1. Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
2. And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his fatthou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?
3. Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
4. Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
5. And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.
6. So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
7. And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
8. And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
9. Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
10. And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
11. And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
12. Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.
13. So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
14. And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
15. And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
16. And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
17. But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
18. And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
1. Après cela, Nachash, le roi des Ammonites, mourut et son fils devint roi à sa place.
2. David se dit: «Je vais montrer de la bonté envers Hanun, le fils de Nachash, car son père en a montré envers moi.» Et il envoya des messagers le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent dans le pays des Ammonites vers Hanun pour le consoler,
3. les chefs des Ammonites dirent à Hanun: «Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs? N'est-ce pas pour faire une reconnaissance de la ville et la détruire, pour explorer le pays, que ses serviteurs sont venus vers toi?»
4. Alors Hanun arrêta les serviteurs de David, les fit raser et fit couper leurs habits par le milieu jusqu'en haut des cuisses. Puis il les renvoya.
5. On vint informer David de ce qui était arrivé à ces hommes et il envoya des messagers à leur rencontre, car ils étaient couverts de honte. Le roi leur fit dire: «Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé et ne revenez qu'ensuite.»
6. Les Ammonites virent qu'ils avaient provoqué le dégoût de David, et Hanun et les Ammonites envoyèrent 30 tonnes d'argent pour engager des chars et des cavaliers chez les Syriens de Mésopotamie et chez ceux de Maaca et de Tsoba.
7. Ils engagèrent 32'000 chars ainsi que le roi de Maaca avec son peuple, qui vinrent installer leur camp devant Médeba. Les Ammonites sortirent de leurs villes et se rassemblèrent pour marcher au combat.
8. A cette nouvelle, David envoya contre eux Joab et toute l'armée, les hommes vaillants.
9. Les Ammonites sortirent et se rangèrent en ordre de bataille à l'entrée de la ville. Les rois venus en renfort étaient à part dans la campagne.
10. Joab vit qu'il avait à combattre par-devant et par-derrière. Il choisit alors sur toute l'élite d'Israël un groupe qu'il plaça en face des Syriens.
11. Il plaça le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Abishaï, pour qu'il s'oppose aux Ammonites.
12. Il lui dit: «Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours, et si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, je viendrai au tien.
13. Sois fort, montrons du courage pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que l'Eternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon!»
14. Joab s'avança avec sa troupe pour attaquer les Syriens, et ceux-ci prirent la fuite devant lui.
15. Quand les Ammonites virent que les Syriens s'étaient enfuis, ils prirent eux aussi la fuite devant Abishaï, le frère de Joab, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab revint à Jérusalem.
16. Voyant qu'ils avaient été battus par Israël, les Syriens envoyèrent chercher les Syriens qui habitaient de l'autre côté de l'Euphrate. Shophach, le chef de l'armée d'Hadarézer, était à leur tête.
17. On l'annonça à David, qui rassembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, marcha contre eux et se prépara à les attaquer. David se rangea en ordre de bataille contre les Syriens, mais, après avoir combattu contre lui,
18. ils prirent la fuite devant Israël. David tua parmi eux l'équipage de 7000 chars et 40'000 fantassins. Il fit aussi mourir Shophach, le chef de l'armée.
19. Ceux qui étaient soumis à Hadarézer, se voyant battus par Israël, firent la paix avec David et lui furent asservis. Quant aux Syriens, ils ne voulurent plus se porter au secours des Ammonites.
