abominables du méchant, vivra-t-il? Tous ses actes de justice seront oubliés parce qu'il s'est livré à l'infidélité et au péché. A cause de cela, il mourra.
25. »Vous dites: 'La manière d'agir du Seigneur n'est pas correcte.' Ecoutez donc, communauté d'Israël! Est-ce que c'est ma manière d'agir qui n'est pas correcte? Ne seraient-ce pas plutôt vos façons d'agir qui ne sont pas correctes?
26. Si le juste renonce à sa justice, s'il se met à commettre l'injustice et meurt pour cela, c'est à cause de ses actes d'injustice qu'il mourra.
27. Si le méchant renonce à ses actes de méchanceté, s'il se met à appliquer le droit et la justice, il sauvera sa vie.
28. S'il ouvre les yeux et renonce à toutes les transgressions qu'il a commises, il vivra, il ne mourra pas.
29. »La communauté d'Israël dit: 'La manière d'agir du Seigneur n'est pas correcte.' Est-ce que ce sont mes façons d'agir qui ne sont pas correctes, communauté d'Israël? Ne seraient-ce pas plutôt vos façons d'agir qui ne sont pas correctes?
30. C'est pourquoi je vous jugerai chacun en fonction de sa conduite, communauté d'Israël, déclare le Seigneur, l'Eternel. Revenez à moi et détournez-vous de toutes vos transgressions, afin que vos fautes ne causent pas votre perte!
31. Débarrassez-vous de toutes les transgressions que vous avez commises! Faites-vous un coeur nouveau et un esprit nouveau! Pourquoi devriez-vous mourir, communauté d'Israël?
32. En effet, je ne prends pas plaisir à voir mourir quelqu'un, déclare le Seigneur, l'Eternel. Changez donc d'attitude et vivez!
