1. Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath.
2. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.
3. And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the LORD, saying,
4. Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:
5. And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house,
6. Unto carpenters, and builders, and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house.
7. Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.
8. And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.
9. And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.
10. And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.
11. And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.
12. And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the king's, saying,
13. Go ye, inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.
14. So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with her.
15. And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,
16. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read:
17. Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.
18. But to the king of Judah which sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard;
19. Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
20. Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
1. Josias avait 8 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 31 ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Jedida et c'était la fille d'Adaja, de Botskath.
2. Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel et il marcha entièrement sur la voie de son ancêtre David, il ne s'en écarta ni à droite ni à gauche.
3. La dix-huitième année de son règne, le roi Josias envoya dans la maison de l'Eternel Shaphan, le secrétaire, le fils d'Atsalia et petit-fils de Meshullam.
4. Il lui dit: «Monte vers le grand-prêtre Hilkija. Qu'il ramasse l'argent qui a été apporté dans la maison de l'Eternel et que les gardiens de l'entrée ont récolté auprès du peuple.
5. On confiera cet argent aux responsables chargés des travaux dans la maison de l'Eternel. Ils l'emploieront pour ceux qui travaillent aux réparations de la maison de l'Eternel,
6. pour les charpentiers, les manoeuvres et les maçons, pour l'achat de bois et de pierres de taille nécessaires aux réparations du temple.
7. Mais on ne leur demandera pas de comptes pour l'argent remis entre leurs mains, car ils agissent avec honnêteté.»
8. C'est alors que le grand-prêtre Hilkija dit à Shaphan, le secrétaire: «J'ai trouvé le livre de la loi dans la maison de l'Eternel.» Hilkija donna le livre à Shaphan, et Shaphan le lut.
9. Puis Shaphan, le secrétaire, alla faire son rapport au roi. Il dit: «Tes serviteurs ont ramassé l'argent qui se trouvait dans le temple et l'ont confié aux responsables chargés des travaux dans la maison de l'Eternel.»
10. Puis Shaphan, le secrétaire, annonça au roi: «Le prêtre Hilkija m'a donné un livre.» Et Shaphan le lut devant le roi.
11. A l'écoute des paroles du livre de la loi, le roi déchira ses habits.
12. Ensuite, il donna cet ordre au prêtre Hilkija, à Achikam, fils de Shaphan, à Acbor, fils de Michée, à Shaphan, le secrétaire, et à son propre serviteur Asaja:
13. «Allez consulter l'Eternel pour moi, pour le peuple et pour tout Juda, au sujet des paroles de ce livre qu'on a trouvé. En effet, elle doit être grande, la colère de l'Eternel qui s'est enflammée contre nous, parce que nos ancêtres n'ont pas obéi aux paroles de ce livre et ne se sont pas conformés à tout ce qui nous y est prescrit.»
14. Le prêtre Hilkija, Achikam, Acbor, Shaphan et Asaja allèrent trouver la prophétesse Hulda. Elle était l'épouse de Shallum, le gardien des habits, le fils de Thikva et petit-fils de Harhas, et elle habitait à Jérusalem, dans la ville neuve. Une fois qu'ils lui eurent parlé,
15. elle leur annonça: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Annoncez à l'homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi:
16. 'Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Je vais faire venir des malheurs sur cet endroit et sur ses habitants, conformément à toutes les paroles du livre qu'a lu le roi de Juda.
17. Puisqu'ils m'ont abandonné et qu'ils ont offert des parfums à d'autres dieux afin de m'irriter par toute leur manière d'agir, ma colère s'est enflammée contre cet endroit et elle ne s'éteindra pas.'
18. Mais vous annoncerez au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés pour consulter l'Eternel: 'Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, au sujet des paroles que tu as entendues:
19. Ton coeur a été touché, tu t'es humilié devant l'Eternel en entendant ce que j'ai déclaré contre cet endroit et contre ses habitants, à savoir qu'ils seront un objet d'étonnement et de malédiction, tu as déchiré tes habits et tu as pleuré devant moi. Eh bien, moi aussi, j'ai entendu cela, dit l'Eternel.
20. C'est pourquoi je te ferai rejoindre tes ancêtres, tu rejoindras la tombe dans la paix et tes yeux ne verront pas tous les malheurs que je ferai venir sur cet endroit.'» Ils rapportèrent cette réponse au roi.
