1. Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house.
2. And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD's house.
3. And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
4. Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD.
5. And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep: so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
6. And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of musick of the LORD, which David the king had made to praise the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.
7. Moreover Solomon hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the brasen altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the burnt offerings, and the meat offerings, and the fat.
8. Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great congregation, from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of Egypt.
9. And in the eighth day they made a solemn assembly: for they kept the dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.
10. And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their tents, glad and merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David, and to Solomon, and to Israel his people.
11. Thus Solomon finished the house of the LORD, and the king's house: and all that came into Solomon's heart to make in the house of the LORD, and in his own house, he prosperously effected.
12. And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice.
13. If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;
14. If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
15. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.
16. For now have I chosen and sanctified this house, that my name may be there for ever: and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
17. And as for thee, if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded thee, and shalt observe my statues and my judgments;
18. Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.
19. But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;
20. Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations.
21. And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land, and unto this house?
22. And it shall be answered, Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them.
1. Lorsque Salomon eut fini de prier, le feu descendit du ciel et brûla l'holocauste et les sacrifices, et la gloire de l'Eternel remplit le temple.
2. Les prêtres ne pouvaient entrer dans la maison de l'Eternel, car la gloire de l'Eternel la remplissait.
3. Tous les Israélites virent descendre le feu et la gloire de l'Eternel sur le temple. Ils s'agenouillèrent, le visage contre terre, sur le pavé, ils adorèrent et célébrèrent l'Eternel en disant: «Il est bon, oui, sa bonté dure éternellement!»
4. Le roi et tout le peuple offrirent des sacrifices devant l'Eternel.
5. Le roi Salomon offrit 22'000 boeufs et 120'000 brebis en sacrifice. C'est ainsi que le roi et tout le peuple firent la dédicace de la maison de Dieu.
6. Les prêtres se tenaient à leur poste, ainsi que les Lévites avec les instruments fabriqués en l'honneur de l'Eternel par le roi David pour célébrer l'Eternel en chantant: «Oui, sa bonté dure éternellement!» d'après le cantique que David leur avait transmis. Les prêtres sonnaient de la trompette en face d'eux et tout Israël était là.
7. Salomon consacra le milieu du parvis qui se trouvait devant la maison de l'Eternel; en effet, c'est là qu'il offrit les holocaustes et les graisses des sacrifices de communion, parce que l'autel en bronze qu'il avait fait faire ne pouvait contenir les holocaustes, les offrandes et les graisses.
8. Salomon célébra la fête des tentes à ce moment-là, et tout Israël avec lui, pendant 7 jours. Une grande foule était venue des environs de Hamath jusqu'au torrent d'Egypte.
9. Le lendemain, ils eurent une assemblée solennelle, car ils avaient célébré la dédicace de l'autel pendant 7 jours, puis la fête pendant 7 autres jours.
10. Le vingt-troisième jour du septième mois, Salomon renvoya le peuple chez lui. Ils étaient remplis de joie et avaient le coeur content pour le bien que l'Eternel avait fait à David, à Salomon et à Israël, son peuple.
11. Lorsque Salomon eut terminé la maison de l'Eternel et le palais royal et qu'il eut réussi à accomplir tout ce qu'il avait décidé de faire dans la maison de l'Eternel et dans sa propre maison,
12. l'Eternel lui apparut pendant la nuit et lui dit: «J'exauce ta prière et je choisis cet endroit comme le temple où l'on devra m'offrir des sacrifices.
13. Quand je fermerai le ciel et qu'il n'y aura pas de pluie, quand j'ordonnerai aux sauterelles de dévorer le pays, quand j'enverrai la peste parmi mon peuple,
14. si mon peuple, celui qui porte mon nom, s'humilie, prie et me cherche et s'il renonce à ses mauvaises voies, je l'écouterai du haut du ciel, je lui pardonnerai son péché et je guérirai son pays.
15. Désormais, mes yeux seront ouverts et mes oreilles attentives à la prière faite à cet endroit.
16. Maintenant, je choisis et je consacre cette maison pour que mon nom y réside éternellement, et j'y aurai toujours mes yeux et mon coeur.
17. Quant à toi, si tu marches devant moi comme l'a fait ton père David, en accomplissant tout ce que je t'ai commandé, si tu respectes mes prescriptions et mes règles,
18. j'affermirai ton autorité royale, comme je l'ai promis par alliance à ton père David lorsque j'ai dit: 'Tu ne manqueras jamais d'un successeur qui exerce la domination en Israël.'
19. Si en revanche vous vous détournez de moi, si vous abandonnez les prescriptions et les commandements que je vous ai donnés, mais que vous allez servir d'autres dieux et vous prosterner devant eux,
20. je vous arracherai de mon territoire, que je vous ai donné, je rejetterai loin de moi cette maison, que j'ai consacrée en l'honneur de mon nom, et j'en ferai un sujet de proverbe et de raillerie parmi tous les peuples.
21. Si important qu'ait été ce temple, toute personne qui passera près de lui sera dans l'étonnement et dira: 'Pourquoi l'Eternel a-t-il traité de cette manière ce pays et ce temple?'
22. Et l'on répondra: 'C'est parce qu'ils ont abandonné l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, qui les avait fait sortir d'Egypte, parce qu'ils se sont attachés à d'autres dieux, se sont prosternés devant eux et les ont servis. Voilà pourquoi il a fait venir tous ces malheurs sur eux.'»
