1. Then David said, This is the house of the LORD God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel.
2. And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God.
3. And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight;
4. Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David.
5. And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.
6. Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel.
7. And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God:
8. But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.
9. Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.
10. He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.
11. Now, my son, the LORD be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the LORD thy God, as he hath said of thee.
12. Only the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God.
13. Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed.
14. Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of brass and iron without weight; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and thou mayest add thereto.
15. Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work.
16. Of the gold, the silver, and the brass, and the iron, there is no number. Arise therefore, and be doing, and the LORD be with thee.
17. David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,
18. Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people.
19. Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD.
1. David dit: «C'est ici que sera la maison de l'Eternel Dieu, c'est ici que sera l'autel des holocaustes pour Israël.»
2. Il fit rassembler les étrangers qui se trouvaient dans le pays d'Israël et il chargea des tailleurs de pierres de préparer des pierres de taille pour la construction de la maison de Dieu.
3. Il prépara aussi beaucoup de fer pour les clous des battants des portes et pour les crochets, du bronze en quantité telle qu'il n'était pas possible de le peser
4. et une quantité incalculable de cèdre. En effet, les Sidoniens et les Tyriens avaient amené beaucoup de cèdre à David.
5. David se disait: «Mon fils Salomon est jeune et faible, et la maison qu'il s'agit de construire pour l'Eternel doit élever bien haut son nom et sa gloire dans tous les pays. C'est pourquoi je veux faire des préparatifs pour lui.» Ainsi, David fit beaucoup de préparatifs avant sa mort.
6. David appela son fils Salomon et lui ordonna de construire une maison pour l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.
7. Il dit à Salomon: «Mon fils, j'avais l'intention de construire une maison pour l'Eternel, mon Dieu,
8. mais la parole de l'Eternel m'a été adressée: 'Tu as versé beaucoup de sang et tu as mené de grandes guerres. Tu ne pourras pas construire une maison en mon honneur, car tu as versé beaucoup de sang devant moi sur la terre.
9. Tu auras un fils qui sera un homme de repos et à qui je donnerai du repos en le délivrant de tous les ennemis qui l'environneront: Salomon, voilà son nom, et je ferai venir la paix et la tranquillité sur Israël pendant sa vie.
10. Ce sera lui qui construira une maison pour mon nom. Il sera pour moi un fils et je serai pour lui un père, et j'affermirai pour toujours le trône de son royaume en Israël.'
11. »Maintenant, mon fils, que l'Eternel soit avec toi, afin que tu connaisses le succès et construises la maison de l'Eternel, ton Dieu, conformément à ce qu'il a déclaré à ton sujet!
12. Que l'Eternel veuille seulement t'accorder de la sagesse et de l'intelligence, en te plaçant à la tête d'Israël, afin que tu respectes la loi de l'Eternel, ton Dieu!
13. C'est alors que tu connaîtras le succès, si tu veilles à mettre en pratique les prescriptions et les règles que l'Eternel a données à Moïse pour Israël. Fortifie-toi et prends courage, n'aie pas peur, ne te laisse pas effrayer!
14. Par mes efforts, j'ai préparé pour la maison de l'Eternel 3000 tonnes d'or, 30'000 tonnes d'argent et une quantité de bronze et de fer qu'il n'est pas possible de peser, tant il y en a. J'ai aussi préparé du bois et des pierres, et tu pourras encore en ajouter.
15. Tu disposes d'un grand nombre d'ouvriers, de tailleurs de pierres, de charpentiers et d'hommes habiles pour toutes sortes de travaux.
16. L'or, l'argent, le bronze et le fer sont en quantité incalculable. Lève-toi et agis, et que l'Eternel soit avec toi!»
17. David ordonna à tous les chefs d'Israël d'aider son fils Salomon:
18. «L'Eternel, votre Dieu, n'est-il pas avec vous et ne vous a-t-il pas donné du repos de tous côtés? En effet, il a livré entre mes mains les habitants du pays, et le pays est soumis devant l'Eternel et devant son peuple.
19. Appliquez maintenant votre coeur et votre âme à chercher l'Eternel, votre Dieu. Levez-vous et construisez le sanctuaire de l'Eternel Dieu, afin d'amener l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel et les ustensiles consacrés à Dieu dans la maison qui sera construite pour le nom de l'Eternel.»
