1. And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel.
2. For the king had taken counsel, and his princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, to keep the passover in the second month.
3. For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.
4. And the thing pleased the king and all the congregation.
5. So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-sheba even to Dan, that they should come to keep the passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.
6. So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
7. And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to desolation, as ye see.
8. Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.
9. For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.
10. So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them.
11. Nevertheless divers of Asher and Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves, and came to Jerusalem.
12. Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.
13. And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation.
14. And they arose and took away the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense took they away, and cast them into the brook Kidron.
15. Then they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the second month: and the priests and the Levites were ashamed, and sanctified themselves, and brought in the burnt offerings into the house of the LORD.
16. And they stood in their place after their manner, according to the law of Moses the man of God: the priests sprinkled the blood, which they received of the hand of the Levites.
17. For there were many in the congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one that was not clean, to sanctify them unto the LORD.
18. For a multitude of the people, even many of Ephraim, and Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet did they eat the passover otherwise than it was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, The good LORD pardon every one
19. That prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.
20. And the LORD hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people.
21. And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the LORD.
22. And Hezekiah spake comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.
23. And the whole assembly took counsel to keep other seven days: and they kept other seven days with gladness.
24. For Hezekiah king of Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks and seven thousand sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks and ten thousand sheep: and a great number of priests sanctified themselves.
25. And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation that came out of Israel, and the strangers that came out of the land of Israel, and that dwelt in Judah, rejoiced.
26. So there was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem.
27. Then the priests the Levites arose and blessed the people: and their voice was heard, and their prayer came up to his holy dwelling place, even unto heaven.
1. Ezéchias envoya des messagers dans tout Israël et Juda, et il écrivit aussi des lettres à Ephraïm et à Manassé pour qu'ils viennent à la maison de l'Eternel à Jérusalem célébrer la Pâque en l'honneur de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
2. Le roi, ses chefs et toute l'assemblée avaient tenu conseil à Jérusalem afin que la Pâque soit célébrée au cours du deuxième mois.
3. En effet, on n'avait pas pu le faire au moment voulu parce que les prêtres ne s'étaient pas consacrés en assez grand nombre et que le peuple n'était pas rassemblé à Jérusalem.
4. Cette proposition eut l'approbation du roi et de toute l'assemblée,
5. et ils décidèrent de faire une proclamation dans tout Israël, depuis Beer-Shéba jusqu'à Dan, pour que l'on vienne à Jérusalem célébrer la Pâque en l'honneur de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël. En effet, depuis longtemps on ne la célébrait plus comme cela est prescrit.
6. Les coureurs parcoururent tout Israël et Juda avec les lettres du roi et de ses chefs et, conformément à l'ordre du roi, ils dirent: «Israélites, revenez à l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël, afin qu'il revienne à vous, rescapés de l'intervention des rois d'Assyrie.
7. Ne soyez pas comme vos pères et vos frères! Ils ont fait preuve d'infidélité envers l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, et il les a livrés à la dévastation, comme vous le voyez.
8. Ne vous montrez donc pas réfractaires comme l'étaient vos pères! Engagez-vous envers l'Eternel, venez à son sanctuaire, qu'il a consacré pour toujours, et servez l'Eternel, votre Dieu, pour que son ardente colère se détourne de vous.
9. Si vous revenez à l'Eternel, vos frères et vos fils seront l'objet de la compassion de ceux qui les ont déportés et ils reviendront dans ce pays. En effet, l'Eternel, votre Dieu, fait grâce et est rempli de compassion, et il ne se détournera pas de vous si vous revenez à lui.»
10. Les coureurs allèrent ainsi de ville en ville dans le pays d'Ephraïm et de Manassé et jusqu'à Zabulon, mais on riait et se moquait d'eux.
11. Cependant, quelques hommes issus d'Aser, de Manassé et de Zabulon s'humilièrent et vinrent à Jérusalem.
12. Dans Juda aussi, Dieu intervint pour qu'ils soient unanimes à respecter l'ordre du roi et des chefs, suivant la parole de l'Eternel.
13. Une population nombreuse se réunit à Jérusalem pour célébrer la fête des pains sans levain au cours du deuxième mois. Ce fut une immense assemblée.
14. Ils se levèrent, enlevèrent les autels sur lesquels on offrait des sacrifices dans Jérusalem ainsi que tous ceux sur lesquels on brûlait des parfums et les jetèrent dans le torrent du Cédron.
15. Ils firent ensuite les sacrifices de la Pâque le quatorzième jour du deuxième mois. Remplis de honte, les prêtres et les Lévites s'étaient consacrés, et ils offrirent des holocaustes dans la maison de l'Eternel.
16. Ils se tenaient au poste qui leur avait été attribué, conformément à la loi de Moïse, l'homme de Dieu. Les prêtres faisaient l'aspersion du sang qu'ils recevaient des Lévites.
17. Comme il y avait dans l'assemblée beaucoup de personnes qui ne s'étaient pas consacrées, les Lévites se chargèrent de sacrifier l'agneau pascal pour tous ceux qui n'étaient pas purs afin de les consacrer à l'Eternel.
18. En effet, une grande partie des membres du peuple, et en particulier ceux d'Ephraïm, de Manassé, d'Issacar et de Zabulon, ne s'étaient pas purifiés et ils mangèrent le repas de la Pâque sans se conformer à ce qui est écrit. Mais Ezéchias pria pour eux en disant: «Veuille l'Eternel, qui est bon, pardonner à
19. tous ceux qui ont appliqué leur coeur à rechercher Dieu, l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, même s'ils n'ont pas pratiqué la sainte purification!»
20. L'Eternel exauça Ezéchias et il épargna le peuple.
21. Ainsi, les Israélites qui se trouvaient à Jérusalem célébrèrent la fête des pains sans levain pendant 7 jours, avec une grande joie. Chaque jour les Lévites et les prêtres louaient l'Eternel avec les instruments qui retentissaient en son honneur.
22. Ezéchias toucha, par ses paroles, le coeur de tous les Lévites qui montraient une grande perspicacité pour le service de l'Eternel. Ils mangèrent de ce repas de fête pendant 7 jours en offrant des sacrifices de communion et en louant l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres.
23. Toute l'assemblée décida de célébrer 7 autres jours, et ils célébrèrent ces 7 jours dans la joie.
24. En effet, Ezéchias, le roi de Juda, avait donné à l'assemblée 1000 taureaux et 7000 brebis, et les chefs 1000 taureaux et 10'000 brebis. De plus, un grand nombre de prêtres s'étaient consacrés.
25. Toute l'assemblée de Juda, les prêtres, les Lévites, tous les membres du peuple venus d'Israël et les étrangers, qu'ils soient venus du territoire d'Israël ou installés en Juda, se réjouirent.
26. Il y eut une grande joie à Jérusalem, car depuis le règne de Salomon, fils de David, sur Israël, on n'avait rien vu de pareil à Jérusalem.
27. Les prêtres lévites se levèrent pour bénir le peuple et leur voix fut entendue, leur prière parvint jusqu'à la sainte demeure de l'Eternel, jusqu'au ciel.
