1. The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying,
2. Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses:
3. That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.
4. And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
5. And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime.
6. And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
7. And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.
8. And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.
9. These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

2. «Parle en ces termes aux Israélites: 'Etablissez-vous, comme je vous l'ai ordonné par l'intermédiaire de Moïse, des villes de refuge:
3. l'auteur d'un homicide, celui qui aura tué quelqu'un involontairement, sans en avoir l'intention, pourra s'y enfuir. Elles vous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang.
4. L'auteur de l'homicide s'enfuira vers l'une de ces villes, s'arrêtera à l'entrée de la ville et exposera son cas aux anciens de cette ville. Ils l'accueilleront chez eux dans la ville et lui donneront un endroit où habiter avec eux.
5. Si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne livreront pas l'auteur de l'homicide entre ses mains, car c'est sans le vouloir qu'il a tué son prochain et sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi.
6. Il restera dans cette ville jusqu'à ce qu'il ait comparu devant l'assemblée pour être jugé et jusqu'à la mort du grand-prêtre alors en fonctions. A ce moment-là seulement, l'auteur de l'homicide pourra repartir et retourner dans sa ville et dans sa maison, dans la ville d'où il s'était enfui.'»
7. Ils consacrèrent Kédesh en Galilée, dans la région montagneuse de Nephthali, Sichem dans la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm et Kirjath-Arba, c'est-à-dire Hébron, dans la région montagneuse de Juda.
8. De l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'est de Jéricho, ils choisirent Betser dans le désert, dans la plaine, dans la tribu de Ruben, Ramoth en Galaad, dans la tribu de Gad, et Golan en Basan, dans la tribu de Manassé.
9. Telles furent les villes désignées pour tous les Israélites et pour l'étranger en séjour parmi eux, afin que celui qui aurait tué quelqu'un involontairement puisse s'y réfugier et ne meure pas de la main du vengeur du sang avant d'avoir comparu devant l'assemblée.
