Bible Red Thread 4: A New Beginning (Genesis 6-9)
Renewed Hope: Once sin is introduced into humanity, evil will spread like wildfire. From the heart of Adam and Eve, sin will successively corrupt relationships between the couple (Genesis 3), and the family (Genesis 4), and finally degrade the relations of the whole society (Genesis 6 to 11), let us not forget nature which will also become hostile. In the dark chapter 5 of Genesis, where death, the consequence of this independence, is present in every line, a man dares to call his son Noah, that is to say, “consolation”, as a nod to the promise of God to break this impasse which is death.
A tragic division: The original plan of the people of God, on the territory of God, under the authority of God, is devastated. From the single original family, two sets of people gradually arise on the surface of the earth, with two opposite ways of life. On the one hand, a majority of people continuously commit bad deeds and also use their capacities to develop their power of nuisance. By their attitude, this part of humanity confirms its rejection of God and its will to serve the cause of the enemy of God: the serpent. On the other hand, a man and his family, the last humans to place their trust in the Creator, become the only interlocutor of God and receives a word from Him: a judgment is in preparation but a rescue plan is in motion.
A Necessary and Sufficient Plan: The story of the flood proves that the promise of judgment as a punishment for choosing independence is real, but that same story confirms that an innovative and unexpected solution to the broken relationship is at work. This project is transmitted to the people of God alone, who must live it and announce it to the rest of creation. This plan will be necessary and sufficient, brought about directly by God. In accordance with the new contract between God and mankind in Genesis 9, the price of one life will henceforth be another life.
REFLECTION: Does the story of an ark used to save mankind from an improbable judgment sound stupid? The vast majority of people who perished in the flood thought so. Would you have been one of the eight people who trusted God’s rescue plan?
