1. And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem.
2. And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.
3. Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.
4. And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through the people from Beer-sheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the LORD God of their fathers.
5. And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city,
6. And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.
7. Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
8. Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.
9. And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
10. And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass.
11. And, behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king's matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and the LORD shall be with the good.
1. Quant à Josaphat, le roi de Juda, il revint en paix chez lui à Jérusalem.
2. Le voyant Jéhu, fils de Hanani, alla à la rencontre du roi Josaphat et lui dit: «Doit-on venir en aide au méchant et aimes-tu ceux qui détestent l'Eternel? A cause de cela, l'Eternel est irrité contre toi.
3. Cependant, il a trouvé de bonnes choses en toi, car tu as fait disparaître du pays les poteaux sacrés et tu as appliqué ton coeur à chercher Dieu.»
4. Josaphat se réinstalla à Jérusalem, puis il se remit à visiter le peuple, depuis Beer-Shéba jusqu'à la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm, et il le fit revenir à l'Eternel, le Dieu de ses ancêtres.
5. Il établit des juges dans le pays, dans chacune des villes fortifiées de Juda,
6. et il dit aux juges: «Faites attention à votre manière d'agir, car ce n'est pas pour les hommes que vous prononcerez des jugements, c'est pour l'Eternel, et il sera près de vous quand vous rendrez votre verdict.
7. Maintenant, que la crainte de l'Eternel soit sur vous. Veillez sur vos actes, car il n'y a chez l'Eternel, notre Dieu, ni injustice, ni favoritisme, ni acceptation de pots-de-vin.»
8. A Jérusalem aussi, Josaphat avait établi des Lévites, des prêtres et des chefs de famille pour Israël, pour l'application du droit de l'Eternel et les contestations. Ils revinrent alors à Jérusalem,
9. et voici les ordres qu'il leur donna: «Vous agirez dans la crainte de l'Eternel, avec fidélité et avec intégrité.
10. Dans toute cause que vous soumettront vos frères établis dans leurs villes, en rapport avec un meurtre, une loi, un commandement, des prescriptions et des règles, vous les éclairerez. Ainsi, ils n'offenseront pas l'Eternel et sa colère n'éclatera pas contre eux et vous. Agissez de cette manière et vous ne commettrez pas d'offense.
11. Vous avez à votre tête le grand-prêtre Amaria pour toutes les affaires de l'Eternel et le chef de la communauté de Juda Zebadia, fils d'Ismaël, pour toutes les affaires du roi. Vous avez aussi à vos côtés des Lévites comme magistrats. Montrez-vous forts et agissez, et que l'Eternel soit avec celui qui fera le bien!»
